17.01.2022 TEAM Q+A Kym | What was your first teacher training like in India? The Yoga teacher training in India was a 3 year residential course in an ashram, 2 hours from Mumbai. A beautiful location, quiet and surrounded by hills and fields. The course could not be broken, so if you chose to go home, you could, but it meant you then had to start the course from scratch. Sounds harsh but it was a great way to keep you there and ensure no worldly distractions interfered with lear...ning. We rose at 4am for meditation and contemplation, then yoga, followed by a walk/jog. After a shower and breakfast there was a morning lecture, then karma yoga (work to assist the running of the ashram). Lunch then rest, more self-study with a cuppa, then evening lecture and then bhajans (spiritual singing) followed by dinner and then you were truly ready for bed! It was both the most amazing time of my life as well as the most difficult. It definitely changed who I was and continues to shape the choices I make today. I can't really separate the knowledge of yoga from Kym, and would do it all again. It is what I am most grateful for in life for without this knowledge I know life would be much harder! 07.01.2022 Team Q+A Alex | What drew you to meditation and reading cards? At the age of 22 I was diagnosed with a serious autoimmune illness ( Lupus- SLE) and that was my turning point. The shock of this turned my life upside down especially because throughout my childhood and teenage years I was never sick and at 25 I nearly died because of it. So my journey began to look for answers, the detective in me wanted to know the cause of this illness. Western medicine told me there ...is no cure and I have to be on medication for the rest of my life, well...that did not gel with me very well and I began to look for answers. I read many books on nutrition and natural therapies, books on spirituality and meditation, did some courses like counselling and nutrition ( we had no internet back then ). I heard about Vipassana meditation where you meditate for ten days and you are not allowed to talk to anyone except for the teacher. I decided that this would be a great way to start. Well...that was a very difficult and profound experience, I cried for ten days. It was very cathartic and healing, at this point I knew that meditation is a way for me to connect with my body on all levels and to remember my true essence. I stepped on a path of spiritual development that introduced me to Astrology, Numerology, tarot and Oracle cards, hypnotherapy and regression into past lives. So in regards to reading cards, for me they are a language to communicate with Spirit world and Creator. They can guide us and help us with evolutionary development on the soul and physical level. 06.01.2022 Team Q+A Maddie | What was it about yoga that drew you to do your teacher training? I really wanted to learn more about yoga and work on nurturing and healing myself. Having suffered severe depression and anxiety from my teenage years, to the point where things just weren’t getting any better, I found myself joining one of mums yoga classes, her kind of ‘fun’ was not my kind of fun . ... This class really had some kind of shift and change.. I was curious and decided to go back for more and found more of a shift, a peace and sense of calm... but then sometimes as life does, you stop and loose track of yourself. I always came back to yoga after that.. it always shifted and helped me when I needed it most or fell off the rails and lost my way. When Mum opened Reflection Wellness I became more consistent within my practice, this really did change my life and I decided to explore more. In 2019 I completed my 200 hour teacher training and I felt a deeper connection to myself and learnt a lot, I am currently looking at furthering my studies as I’m ready to learn more. I have a few videos in our online library and will be continuing to add to these. 06.01.2022 Team Q+A Chitra | How did you first get into yoga? I started Yoga in my late teens as a last hope to help me heal chronic health issues that seemed to elude western medicine. I was such a cynic - I remember thinking that there were probably lots of cults and crazy people in the Yoga world so I selected the Yoga school that had the largest ad in the Yellow Pages (remember those!) somehow erroneously equating advertising budget with reputability! Anyway, it was a good ...call - my health improved and more importantly my heart opened and I found my life path. The changes I experienced were so profound that I wanted to share Yoga with others and for a while I was that annoying evangelist person full of opinions on how everyone around me should dive into Yoga - maybe I still am?! Within a couple of years I had trained as a Yoga teacher and here I am thirty years later, still teaching, still learning and still loving this amazing practice that is transforming my life. 05.01.2022 Team Q+A Saffron | When did you first fall in love with yoga and how has it changed your life and how do you manage to balance your Beauty Therapy with Yoga? I fell in love with yoga after the very first class I did when I was 18. The teacher was in her 60's and had many years of experience. Her 90min class was not only asanas but she also included pranayama, chanting and positive affirmations. I felt amazing afterwards and that is when my yoga journey began! It has ...changed my life in the way that it has showed me that life is spiritual, not just physical. After my first yoga class I then began reading about meditation and other religions/spiritual paths. I feel with my experience as a massage therapist that my knowledge of the body has helped me understand the asanas better and also has helped me when working with clients with injuries. I no longer massage but I still do facial treatments as I feel it's an important part of self care for people to be touched and nurtured. I am lucky that I run my own beauty clinic so I can easily work my facial clients around my yoga teaching. I enjoy having this variety and I think they compliment each other really well. 01.01.2022 Team Q+A Andrew | When did you first fall in love with music? How old were you when you knew you wanted to play the flute? I recall my father occasionally putting on a recording of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony when I was a child, and I remember immediately being drawn to the sound world. The amazing chorus, not to mention those opening chords to the last movement that sounded both terrifying and thrilling at the same time! I think the seeds for my music career were probab...ly planted then. So, why the flute?! I remember seeing the Irish flute virtuoso Sir James Galway playing the flute on the TV, and I began the nag my mum until she bought me a flute. I remember the first time I ever played in an ensemble with others; it was my primary school concert band, and it must have sounded horrendous, but I thought it was the most beautiful thing I’d ever heard. We were living in Rockhampton in central Queensland at the time, and there was a decent music scene which gave me opportunities to play and develop. I remember competing on stage in the Rocky Eisteddfod, playing Chaminade’s Concertino pretending I was Sir James Galway! I eventually went to university in Brisbane, finished a Bachelor and then a master’s degree, then decided to do more study in the UK. I studied for another year in the UK with a master teacher and popped into the odd class at the Royal Academy of Music (there was actually a PUB in the basement of the Royal Academy when I was there! I swear I behaved myself! ;)) When I came back from London, I eventually won the Principal Piccolo position with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and this led to me living in the Macedon Ranges! My career has taken me all over the world, and I’m incredibly lucky. Playing with the MSO at Carnegie Hall in New York just last year is one highlight; then there’s the unexpected things, for example I once had an audience with Crown Princess Mary of Denmark after the MSO played a concert in Copenhagen a few years ago! I’ve really enjoyed being able to share music with the yoga community in sound healing workshops, and I look forward to playing for you at the next one (may it be soon!) See more
