22.01.2022 #storiesofwelcomecentre A Day to Remember... "What a delight and joy it was to be part of the St Columba's Primary School staff group who visited the Centre a couple of weeks ago as part of their staff development. They came along to meet and make friendships with new members of our Inner West Community. With great food (a wonderful morning tea supplied by the School, and Syrian and Persian food prepared by the volunteers for lunch). music, dancing and lots of fun - it was e...asy to join in together and meet new people. One highlight was the craft activity - decorating friendship stones with messages of goodwill. At the end of the day we exchanged our stones. I will always treasure my stone... in both English and Farsi it says "Peace". The day can be summed up by one little boy who implored us, Please dont put away the party." 19.01.2022 We are really thankful of RACS - Refugee Advice and Casework Service and Sarah Dale, the principal solicitor, for coming to the Welcome Centre yesterday! Sarah provided legal advice to our participants- those who were previously detained on Nauru- in regard to US settlement offer. They have been given only ten days to make their decision. After the session, the group got a clearer idea and better understanding of the process, current policies and their options. It relieved their frustration and eased their mind. What a quick and positive response from our friends at RACS! #communityrefugeewelcomecentre

17.01.2022 #storiesofwelcomecentre Feng Shui at the Welcome centre Leaning against mountains and Facing water is considered by Feng shui masters to be auspicious and can bring good luck. I am not a follower of Feng Shui, but I was reminded of this principle a few weeks ago at the Refugee Welcome Centre in Callan Park. One of the regular creative people who attend the centre has a name that sounds like magic, which is how I remember his name. And he creates magical things. He is an e...ngineering wizard. With his broad smile he is always eager to share stories and show photos of his latest creations. He most certainly thinks outside the box. A few weeks ago, he was sharing with me his regret at not having access to the necessary machinery to complete his current masterpiece project. I asked him if he knew about Mens Sheds, they are magical places where men gather to create, mend things and support other community groups. My husband belongs to one, so I suggested that my new friend should check it out the next time they are open. He wondered if they would have the have the right equipment. Oh, they are bound to' I replied,' Im sure 2 widows a week turn up asking for help in emptying their garages! I suggested that he pay them a visit and ask for my husband who would show him around & explain membership. The next Saturday my husband came home from the shed and told me how thrilled was this potential new member upon visiting the Mens shed. Later I heard from a member of the Centre that my wizard friend had mentioned our conversation saying whenever I come here something magical happens, this place is magic That was when I recalled the Feng Shui principle about Mountain and Water. There isnt exactly a mountain behind the Centre, but walking home on a hot summers day, its a pretty steep hill. And the waters of the harbour in Iron Cove hold a special attraction for runners, cyclists, walkers, and our Friday members who love to walk beside the water, take in the view, the trees. They absorb the sense of the place with joy & pleasure. We are all happier people for being at the Welcome Centre! Elizabeth Mulrennan 2019 #communityrefugeewelcomecentre See more

Mondays 11am to 2 pm at CRWC starting next week (24th Feb). Bring along your favourite recipe that has a connection to your life, or your culture. You will be asked to share a short story about the recipe (e.g your name, a little bit about yourself, how the recipe relates to your life, who taught you the recipe, when you make it what does it make ...you think of, who do you make the food for, any stories you have about the food, whats special about it and any special methods or ingredients). You will also be asked to provide a list of ingredients needed and also asked to show the group how to make the plate of food you have chosen. At the first session we will look at all the recipes and decide what week they will be made. Please choose a recipe that you feel comfortable cooking and that is easy!
