25.01.2022 Last day to get your likes on for Miss Julias choreography competition. Thanks to everyone who has already done so

25.01.2022 You start by taking your 3 year old daughter to dance class as something to fill an hour of her week and give her an outlet for her energy. She comes home fro...m class and continues to dance around the house, wearing a few spare scarves from your cupboard or last years princess costume from the dress up box - asking every day "do I go to dance today?" Next thing you know, you're complaining about the hours spent driving back and forth to the studio, the later-than-you'd-like rehearsal (on a school night?), time sitting and waiting at the studio for classes to end when you have a million other places to be, and don't even get me started on the money - tuition, shoes, shoes, costumes, shoes. Did I mention shoes? You fret and worry that a "normal" childhood is passing her by. She's not on the netball team, she's not a runner or in the swim club. She's rarely at the dinner table because she has a class almost every night of the week. Family holidays are planned around rehearsals. But before you know it, she's danced her last concert and discarded her last pair of shoes and it's all over too soon. When it's all over and she's left the stage for the last time, will you remember the hours, the money, the worry of the physical toll? My guess is "NO". You will remember the gifts dance has given her: the ability to prioritise and multitask, a strong, flexible body, the ability to handle pressure and last minute changes, and an appreciation for music not currently heard on the radio. You will be grateful you are sending your daughter out into the world with with a strong work ethic and long attention span. You will have a great sense of peace knowing your daughter is part of a strong circle of young women equally capable of lifting one another up when the road is rough, as they are out celebrating one another's triumphs. In the end, you can pat yourself on the back because taking her to that first dance class years ago was one of the best parenting decisions you made www.hairenpointe.com.au @konsphotography @lia.ballerina See more

22.01.2022 Its been a difficult few weeks as we all adjust to a new reality. Given that today would have been the NS Provincial Championships, Im sharing some thoughts o...n how to stay positive in all of this. Dance has always been an outlet for me, especially in times of stress and grief - a place to clear my mind and keep me happy. I know its the same for so many others. Not having competitions to work towards is leaving a lot of dancers and teachers feeling lost, compounding feelings of stress and grief. To those who have been working tirelessly towards a big goal that they wont get the chance to achieve, please remember your chance to shine will come again. Ive watched so many dancers miss out on their "shot" to achieve a big dream, only to achieve it (or another big goal) later, after they thought their chance had passed. Maybe this was your last year before moving into a higher age category, maybe its the first year youve been injury free for a long time, maybe it was your first chance to compete at Cowal or to rep for Canadians or USIRs, or maybe it was your last. Whatever your situation, if you want to continue dancing, your chance will come again (maybe in a different form than you originally imagined). Whether or not you achieve that big competitive goal, at the end of the day, your talent as a dancer is not only defined by your competitive success. Use this time to work on your talent, and remember why you started dancing in the first place. Share your talent with your friends and family, because few things are more rewarding than bringing joy to those who need it. Competitions help us become the best possible dancers we can be by pushing our limits - thats why we do them, but we can continue to become amazing dancers without them. Take this time to master those difficult corrections, without the pressure of competition and full of your love for dance. See more

21.01.2022 RSHD Brisbane Concert 2020 Thank you to all who helped make the performance this year possible and an extra big thank you to all these hard-working dancers who continue to inspire me more and more with every performance

21.01.2022 There were definitely a few quiet tears of joy to finally be back together doing what we love this week after a long 10 weeks on zoom! Heres a little snippet from our fun blue bonnets at the end of the premier class

21.01.2022 NDAAI Exams Weekend 2 Congratulations Flora exam dancers! Looking absolutely gorgeous

19.01.2022 A wonderful afternoon practicing and filming our OzScot Junior Development Squad hornpipe choreography that the girls have been learning all term. The girls worked so well as a team, analysing each run to help each other refine the choreography and synchronicity. So much fun to get all dressed up and perform again!

19.01.2022 Print it out... stick it on the fridge... dont miss out!!! #yourparticipationisthemotivation #interactivehighlanddancingfestival #highlanddance #thedancethathasitall

18.01.2022 NDAAI Exams Weekend 2 Great work grade 2 dancers!! Smashing effort today

18.01.2022 Some tips for practising at home! The current situation has made us have to train at home- whether we like it or not! So here are some tips to make it a little ...more bearable! 1. WHEN & WHERE: Schedule a time and a place. This means not just a time and a place that suits you, but one that suits everyone in your household (its no fun trying to watch TV with someone bobbing up and down in front of you, or trying to get a nap when someones dancing the jig upstairs). Pick a time and a place where youll have limited distractions and youre not distracting everyone else too! Let everyone else know this is your plan- not only will it make you more accountable and more likely to do your practise, but it should let everyone else plan around you and keep them from interrupting your practise too! 2. WHIP YOUR PRACTISE AREA INTO SHAPE: Make your practise space somewhere you actually want to practise. It doesnt have to be a huge area- lots of dancing is danced on the spot and you can adapt almost every other movement to be danced on the spot, but make it comfortable (e.g. put a mat down to make it easier on your legs, find and use a mirror if you can, position your phone well for videos etc). If you can leave your space so that its always ready for practise then do this, youre more likely to want to practise if you dont have to rearrange the furniture every time you go to do it! Adapt your practise to this area, dont get frustrated by movements you cant fit in, either make them work or move on to something you can practise properly. 3. WARM-UP: Make sure to warm-up! When practising at home it can be really easy to slip into a Right, its dancing time, lets dance a fling mindset with no warm-up. Theres nothing enjoyable about trying to dance on stiff legs and youre not going to give your best dancing. Start your practise the right way, youll be more likely to get the best out of your body and therefore have a more positive practise experience. 4. WHY ARE YOU PRACTISING?: Make sure your practise is useful. Set goals and try to fix at least something. Practise is to make you better, you are training your body to perform to a higher level so just running through the dances as quickly as possible is unlikely to do anything for your dancing. Before you start any step, exercise, drill etc think about WHY you are doing it. Try not to move on to new things until you feel you have at least a little bit of improvement on what you have been working on. If youre really struggling with a particular movement and cant see much improvement, Id suggest filming it and moving on for now. You can then either send the video on to someone else for help or can look back at it yourself in a little while. Dont let one movement ruin an entire practise, you can come back to it another time. 5. NO WARS!: And finally, the last pointer for now (and probably the hardest one). Try not to argue with everyone in your household when youre trying to practise! If this keeps happening find ways to alleviate the problem, discuss why its happening out with the practise session when everyone is more calm. Lots of parents/guardians want to help out but sometimes giving your dancer feedback whilst theyre dancing just doesnt work- that doesnt mean to say you shouldnt try to help but find other ways to do so that work for your dancer. Heres some examples: Rather than giving verbal feedback which can very quickly become a shouting match- write your feedback down and let your dancer come back to it. Video your dancer and take screenshots to show them where they need to work on- the camera never lies! Video your dancer and let them watch it back themselves and critique. Use another dancer (e.g. lots of great Cowal videos on youtube) to point out what you want your dancer to work on so that not everything is aimed directly at your dancer. I hope this helps a little bit! Were all in the same boat and know its not easy but keeping up dancing is a great way to keep a little bit of normality. Youll also find a great sense of achievement after a good practise where youve been physically active and have fixed or improved something! Imagine coming out of isolation with better leaps, highcuts, turnout or whatever you choose- nows your chance to make a start! Happy dancing!

17.01.2022 Bring your kilt to class day! (Only remembered to take pics of one class whoops)

16.01.2022 In celebration of International Dance Day we thought we would share our favourite choreography performance from last year at our all time favourite competition. Presenting Colours of the Wind by Sammy, Caitie, Steph and Madi ... I was so immensely proud of how the girls embraced the challenge of dancing together as a team, synchronisation, uniformity and the performance aspect of highland which is so often overlooked in competition training. I think they absolutely nailed it! (But Im probably biased ) Enjoy

16.01.2022 An amazing opportunity today for our premier dancers Hollie, Ruth, Sammy, Caitie and Madi who had the privilege of attending their first OzScot Workshop as part of the Junior Development Squad! 03.01.2022 RSHD Spirit Week This past week we have been celebrating all things highland dancing and team RSHD! On Monday the challenge was to put on your costumes and film your favourite Highland dance and your favourite National dance... On Tuesday the class theme wear was spots and stripes! On Wednesday the challenge was to share your favourite photo from a competition or performance On Thursday the class theme was crazy hair! On Friday the challenge was to call a teammate and have a chat or a practice together. And Saturday was our Live Feedback Session based on the videos entered from Monday. This was an opportunity for the dancers to enjoy each others company and to receive some compliments and feedback on their dancing from someone other than Miss Caitlin. A huge heartfelt thanks to Cheryl and Amy Roach for taking the time to give feedback to our dancers; you are both a huge inspiration to all in highland dancing including myself and the dancers felt so privileged to hear your wisdom. What a fantastic week filled with so much joy and love for highland dancing! Thank you to all who got excited and got involved all week long

(Missed a picture of the Grade 2s)

01.01.2022 NDAAI Exams Weekend 2 Well done Grade 1 dancers!! And an extra special congrats to those for whom this was their first exam too
