10.01.2022 What are your top #zerowaste essentials? Want to be part of #plasticfreejuly but not sure where to start? Heres what we consider to be the top 3 most practical and helpful items to live a life of less waste: 1. Reusable coffee cup - this comes in handy not just for taking away coffee! It can be used for taking away restaurant leftovers, use it to refill at your bulk food store, for cold drinks, ice cream, to store nuts and seeds on the go and whatever else you can think of! ...If you dont have one already, a food jar makes a great alternative and does the same job. 2. Cutlery set - you dont have to rush out and buy one of these btw (although it is tempting) simply grab a fork, knife and spoon from your cutlery draw at home and wrap it in a tea towel. 3. Bamboo toothbrush - so these are not a zero waste item but they do go a long way to reducing the amount of plastic being used. Once theyve done their time as your toothbrush they make a great scrubber for shower grout, thus giving them a longer usable life. They are made from a renewable source and can be composted (sans bristles) once theyve really had it. 05.01.2022 According to the ABC’s War on Waste, Australians are currently disposing of 6,000 kilos of fashion and textile waste every 10 minutes! Buying well, and taking good care of what we already have is a huge step toward lightening this waste load so we thought we'd share a few tips for getting the longest life possible from your wardrobe! If you have any awesome laundry hacks, please share, we'd love to hear them 1. Use a garment bag for br...as to protect other garments from snagging on hooks. 2. Air dry clothes in the shade. Never in direct sun as they may fade and shrink. If you must dry in the sun, be sure to turn any denim and linen inside out to prevent fading. 3. Use a gentle detergent or powder and not too much. We have been conditioned to think that the clothes are clean if they smell clean. This is simply not true. Less is more. 4. Choose the lowest spin cycle and if you have the space, drape the clothes over the line without using pegs. 5. Separate your loads. Darks with darks and lights with lights to avoid colour runs. Lastly when buying new, consider investing in well-constructed, durable fabrics that last. It can be really helpful to do some research, find out where your clothes are coming from, who made them, what they are made of and read the care instructions so you have the best chance of making a good purchasing choice, caring for each garment, and getting the longest life possible from each piece. 01.01.2022 PARABENS & SULPHATES: If you’ve ever wondered what they are, what the difference is, how to identify them, and why we should avoid them, READ ON. A paraben is a synthetic chemical derived from petrochemicals & used in most household products and cosmetics. Commonly used to preserve a product and extend its shelf life, it can also be used to add fragrance. Whilst they are effective in preserving products, Parabens are easily absorbed in...to the skin & have been shown to interfere with hormone function among other side affects. Some common parabens include; Methylparaben, Butylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben & Ethylparaben. Commonly used as a foaming agent, sulphates give us the suds in toothpaste, shampoo, laundry and dishwashing detergent among other products. The reason we see sulphates so often is because they are cheap and effective, however what they provide in power they make up for in negative effects to our health and our environment. They have been shown to cause algae blooms in freshwaters, releasing toxins and reducing oxygen availability for marine life. Generally speaking, a product which contains sulphates is not Greywater safe.
