20.01.2022 Hands-free car kit for your mobile phone - if it saves you even once it will have paid for itself!......... Please note there are new mobile phone laws coming into effect on 1st February. If you use your phone, and the car is not completely parked, you are guilty of the offence. If you don’t already have a completely hands-free system in your car, you should think about getting one installed. The fine is $1,000 plus 4 demerit points. So if it saves you even once, it will have paid for itself!

17.01.2022 If someone in your family has a gambling addiction, it is important to appreciate that you may have propensity to addiction yourself. With the abundance of pokies and betting apps being so accessible to today’s Australians, it comes as no surprise that gambling addiction rates are on the rise. But did you know that pathological gambling addiction runs in families? A recent study by the University of Iowa revealed that first degree relatives of pathological gamblers are eigh...t times more likely to develop gambling addictions. This can then lead to criminal behaviour with 10 25% of Australian problem gamblers committing crimes to feed their addiction. This may explain why the 'extra-ordinary' aspect of so many of my clients is how 'ordinary' they are. Housewives, professionals and hard workers from all walks of life, many of them first time offenders. So if you suspect you have a gambling problem, it is far better to seek the help of a counsellor, rather than the help of a lawyer. https://www.gamblinghelponline.org.au/

17.01.2022 STUDENT MOOT COMP Recently Matthew was involved with the annual Gold Coast/Beenleigh/Logan district schools Year 11 legal studies mooting competition at the Southport Magistrates Court. Matthew has been the volunteer Judge each year since 2003 for this competition. A moot is a 'mock trial' where students are given a real criminal case to argue in an actual court environment. This year, eight schools were given a mock case about some teenagers being caught graffitiing at a train station. The graffiti artists and witnesses were cross examined with one school being the prosecution and the opposing school representing the defence. This year, Kings College was the winner. Congratulations to the impressive group of students. Matthew looks forward to judging and meeting with students next year for the 2020 Legal Mooting Competition.

03.01.2022 Queensland Driver Licences: DEMERIT POINTS & WORK LICENCES An Open licence affords a driver 12 demerit points within a 3 year period.... If you incur 12 or more demerit points, you will be sent an 'Accumulation of demerit points notice to choose'. You can either choose to accept a three month suspension or a 2 point 12 month Good Behaviour Bond. It is essential that you respond to this letter, otherwise Queensland Transport will initiate the three month suspension without further reference to you. If you are intercepted by the police during that time you will be charged with driving whilst suspended. If you choose the 2 point 12 month Good Behaviour Bond, and lose those 2 points, you can apply for a work licence. This is when you need to call Reeves Lawyers.

01.01.2022 Reeves Lawyers wishes everyone all the very best for 2021.
