14.01.2022 Living with a Holy God // Numbers 5// Missed out? Rewatch the service: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJKXJz6Z7mc The one and true Holy God is dwelling among His people. But that means that the Israelites must be pure and undefiled. ... That standard is a high standard. In verse 6, we see that sinning against one another is equivalent to being unfaithful to God. Every single human being is created in God's image and is loved by his/her Creator. Therefore, when the Israelites do wrong against each other, they are also sinning against the LORD. Numbers 5:11-31 is perhaps one of the passages in the Bible that is labelled as discriminatory or sexist as it outlines the test of an unfaithful wife. If a husband feels jealous or suspects his wife of marital unfaithfulness, he is to bring her before the priest and God, where the test is one of drinking bitter water. At first glance, this may seem very unfair. However, first we must see what other neighbouring countries did at that time. In Egypt, Assyria and Babylon, husbands had the power to inflict any punishment they wanted on the unfaithful wife. But, this resulted in many innocent women being falsely accused and killed due to their husband's jealousy. Women were powerless and defenceless. This is in contrast to God's commands. Instead of being judged by her husband who is limited in knowledge, the wife stands before the all-knowing, faithful and true God who judges fairly. The wife who had committed adultery would be cursed, but the one who was innocent would be validated by God Himself! God would be their defender and protector. Instead of gender discrimination, God's commands here protect the faithful wife from harm. Now, turn to lens back to ourselves. We have definitely been unfaithful to God. He clearly knows every lustful thought, every evil act, every selfish desire that we have had. We are not innocent. But on the cross, Jesus took the curse and the bitter cup that we deserve. By Christ's death, we are presented holy and blameless in the sight of the Holy God (Colossians 1:21) and our hope and life is secure in Him.

12.01.2022 First Covid Era Baptism // Last Sunday (1/11/20), we had our first ever covid-baptism! We praise God that we could come together to celebrate the baptism of our sister 'R'. She was baptised by Associate Pastor Paul McIntosh and his wife Sharon. Sister 'R' put her faith and trust in the Lord Jesus a few months back and was eager to obey the Lord's command and be baptised. We are really glad to share this good news with everyone and thank God that the baptism went smoothly :)

10.01.2022 Bridging the gap between God's heart and our heart // Acts 11:1-18 // Missed out? Rewatch the service: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOi5ix-t02A Firstly, from last week's sermon, we see that God gave salvation not only to the Jews, but to the Gentiles (non-Jews) as well. God's heart is broad and He has compassion on all He has made (Psalm 145:9). ... To Christians, you are only saved because of God's pity, love and mercy, and not because of anything within yourself. To non-Christians, you are included in God's heart <3 He loves you very, very much and wants you to be in heaven with Him forever! But we see that the heart of man is narrow. Upon hearing that the Gentiles had received the Holy Spirit and salvation, the first thing they were concerned about was about the fact that Peter had broken the law. It seems as if the salvation of the Gentiles was of no concern to them at all. What about us? We too have narrow hearts. The further a person is away from your close circle, the less we care about them. Well, but we aren't God and we don't have unlimited resources right? We could possibly hide behind this excuse if Jesus never stepped foot on earth. The gap between God's heart and our heart is wide, but God has made ways to bridge them. Firstly, God's Spirit leads us to do things that are in accordance with God's heart. Peter wasn't a great strategist or missionary, but He listened and followed the Spirit's leading. We need to follow His example, and pray, and be sensitive to the Spirit's leading, especially in mission. Secondly, God's grace in sending Jesus should change our hearts. God's grace shows us that we are dearly loved by Him. We deserved to perish, but God's Son was condemned to death in our place so we would receive eternal life. God's grace enables us to be adopted into His kingdom, because Jesus was forsaken on the cross. The proper understanding of God's grace frees us to love those around us instead of wondering how to better serve our own interests. If you feel that your heart is too small, perhaps it is time to seriously meditate on God's grace and let your heart be transformed by that. It will free you to do God's work. His burden is easy and His yoke is light (Matthew 11:28-30)

09.01.2022 The Blessing // Numbers 6:22-27 // Missed out? Rewatch the service: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWodzjN7utQ What does blessing mean to you? Well, when God pronounces a blessing, it is a decree and it will surely happen. But when men pronounces a blessing, it is a prayer to the Most High God. ... In the Aaronic blessing, the priest essentially prays for 4 things: Protection, Grace, Favour and Peace. During this covid pandemic, most of us would have prayed for God's protection upon us and our loved ones from this virus. But besides these things, what is the blessing you truly seek? What do you daydream about? Is it a romantic relationship? Is it career success? Is it wealth and good health? These are good things, however when they become the ultimate things in our lives, they become our idols. In the Aaronic blessing, the name of God - "The LORD" is repeated 3 times. It is the LORD who blesses. In v 27, we see that God has placed His name on the Israelites, just like a child would put a nametag on a water bottle. The Israelites belonged to God alone. What about us? What does the Aaronic blessing mean for us? Firstly, Jesus prays for God to protect His disciples from the evil one. Jesus focused on spiritual protection instead of physical. Often, we want to seek favour and approval from others and obtain their love. But in Jesus, we have one who loved us so much that He came down to be a lowly man and to die for us. Jesus lived a sinless and perfect life. But instead of obtaining the Aaronic blessing, He took the curse on our behalf. The LORD allowed Him to suffer on the cross instead of protecting Him. He was forsaken by His Father. When He cried out: "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?", there was no answer. The Prince of Peace experienced suffering so we can have true peace with God. We receive God's blessing of salvation and peace only because Jesus took God's curse that we deserved for all the evil things we have said, thought or done. Let us now, go forth and be free to bless others practically, in word and in action, to show them that we have a God who desires to bless and has already sent His Son to be a hope and light for this dark world.

07.01.2022 Levites, Servant of a Holy God // Numbers 3-4 // Missed out? Rewatch the service: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBmOyNDNfuM At the start of Numbers 3, we are met with a spine-chilling statement: Nadab and Abihu, fell dead before the LORD because they offered unauthorised fire. Why was God so harsh? ... That's because God is holy. This story shows us that it is dangerous for sinful men like us to approach a Holy God. We cannot just approach Him however we want. The Levites were heavily involved in ensuring that God's people approached Him the right way. The Levites were responsible to take care or keep watch over the Tabernacle, where God's presence dwelt among the Israelites. Any other Israelites who approached the sanctuary was to be put to death. However, the Levites were on guard duty to prevent any Israelite from sinning against the Holy God by approaching Him in an unacceptable manner. The Levites' message was clear: Keep out of the Tabernacle lest you die! What does it have to do with us today? The ultimate problem we face is that we are sinful, and we cannot approach a Holy God. How then do we even have hope that we can be in heaven with Him one day? Today we have a greater Levite: The Lord Jesus Christ. He was the only One who kept all of God's laws and obeyed God's will perfectly, including going to the cross and dying on our behalf. All our sins have been washed by His blood, and we are now acceptable to a holy God. Jesus message is loud and clear too: Come into God's family and presence! For I have paid the price, and I have died for you.
