20.01.2022 From November 14 to 29 a virtual group exhibition will be held online at yava.org.au/openstudios which will showcase works from all artists, giving you a taste of what to expect when you enter their virtual studio. Join the Open Studios Tour - over three weekends, artists will hold scheduled talks, demonstrations and virtual studio tours. You can pick and choose which of these appeals to you (just like the old days!), and will be able to attend through the YAVA website, which will act as a portal for access. Artworks will also be available for purchase via the dedicated online store: this is a great way for artists to sell their work, as in-person sales are so diminished. It also just happens to be an excellent resource for seasonal present buying!

09.01.2022 A huge congratulations from us to Ballarat International Foto Biennale for gaining funds to create a new National Centre for Photography in Ballarat. "This is a very exciting day for the Ballarat International Photo Biennale and one that we have been working towards for well over 2 years. We are extremely grateful to the Andrews Government and to our local member Juliana Addison. This money is a real investment in culture - it directly supports the arts in regional Victoria ...and will no doubt generate significant visitation to Ballarat. We secured the Union Bank building in 2018 with the support of private investors and we wouldn't be here today if they didn't share the same vision we did. We are so pleased that the National Centre For Photography and its state-of-the art digital gallery space will become a reality." - Artistic Director, Fiona Sweet We look forward to visiting once complete!

06.01.2022 Hula Hoopla right at home in Clunes Victoria! Clunes based arts company Asking for Trouble Physical Theatre have found a surprising way to get their community moving during the pandemic with support from a local Hepburn Shire council grant. The pandemic has hit the creative industries incredibly hard, lots of our friends and collaborators have been severely impacted. Many artists have been quick to ‘pivot’ to find ways to get their work on the internet, neither of us were f...eeling inspired about creating online content, our practice really centres around being in the room with people and we were still reeling from the fact that our entire touring schedule for the year had disappeared overnight, but we were getting feedback particularly from local women who were keen to get moving and to train some circus skills at home. I was looking for a way to support an independent artist at the same time as bringing a little bit of joy and generosity to our local community. We’d been wanting to get our friend Hayley Hoopla up to run a series of workshops in Clunes for years but hadn’t been able to make it work timing wise, when the pandemic first hit I got in touch to see if she would be interested in creating some online content, little did I know she was in the middle of creating a series of online classes. I applied for a local Hepburn Shire Arts grant to cover the cost of both a group subscription to her classes but also for materials so everyone could build their own hula hoop. We’ve had an incredible response to the project with over 50 participants involved, with the support of the local post office we were able to negotiate safe pick up of materials and now people have been learning skills in their own homes. - Christy Flaws More information here: http://www.askingfortrouble.com.au/ Pictured: Hoop Dogg a.k.a Hayley Hoopla

04.01.2022 VALE JOHN LITTLE Regional Arts Victoria was saddened to learn of the death of John Little. John will be warmly remembered by people in regional Victoria for his outstanding service to the arts in our state over many years. He was active as a member of the Bendigo Arts Council and became a Regional Representative on the Victorian Arts Council (the predecessor to Regional Arts Victoria) board.... When the Victorian Arts Council (VAC) recognised the need to support local arts councils in activities in addition to touring, John was approached to become the first Regional Development Officer. He served in this role for more than twenty years, helping Local Arts Councils to identify and realise their goals, and later, served a period as the VAC’s Administrator. He was a keen advocate for local arts projects that reflected the strengths and flavour of the local community. His genuine love of local communities across Victoria sat comfortably with his passion for fine music, (especially opera) and his preparedness to step outside his comfort zone and embrace community based arts projects that addressed social issues. The Maze, The Oakleigh Railway Station Mural and the Hopetoun Mural were among the many projects he championed along the way. John received a Centenary Medal in 2001 for service to the community through the arts. He was a keen contributor to the shape and organisation of Regional, State and National Arts Council Conferences with an irrepressible sense of humour and remarkable ability to recall amusing anecdotes and jokes that were often signature pieces of his presentations and conversation. Beyond the support to Local Arts Councils, John and his wife Val fostered local community through their active involvement with Church, Refugee Support and Language groups. In many ways John was an advocate for community empowerment through the arts before the term was invented. His passing brings to an end a lifetime of service to the arts and local community. He is survived by his wife Val and son Joe. With thanks to Don Mackay for these words commemorating John’s legacy.
