25.01.2022 International Overdose Awareness Day is 31 August. All over the world, events will be held to raise awareness of overdose, acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends and reduce the stigma of deaths or permanent injuries resulting from overdose. It is also a day to spread the message that overdose death is preventable. We are running a Free Community Overdose Awareness Training event on Monday 2nd September as part of our International Overdose Awareness Day activities. Come along and learn how to recognise and respond to the signs and symptoms of a drug overdose and learn how to administer life saving Naloxone. All community members are welcome to attend. Register via Eventbrite

24.01.2022 A big thank you to all who attended our online event today to mark International Overdose Awareness Day. While we couldnt be together in person, the occasion was no less important. As Ginny, the Coordinator of our Harm Reduction and Overdose Prevention Program reflected: "Many people at this event have experienced the pain of overdose - whether as a friend, family member, a person who works in the Alcohol & Other Drug sector or the broader community sector, or as a person w...ho uses drugs. Today is a painful ritual for many, but also an important one for we are determined not to let them be forgotten. We are determined others should not suffer the heavy weight of grief and loss we carry. We are determined to challenge the stigma associated with drug use, the stigma that makes some of us falter when asked how our loved ones died. We are determined to change how people who use drugs are treated in our society". A special thanks to all our speakers including our CEO, Bronwyn Pike for making time in her very busy schedule. To the members of our Harm Reduction and Overdose Prevention team (some of whom are captured in the below picture) and to our special guest speaker who shared their own story with us. #IOAD2020 #EndOverdose #OverdoseAware

23.01.2022 Tomorrow is the annual Walk Against Family Violence (WAFV) organised by Safe Steps. The Walk Against Family Violence is an annual event and has been taking place in Victoria for more than a decade. Join Safe Steps, Respect Victoria and other organisations across Victoria, including us. ... This year we are being asked to: Wear something orange and walk around the block (or longer if desired). The Uniting ReGen team will be walking (from our respective homes) around 11.30. Why not ask a neighbourhood friend and join us for this event

22.01.2022 Welcome news for Victorian #DrugPolicy, harm reduction and treatment. The Independent review panel finds the North Richmond Community Health Medically Supervised Injecting Room is saving lives and changing lives and recommends extension of the pilot for a further 3 years and the establishment of a second service in Melbourne. The review found at least 21 lives saved from overdose and a further 2,657 overdoses safely managed. The service has provided over 10,000 health and social support interventions like housing, family violence, dental and drug treatment as well as reducing ambulance call outs.

22.01.2022 Our friends and colleagues at CoHealth are coordinating alcohol and other drug treatment and support for the residents of the towers during this hard lockdown. Harm Reduction Victoria is also on the ground. Thank you to all the services supporting people through this time.

22.01.2022 The @ndarcunsw #ADAPTStudy is exploring the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) on Australians who use drugs. Share your experiences in the confidential online survey and help ensure drug-related issues are understood and represented. Learn more about the study and take part via the ADAPT website https://www.adaptstudy.org.au/

21.01.2022 The Morrison government is proposing, once again, to drug test Centrelink recipients despite strong opposition from health, welfare and Alcohol & Other Drug (AOD) experts. The evidence tells us this approach is expensive and ineffective in preventing future use and reducing drug-related harm. There is also a lack of evidence for forcing people into treatment. We know these proposals will only serve to further marginalise and stigmatise people who use drugs. If our government... is serious about addressing drug related harms within our communities, it needs to be guided by the evidence to invest in expanded harm reduction measures, increased capacity within the AOD treatment sector and funding for programs like our pilot Pathways Program which support people to reconnect with the community including through participation in training, education and employment. Thank you to Dr Nicole Lee for an excellent piece in The Conversation this week #welfaredrugtesting #AOD #drugpolicy #evidencebasedpolicy

It was an opportunity for ReGen staff learn more about the history of the Clothesline project, to hear from some of our consumers about the importance of addressing family violence within Alcoh...ol & Other Drug (AOD) treatment settings and providing safe spaces for women accessing AOD treatment and support. 13.01.2022 Always Was, Always Will Be This year's NAIDOC Week theme recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this land for over 65,000 years. This is a time to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. ... We all have a responsibility to educate ourselves and others on the history of this country - a history that dates back thousands of generations, and is the oldest living culture in the world. What a privilege it is to have this opportunity. While NAIDOC Week celebrations look at little different this year, there's still plenty of ways you can get involved - bit.ly/2FO8UMJ #NAIDOCWeek2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe

12.01.2022 "It's an opportunity to celebrate our culture - who we are and where we've come from. We have been here for a long time, and we will continue to be here for a long time. But it's an opportunity to celebrate not only who we are and our culture, but our history and where we are and where we have come from" - Uncle Dan In celebration of NAIDOC week, our staff from across Uniting AOD and Mental Health Services came together to hear from five incredible Aboriginal leaders on what... NAIDOC means to them. We are humbled and incredibly grateful to each of our speakers - Senator Lidia Thorpe, Uncle Ian, Uncle Dan, Uncle Eddie and Coree - for their time, energy and passion in talking with us about what "Always Was, Always Will Be" means to them as individuals and to community. It was an honour to sit, listen and learn what we as individuals, and a community, can do to push towards reconciliation, national truth-telling and a Treaty with our First Nations People. Here are a few pics from this incredible event. Thank you to all who attended. #NAIDOC2020

08.01.2022 Together with national leaders of the Uniting Church and the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress, we stand solemnly alongside protesters in the United States following the tragic death of George Floyd. We share their grief, outrage and frustration at the systemic racism that allows such incidents to happen again and again in the United States. We should also be righting injustice at home. We urgently need to address both the underlying socioeconomic factors that bring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people into contact with the justice system, as well as the systemic racism within our institutions.
