24.01.2022 And were back for 2019, while we are looking forward to the year ahead, we have also been taking some time to reflect on the year that was 2018. Weve gone from being open 2 days to now 5 days and the wonderful Arishna Chandra joined Refresh. We continued to follow our passion of focusing on ways to make sense of & rebuild life after trauma as well as many other struggles. Weve also met some captivating people in the world of helicopter emergency medical services and we a...re pleased to be working with a wellbeing focus in this arena. We are looking forward to many more precious and challenging moments in 2019. We continue to notice just how honoured we feel to be working with so many strong & resilient people, to share trust and to bear witness to the ups and downs of life and the wonders of our humanity. May 2019 be a year of connectedness, of feeling heard, of being valued for who you are, and a year of growth.... with a good dose of laughter thrown in there too. While the true highlights of 2018 cant be captured in a photo or shared publicly, here are a few pics of the things we got up to outside of the office. #Psychology #PTSD #traumarecovery #peersupport #veterans #ig2018

24.01.2022 Some of the most severe injuries cannot be seen with the naked eye. Post-traumatic stress affects people from all walks of life, whether youre in the serving m...ilitary, a veteran or a first responder, its never too late to seek help and support from a professional help or from within the community. We are travelling across Australia to raise awareness for post-traumatic stress. Please consider sharing our post to help us spread our message. If you or a loved one feel that you may be suffering from post-traumatic stress, please seek help. You are not alone and you are not less of a person for taking the first steps towards looking after yourself.

24.01.2022 I hope everyone has taken the chance to check-in with a mate, co-worker or loved one today for R U OK? Day. What I really hope is that we get well practiced at doing this often, so that our relationships feel more connected and supportive, even if its sharing the good stuff as well as the struggles! Having a connected network of supports around us is the key to wellbeing. We dont have to know the answers or offer any solutions, its just about being there and listening, no matter whats going on. Give it a go!

23.01.2022 Just a reminder, you can speak to a counsellor at any time during the Australia Day Holiday period. Although our offices are closed on Monday the 28th of January 2019, you can call us for support on 1800 011 046.

23.01.2022 The great people at Headspace have shared some handy tips to support young people watching 13 Reasons Why. So many really important conversation starters & tricks to manage your mood if things are feeling a bit heavy after watching episodes, for both young & old.

22.01.2022 This Remembrance Day, a former soldier is urging Australians to remember those who have completed their service, but who still need help.

21.01.2022 Thank You to all who work so hard to take care of our communities.

21.01.2022 Drink to escape the anxiety but then feel it the next day? It all makes sense. Sometimes it feels like alcohol is the answer or at least in that moment it will help numb things out, help feel calm, but it can be a double-edged sword. It can be helpful just to understand whats going on in your brain so we can make sense of it as its happening.

21.01.2022 Peer roles are a great opportunity share your knowledge and engage in a sense of purpose while supporting mates. I had the pleasure of working with some of the Peer Advisors while at Invictus Games last year and I cant speak highly enough of the work they do & the program.

20.01.2022 Its always a good day to catch up with mates. Todays about going beyond the usual chit chat catch up and checking in with friends. How are you really? Whats going on? You dont have to know what to say in reply, you dont have to fix it. Just let your mate talk. #MayEight #mate #mentalhealth

20.01.2022 Sometimes, after trying everything, stepping away from something we love is the healthiest option, whether it be a job, a relationship, a coping mechanism or anything in between. As painful as it might be, finding choice can also be empowering.

18.01.2022 The children’s books ‘Do You Still Love Me? Because I Really Love You!’ and ‘Still My Hero’ help kids understand the impact Post-Traumatic Stress can have on a ...parent. The stories are of hope and healing, and are available to our clients from Open Arms offices and counselling rooms around the country. #StrongerTogether #OpenArmsSupport

17.01.2022 Loved reading this. Hope to see many families creating their tradition of attending a dawn service in the morning.

16.01.2022 Todays email from www.mindful.org really caught my attention. Practical steps on managing our own anger outbursts... yes we all have them! Give a go, you might be pleasantly surprised at what happens

15.01.2022 A powerful and accurate representation. Worth a read. While I now have the privilege of working with people over a much longer period of time, Ill never forget so many experiences, learnings and wonderful people I got to spend time with in the inpatient setting. Every step along the treatment pathway is so valuable.

13.01.2022 Today is a day we stop to reflect & remember. Remembering the brave, the fallen and all the many who have served our country as well as their families. Thank you is not enough.

13.01.2022 Weve all felt lonely at some point in time and sometimes that feeling sticks around and is really hard to shift. This is an interesting article about loneliness, how common it is, and some tips to help shift out of that rut loneliness can create. When it really hangs around and you just cant seem to shake it, it can be helpful to talk to someone. At Refresh we are all about the importance of meaningful connection and building good quality relationships in your life.

13.01.2022 Service dogs can have such a positive impact on wellbeing. Its so great to see this idea being embraced in such a public setting. Im tempted to book a flight

12.01.2022 The Police Remembrance Bike Riders rolled out this morning. Its not too late to donate to support our wonderful Police Officers and their families. NSW Police Legacy continues to adapt their support to the needs of both past & present police officers & their families.

12.01.2022 An interesting and honest discussion of the foundation for couples therapy - a willingness, by both, to look inwards to improve the relationship. https://drkellyflanagan.com//why-couples-shouldnt-do-coup/

11.01.2022 A calmer and quieter time to do the groceries. If youre finding the supermarket a bit too overwhelming this might be a great option to look for at your local store. At times, PTSD can capture too much sensory input, making it difficult to concentrate and make decisions. Trying to manage these symptoms while still getting out of the house can be a real challenge. Figuring out what works for you is the key.

11.01.2022 #YouCanTalk about suicide. In fact, talking about thoughts of suicide, as well as feelings of helplessness and hopelessness is the best thing we can do. Ask, listen, talk.

10.01.2022 Today on ANZAC Day we acknowledge and remember the sacrifices of those that serve our country and their families. Past & present, the living & the fallen. You all give an incredible gift to the community, thank you.

10.01.2022 Wondering why "VVCS" has changed to now being "Open Arms"? Here is an explanation of the meaning behind the new name

09.01.2022 Its Christmas, everyone is busy, everyones excited, or are they? Christmas can be "the most wonderful time" or one of the most challenging times of the year. We can feel lost or lonely when we are on our own or even when we are surrounded by people. Here are some simple tips to try to take the edge of that feeling. Give them a go, see if any work for you?

08.01.2022 Sometimes its hard to know what to say when youre trying to be supportive, when you so desperately want to take that pain & suffering away to make it all better. Often there are no words. Just sitting with it, together, can mean more than any word ever will.

06.01.2022 An interesting insight into life as a paramedic or emergency service worker. How common, natural and innocent curiosity might be experienced and what we can ask instead. *trigger warning*: descriptions contained within the article. (N.B. References to PTSD are not the professional views of Refresh Psychology. We believe that having an emotional response to these jobs is normal and healthy and not necessarily reflective of a diagnosis)

06.01.2022 Vulnerability. The thing that we avoid at all costs? Is it also the key to happiness? This is my all time favourite talk. Bren Brown manages to say it all, with just enough humour and self-deprecation to make it interesting.

05.01.2022 Ive been lucky to have spent the past week assisting in the development of Peer Supporters for Rescue Helicopter teams. Its been an incredible experience and so wonderful to see wellbeing in the emergency services environment moving in this progressive direction. This clip really highlights the foundation of how we support those around us, no matter how big or small the issue. Acknowledging the feeling, sitting with our own discomfort to be with someone else in their discomfort. This creates a feeling of connectedness and understanding when we need it most.

05.01.2022 Would love to see more of this around Sydney, what a great idea! Chatting about life doesnt have to be a big deal and its far from weakness. Opening up takes courage.

04.01.2022 Transitioning from ADF can be a time full of unknowns. These programs can be a great way to start to prepare for the changes ahead.

01.01.2022 Today we remember those that sacrificed their freedom for ours, from all conflicts and all walks of life, as well as their families. Those who have been lost and those who have been injured, both physically and mentally, as well as those who continue to serve and the families that wait for their return. Whilst we dont have the luxury to thank those who are no longer with us in person, we can thank the many that walk among us. We are so grateful to have the pleasure of working with so many wonderful veterans, serving members and families of these communities. Thank you #lestweforget #ANZACday2019
