24.01.2022 This week on Eventualities, we’re mixing things up and instead of focusing on a particular event or festival, we’ve taken some time to catch up with our good friend and Regional Events Conference MC extraordinaire, Phil Wishart. Phil has a great passion for regional events, having worked in the sport, events and tourism sectors over the past 15 years. Phil has previously worked with Destination NSW and is currently employed with the Office of Sport where he is the Head of M...arketing and Communications. Prior to this role, he was the Principal Advisor - Major Sports Events at the Office of Sport where Phil’s team worked with state and national sporting organisations, local government and venue owners to deliver on the NSW Government’s 10 World Cups in 10 Years initiative, and identify opportunities to maximise the legacy of hosting major sporting events in NSW. We hope you enjoy this conversation. Phil Wishart

23.01.2022 Grazing Down The Lachlan is a foodie adventure along the Lachlan River near Forbes in Central-West NSW, celebrating foraged and farmed regional produce. The event was awarded Bronze at the 2019 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in the Festivals and Events category. Wendy Muffet is committed to building resilient regional communities and co-founded Grazing Down the Lachlan as part of a bigger vision for building a vibrant tourism economy in Forbes and the wider Central West re...gion in NSW. Wendy and the amazing Grazing committee have already achieved so much and this is just the start of what is fast becoming a must-attend foodie event. I absolutely loved this conversation with Wendy I am in awe of her vision, values and love for her region. Please bear with us during this chat as we experienced some internet issues (one of the challenges of regional living), however I hope you agree the end result is worth it. Grazing Down the Lachlan

23.01.2022 The Big Red Bash is recognised as the world’s most remote music festival and is situated at the foot of the iconic Big Red Dune in the Simpson Desert, 35km west of Birdsville in Queensland. From its humble beginnings in 2013 of a singalong around the campfire for a few hundred people, the festival has since grown into Australia’s largest outback event with three days of music featuring a huge line up of some of Australia’s most iconic artists, attracting a sell-out crowd of ...over 9,000. Greg Donovan is the founder of the Birdsville Big Red Bash and it was fantastic to have him as my guest on this week’s Eventualities podcast. Just search for Eventualities in your preferred podcast platform. Big Red Bash

22.01.2022 What a ride! It’s been wonderful being able to share the stories of so many amazing regional events and festivals over the last 8 episodes of the Eventualities podcast. We wrap the first season with the Bathurst Winter Festival - a two-week event during the July school holidays which embraces the magic of Bathurst’s Winter. It’s very quickly gaining a reputation as a vibrant and creative destination. Hannah Welch is the Manager of Events at Bathurst Regional Council and has... been involved since the inception of the Bathurst Winter Festival. Hannah was a presenter at the 2018 Regional Events Conference in Port Macquarie. Thanks to Hannah for her insights and for being so generous with sharing their learnings. Thanks to everyone for tuning in for season 1 and stay tuned for season 2 coming soon. We would love to hear your suggestions for future episodes. 19.01.2022 The Parkes Elvis Festival is held every year in the second week in January, coinciding with Elvis Presley’s birthday. Now in its 29th year, the Festival continues to grow with more than 200 events across five fabulous, fun-filled days. Officially endorsed by the estate of Elvis Presley, Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. in Memphis, Parkes Elvis Festival hosts a number of live entertainment including the official Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest (the winner representing Aust...ralia in Memphis, USA), Feature concert series starring a special guest artist, Northparkes Mines street parade, renewal of vows ceremony, the Goodsell Machinery Miss Priscilla Dinner, and many free live concerts, competitions and prizes. The Festival attracts over 25,000 fans, both nationally and internationally, having a global reach of more than 200 million with exposure in the United States, the United Kingdom and Asia. I’m delighted to welcome Cathy Treasure, Festival Director of the Parkes Elvis Festival to the Eventualities podcast this week. 18.01.2022 It’s equal parts exciting and terrifying to release my latest project into the world. As we all know, 2020 has not gone to plan (and if there’s one thing event managers like, it’s a plan). I’ve been an avid podcast listener for years now and I’ve always wanted to try my hand at it and initially thought I’d create a podcast around pubs (that’s a story for another day and may well see the light of the day at a future date). As we saw the effects of a pandemic take place and wip...e out an industry I love and have been involved with for 20+ years, the seed of an idea was born. What if I could bring the stories of regional festivals and events (the one’s we would normally showcase at the Regional Events Conference) to life in another format. What if I could shine a light on the people behind the scenes, demonstrate the impact these events have on regional communities and take a walk back in time to the very beginnings (because every event has to start somewhere right?). So today, the Eventualties podcast launches. The first episode is a trailer and our first interview will drop later this week. I’d love for you to take a listen and subscribe if you think it’s your thing. A few thank yous to some superstars who have helped me get to this point: Darcy from ProPodcast Productions for helping to get this out there and for your patience and knowledgeyou are the best in the business. Rach Viski from Minta Viski for your continually fantastic design abilities and for just getting it. Rach Anderson from Assembld for putting my brain dumps and random musings into concise and appealing words. I’m really looking forward to taking you on the Eventualities adventure and who knows where we’ll end up. 17.01.2022 Day 1, done! We’ve had a great afternoon being inspired to make our events just that little bit more special by Peter Jones Special Events, hearing about the mammoth behind the scenes effort to bring together the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 from Patrick Kidd, and delving into committee and community burn-out plus what it takes to turn it around with Krista Hauritz. Tonight, we’re relaxing and enjoying catching up with new + old regional event friends at our Welcome Reception at the Old Dubbo Gaol. Looking forward to more great insights and inspiration tomorrow where we’ll be diving into topics like risk, sustainability, marketing and business events!

16.01.2022 Can you believe it's already been a whole week since we wrapped up? Thanks to some of this year’s fantastic crop of delegates for sharing with #RECdubbo on Instagram. Here’s a few of our faves! 1. @iamthenightrider 2. @caseyanne89 3. @captainjonnobeard... 4. @turnstyle.events 5. @123tix 6. @milestonecreatv See more

15.01.2022 We all know event evaluation is a pretty important aspect of any event So, if you came along to #RECdubbo, have you completed our survey (and the one from our friends at Destination NSW) yet? We’d love to hear your feedback on the conference!

13.01.2022 Part B of my talk with Vicky from the Deni Ute Muster is now live. Hear about ticketing, risk management, marketing, 2020 event and where to from here for this iconic event. Vicky is so generous with sharing her knowledge and experience and if you haven’t downloaded Part A yet, we suggest heading back and taking a listen. Just search for Eventualities through your favourite podcasting platform.... courtesy of the Deni Ute Muster

12.01.2022 Hey friends, we've got a little news about REC to share. This year *cue the violins playing sad songs* we won't be holding our beloved Regional Events Conference. We know, we know, we have absolutely a-DORED catching up with our regional event friends and making new ones over the past four years.... We've been inspired, learnt a whole lot, and of course had some good [like, *really* good!] times in Wagga, Port Macquarie and Dubbo since we started REC back in 2016. But now? It's time to take a break, take some time to go through the feedback we've received over the years, and consider how we might be able to make our fifth REC even better. Yes, you read that right, there will be another REC we'll be back in 2021! In the meantime, we know you'll still be creating, reenergising + reinvigorating some of the best regional events around, we'll certainly still be working on a few, and we'll no doubt see many of you at industry events and other conferences. Chat soon, friends!

12.01.2022 We’re thrilled to have our fourth year of the Regional Events Conference deliver plenty of learnings and laughs while bringing together some of the industry’s best and brightest. Here’s some more of we got up to last week in Dubbo, captured by Sarah O'Neill Photography.

11.01.2022 The Deni Ute Muster should have been taking place this weekend, however 2020 had other plans. I’m delighted to have Vicky Lowry, GM of the Deni Ute Muster as my first guest on the Eventualities podcast. I could have spent all day listening to Vicky speak about this iconic regional event and because our interview was longer than usual, I’ve decided to break it up over two weeks. Part A covers the history of the event (I’m still amazed at what the committee achieved in the first year), community involvement and support, volunteers and performers. You can listen on any of your favourite podcast platforms and if you’re a fan, please subscribe and leave a review (and let some of your other event peeps know about it as well) #eventualitiespodcast courtesy of Deni Ute Muster

10.01.2022 If you haven't heard of Willinga Park, then it's time to get acquainted! This state of the art conferencing facility also a world-class equestrian centre will certainly go far in proving [as we, and all of our regional event friends already know!] that you don't need to be in a major city to find high quality spaces and facilities for all kinds of events. In November, we [Belinda + Andrew] attended the opening and were blown away. Here's a few of the photos from the night... definitely not taken by us, in case you thought we'd thrown in the events gig in favour of photography. Willinga Park have shared the full gallery here https://willingapark.com.au/the-equine-education-centre-op/ or check out the YouTube video: https://youtu.be/hDuZQWNUj50 They're located on 2,000 acres on the NSW South Coast, and we were glad to hear they successfully defended the property from recent bushfires. They'll no doubt help the region recover through the events they'll bring and the flow-on economic impacts. If you're interested, you can find out more about their venue here: https://willingapark.com.au/the-equine-education-centre/

09.01.2022 Hot off the press we've got your Friday afternoon reading sorted, courtesy of our Media Partner, Australasian Special Events. Enjoy!

09.01.2022 Thanks to all of the passionate and enthusiastic regional event friends who joined us for #RECdubbo last week! It was fantastic to have plenty of familiar faces alongside new ones, all ready to learn from our line-up, share experiences [and a few laughs] with other delegates, and have a great time living and breathing all things events for a few days. Thanks also to our brilliant host destination Dubbo City, Strategic Sponsor Destination NSW, and Media Partner Australasian ...Special Events. Stay tuned for more photos like these snapped by our photographer Sarah O'Neill Photography, real soon.

09.01.2022 Phew what a massive Day 2! We kicked off with Josie Howard from Dubbo Regional Council [who also brought along some friends] sharing how they pulled together an event for thousands in just a few weeks as part of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Australian tour last October. We also took a look at winning and losing business events and the power of storytelling, followed by a run down on how the Deni Ute Muster tackles risk, safety and security.... Our panel on event sustainability was a favourite amongst delegates, and we heard perspectives from Grazing Down The Lachlan, the Sydney Sustainability Centre and Orange FOOD Week. The top takeaway was the importance of having a holistic view towards event sustainability, plus there were a range of great resources shared with delegates. Last, but not least, we ended the afternoon with Alana Hay from Milestone Creative Australia #eventprofs who looked at current and future event marketing trends, sharing data and insights from the industry. We gave our delegates a couple of hours off after a jam-packed day so they could relax and take a break before tonight’s conference dinner at Two Doors, and we're looking forward to doing it all again tomorrow for Day 3!

09.01.2022 We’ve been a little quiet over here lately. But that’s all about to change. We are super excited to be launching a new project next week. Stay tuned

06.01.2022 From utes to bikesour next episode has dropped. I’m thrilled to welcome Phil McIntosh from Gears and Beers to the Eventualities podcast this week. Cycle enthusiasts from across the country gather annually in Wagga Wagga, NSW on the October long weekend for what is fast becoming one of the premier cycling events. ... The annual Gears and Beers Festival is a community cycle challenge, combined with a craft beer and cider Festival. The event is conceived and run by the Rotary Club of Wollundry Wagga Wagga. In this episode, Phil talks about the history of the event, the growing popularity of cycling events, volunteers and having multiple Rotary clubs and other community groups readily able to assist, marketing, the 2020 event and where to from here, community and the people that help make Gear and Beers what it is. Phil is such a genuine and lovely guy who is so community-minded and is extremely passionate about this amazing event he has created and continues to grow. I hope you enjoy this episode. Gears and Beers

06.01.2022 We’re all ready to kick off #RECdubbo very soon but first? Coffee, of course! Here’s Peter Jones who’ll be our very first session exploring what makes an event special, Destination NSW’s regional conferencing head cheerleader Helen Parker, and never one to miss out on a photo op our MC, Phil Wishart.

06.01.2022 Back by popular demand around 82% of which was his own for a third year on the mic as MC is Phil Wishart! We’re thrilled he hasn’t yet abandoned us for the professional MC circuit, and is pretty keen to join us in Dubbo this week [now that he’s finished swanning around Europe, of course!]. He’s been front and centre at REC each year, so it’s no surprise we’ve been able to put together a montage of his best moments. Enjoy!

05.01.2022 The Lismore Lantern Parade is an annual community event held on or around the longest night of the year, being the Winter Solstice. The event attracts approximately 30,000 people each year and has been formally recognised by Lismore City Council as its signature event. Each year the Lantern Parade involves participants from Lismore, throughout the Northern Rivers and visitors to the region who have attended workshops in lantern, mask and costume making. School and community w...orkshops start at Easter each year with many other volunteers travelling from across the country to participate in this event. LightnUp Inc are the producers of the Lismore Lantern Parade and run year round programs and workshops throughout regional, rural and metropolitan Australia, including lantern making, shadow theatre, illuminated puppets, masks and costume making, and story development. Jyllie Jackson is the CEO and Creative Director of the Lismore Lantern Parade. I really enjoyed this conversation with Jyllie and hope this chat makes your day a little brighter.
