22.01.2022 When it comes to AAC, significant aided input (i.e., using the AAC system to talk to the learner) is the first step of implementation. Some learners pick it up ...quickly and some need a long time before they begin to use their AAC. It’s often a challenge for parents and professionals to keep going without much feedback from the learner that it’s working. It’s important to celebrate all progress even the wins that are less obvious. Noticing these successes will help you stick with it. What are some of your AAC wins? See more

12.01.2022 "Make CONVERSATION, RELATIONSHIPS, and INTEREST the goal. Not 'teaching AAC.'" - Laura Taylor, MEd I'm fortunate to have friends, colleagues, and mentors who co...ntinue to help me grow, who challenge my thinking, and who make me a stronger SLP. One of those people is Laura Taylor. Laura is a special education teacher who learned the power of teaching real language to her students. She became a PODD trainer and shares this passion for authentic communication with others. Sometimes we get so focused on the device, the system, the symbols. We forget that our goal is not really to teach X many symbols. It's really to forge relationships, to build connection, and to foster conversation around our interests and the interests of others. Thanks to Laura Taylor for sharing this bit of wisdom!
