22.01.2022 Do you genomic test your females? While only having 9 Qs makes it easier to do the whole drop, weve been genomic testing all the Dams of sale bulls and ET progeny fir a few years. Weve now got genomic data on pretty much the whole herd. As a small herd (just as you think youre getting somewhere, a damn drought happens) we rely on the genomic info to increase the accuracies on our EBVs by adding our females to the data pool / reference population. As an aside we can fully... parent verify our herd. Moral to the story, dont underestimate the power of your females, theyre the matriarchs of the future, build on it. 21.01.2022 Heifer Show prep was a bit exhausting for some, may as well all take a seat. Great progress today with some not so confident kids in very wet yards. Lucky the generator cord waited till the last one to break. Thank goodness for cordless clippers. Shout out to The Cattle Shop for any show gear, can recommend. Great box of goodies turned up this week. #Herefords

20.01.2022 Spreading manure on the home block today. If only you could smell the photo!! Really need to boost these paddocks after they were so intensively being used to feed cattle the last few years. All cows and stud sire are out on the other two blocks, which now have plenty of feed after being rested. What a completely different year this is, in a good way. Just after I took this pic I was rewarded with a clod of s**t to the face. #nohungryherefords

17.01.2022 A week and 9000L later and it’s not even hot yet. Really dried off if you compare the last lot of pics taken on this album. 70 bales of Oaten hay in the background. Cows still fat. Another small paddock of oats to make hay if it lasts. Everything in the neighborhood looks thirsty. #herefords

17.01.2022 Learnt a valuable lesson today. My job as a breeder is not to diagnose. Ill spare you the details of how that unfolded but lesson effing learned. Needless to say Im bloody devastated at my stupidity. Mrs R Please dont comment. This post will serve as a memory reminder for next calving.

17.01.2022 BLURRED the bad bit as it’s not so pretty but it has happened. M heifer calved about 10 days ago. Didn’t see the calf as she’d hidden it, but she was happy and healthy in the herd last weekend. Checked on them yesterday, to get a look at the calf and she’s prolapsed & we still can’t find the calf. Call the vet for treatment and leave her in a small paddock next to the yards overnight. On way out, find calf in plain sight. A bull calf and full of energy, ie took off like a s...hot when we went to get closer. Go back this morning to see if heifer has made it through the night to find she’s even made it through the gate (lifted it up and went under) to get back to her calf. Took hours this arvo to get both back to the yard, she’s not so flighty now, but the calf is. Put calf in race to try and give it a feed. Ungrateful toad shot through the rails with the big fella holding one leg and yelling get round there, so I do and that’s where the communication got lost, I picked up the front legs hoping the big fella would grab the loose back leg, he let his go thinking he was going to climb over rails to help, I couldn’t hold the toad on my own so he took off. No feed for him. Mother and baby are in a small yard tonight with the vet due back Tuesday for a checkup. Calf 1 Mrs R 0 #herefords See more

Big Fella goes to the Vet to buy lube but it only comes in 5L drums and goes out of date quickly. So this is what they gave him and its on the account as KY jelly!! Imagine the look I gave him. ... 07.01.2022 A reminder to the Big Fella that we’re worth it. Yesterday’s water run found the hay shed burgled by the older girls who are definitely not starving. Posts knocked out with cattle panels all on the ground and them having a mad feed. Words to the effect of sell the effing lot we’re expelled to all and sundry. They’d bolted, it was just me and the dog to listen. To be fair, he’d had a huge day building yards at the lease block in this heat and then decided to top up their ...water tank. 02.01.2022 ...and so it starts again. Thought we’d get ahead on the weekend jobs by carting water to the Bells Lane mob as their two dams looked like drying up soon when we were there Monday. Apparently soon must’ve been as soon as we left by the state of play when we rocked up. Trough carted across the ground and mud all round the tap on the tank. Cows mobbing us for a drink. Trying to get the trough reconnected was fun in the dark. I was supposed to do this job mid week, I would’ve... been crying and cursing trying to get that back together with cows helping. Anyway, we’ll do another load tonight. About 3000 litres a trip. Wonder if the trough will still be connected when we get back??? #whereslanina #thirstyherefords See more

02.01.2022 50 bales of soften hay off 12 acres, carted in this week. Cattle weren’t happy we took over their shed space and fenced them out. (I’ve been corrected on the acres 12 not 20!!)
