25.01.2022 It’s been a big week. It’s set to be a big weekend. Take care! And if you can, make sure you keep using your privilege.
25.01.2022 We’re excited to share the wayfinding and signage we’ve been working on with @currumbinsanctuary It was important to us and CWS that all new work celebrated Yugambeh culture, as well as featuring Yugambeh language in co-naming precincts, the signage also features work by artist Luther Cora. The wayfinding sets the stage for broader interpretation of Indigenous Knowledge and culture to be structured across the sanctuary. It was also important that the materials used for the si...gnage complemented the natural environment of the Sanctuary. @emvielle #creativegold #wayfinding #currumbinwildlifesanctuary #currumbin #signage #yugambeh #goldcoastdesigner See more
24.01.2022 Ana Diaz Severiche spent the start of this year doing Work Integrated Learning with Relative Creative through @qcagriffith . We chose to have Ana spend time in the studio as part of our Artist in Residence program. Originally from Colombia, Ana is studying a Bachelor of Design. She did 100 hours with us researching the impacts of Covid-19 on the "Future of work" as well as getting involved in some of the visual communication design work we were doing. Ana says of her time at Relative Creative that it was "good to be part of a socially and environmentally oriented practice". Thanks for joining us for a few months Ana, we're looking forward to seeing your practice develop! -- #workexperience #artistinresidence #griffithuniveristy #futureofwork #qca #designpractice #creativegold #inthestudio
23.01.2022 Our strategic design skills are integral to our practice but we match them with high quality visual communication design. This is clearly present within the yourtown Indigenous Participation Plan. Relative Creative co-designed a communications strategy and suite of participatory tools and maps that assisted yourtown’s Indigenous Participation Plan. As a team we have a clear grasp of many complex issues and we can apply this meaningfully in our design work. __ #visualcommunicationdesign #smartandpretty #strategicdesign #decolonisingdesign #goldcoastdesignpractice #creativepractice

22.01.2022 Sharing a few more snaps of our work for Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. These wayfinding signs are part of a bigger visitor experience strategy, part of which included naming different zones of the park. These zones are named in both English and Yugambeh. Including Yugambeh language was a really important part of this project and we hope visitors enjoy learning the local language. We’re really proud of this work and hope people enjoy using it to move around the Sanctuary. @emvielle -- #yugambeh #yugambehlanguage #whosecountryareyouon #wayfinding #decolonise #currumbinwildlifesanctuary
22.01.2022 Today is National Sorry Day. We’re taking time to sit with the discomfort of remembering the Stolen Generations and our Gamilaroi ancestors. We acknowledge the past and present generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have been taken from their families, disconnected from culture and Country. We acknowledge this is still happening. Since colonisation, unjust government policies have degraded the self-determination of First Nation communities, causing th...e intergenerational trauma that ripples through our country today. Today we remember, say sorry, stand in solidarity and reinvigorate our efforts in bringing forth the structural changes Australia needs to make. 21.01.2022 WHITE PRIVILEGE is - not being judged by your name when applying for a job, rental housing, a mortgage or bank credit - being raised (and raising your children) to think police are safe - being well represented at all levels of government, in the media and throughout the education system. - not having to deal with institutional racism every.single.day... - not feeling the ache of tiredness in your bones because you’re still fighting a fight that the generations before you have fought, for equality, for reparation, for a voice - learning about racism, not experiencing it every day - having your culture centred and celebrated throughout the arts and education system - not worrying that when you show up to hospital, heavily pregnant with a fever and other symptoms that you’ll be sent away with some panadol - not experiencing intergenerational trauma - not being wilfully misrepresented in the media - knowing that you’re kid is unlikely to be slammed headfirst into concrete by a policeman ‘having a bad day’ - not having to worry about how you/your children will be treated and/or judged in the public sphere - not having to teach your children how to respond to police so that they can stay safe - caring more about the destruction of property than the destruction of black lives - not being questioned over what you spend compensation money on - not being racially profiled when you do your groceries, go to the shops, gather in a public space - not the same as class privilege - not having to do the mental labour of explaining to and educating your oppressors how you are oppressed - not the same as being racist, but does contribute to racism - not solved by pretending colour doesn’t exist - real - something we need to work to dismantle - systemic. And so much more besides. If you are working on your allyship make sure you know how to check your privilege, think about how you might use your privilege to help dismantle the systemic racism that exists in our society (and in the US and the UK and many other countries besides). Acknowledging your privilege isn't the same as not being proud of what you've achieved, it's about recognising that the systems that we live within. @ RelativeCreative
21.01.2022 One more week of public consultation for The Spit placemaking and identity strategy. Both concepts feature expressive, stylised maps of The Spit in their linework, suggestive of the changing landforms of The Spit over time. The oyster has emerged as a key element, reflective of its significant role in Indigenous histories evidenced in shell middens and in contemporary Indigenous and European histories evidenced through the Spit’s oyster farming and trade from the late 1800’s... to mid 1900’s. The concepts are intentionally colourful, featuring the same colour palette from The Spit Public Realm Guidelines. In this way the concepts work to compliment the recommended character in The Spit’s current and future built form and public realm works. Most importantly, the concepts, just like The Spit, invoke an adventurous, playful quality, inviting visitors in to explore! We look forward to hearing what you love about each, find the email to submit this ad see more of each concept on the consultation website, https://gcwa.qld.gov.au/the-spit-placemaking-identity-stra/! 20.01.2022 CHANGING THE WAY WE WORK: one of the discussions we had during the Gold Coast City Futures Forum was how a shift to a four day work week could be beneficial to reducing our impact on the environment, it would also give people more time to participate in democracy. A universal basic income could support this transition, as well as a transition away from industries with high climate/environmental impacts. As ever, unions are likely to be at the forefront of fighting for this ch...ange, as the were for the fight for the 8 hour day, sick pay and many of the other ‘rights’ we often take for granted today. Do we need to rethink work and labour in the face of the climate crisis? Most definitely. #labourday #workersoftheworldunite #universalbasicincome #4dayworkweek #fourdayworkweek #unionise #justtransition #justtransitions #thefutureisfull #cityfuturesforum #creatingthefuture @ RelativeCreative See more

17.01.2022 Since 2016, we have worked with Brisbane City Council’s Green Heart Schools to design and deliver the Future BNE Challenge. This annual challenge, which is the largest one day educational event in Australia, seeks to engage school aged children in thinking about sustainable approaches to engaging with the Brisbane city. ABOUT THE 2020 PROGRAM The Future BNE Challenge is an immersive and interactive, future-thinking learning experience. Students follow a narrative delivered by... the time-travelling 2100 Future BNE response team, who guides students in addressing Brisbane’s current sustainability challenges. The challenge involves critically analysing what contributes to creating a sustainable city from local and global perspectives as well as designing innovative and creative solutions to make Brisbane the cleanest and greenest city in Australia. For 2020’s Future BNE, we re-imagined how we could deliver the challenge. To allow more students to engage, the event has now made the move from a one day excursion to an incursion. This change allows flexibility in delivery and for wider audience engagement, with Brisbane City Council now able to hold incursions periodically (once COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed). #designforkids #sustainablecity #thefutureisfull #designchallenge #imaginethefuture #reimaginethefuture #futurebne #futurebnechallenge #incursion #schoolincursions #creativekids See more
16.01.2022 In June 2018 we began working on a project and undertaking community engagement about new, exciting and respectful ways to reimagine the way Aboriginal cultures are understood and experienced in and around a museum. 15.01.2022 Still so excited about how great our museum interpretative information and communication has come together inside the museum. This marks phase 1 of several more phases of reimagining James Cook Museum, with a particular focus on giving balance to First Nations stories. 11.01.2022 As our national politics continue to reflect an ignorance for the climate crisis, we must fall out of line and bring forward tough conversations about our future anyway. Although the country is not currently burning away uncontrollably, this is not the time to table conversations around fire management for Australia. With many humans displaced, lives lost, and over 3 billion animals lost during our last fire season, we cannot afford to sit by. A way forward is looking at Firs...t Nations fire practices. These practices served Aboriginal people for over 65,000 years and were integral in managing the land. Making space to listen to this knowledge would allow for a more holistic approach to fire management that serves us all whilst paying deep respect to the knowledge, wisdom, and traditions of Aboriginal people, the custodians of this land. Climate change will only heighten the intensity of natural disasters, so we must have these important conversations, we must listen carefully, and then we must hold our leaders to account. __ #Indigenousknowledge #bushfireseason #firepolicy #learnfromthepast #climatecrisis #itsgettinghotinhere #Indigenousfiremanagement #listenandlearn #firecountry See more

11.01.2022 We are very excited to share the two concepts we've developed for the placemaking and identity strategy for The Spit! Following the finalisation of The Spit Public Realm Guidelines, Relative Creative have been engaged to develop The Spit placemaking and identity strategy. We created the concepts by studying the master plan and background studies, global and local placemaking and identity cases, by mapping significant environment and ecology species, identifying key built form...s and histories and by synthesising key patterns and trends. Drawing on consultation with representatives from the Danggan Balun Five Rivers People, the registered native title claimant party, along with The Spit Placemaking Working Group, we have refined two concepts for public consultation. Both concepts feature expressive, stylised maps of The Spit in their linework, suggestive of the changing landforms of The Spit over time. The oyster has emerged as a key element, reflective of its significant role in Indigenous histories evidenced in shell middens and in contemporary Indigenous and European histories evidenced through the Spit’s oyster farming and trade from the late 1800’s to mid 1900’s. The concepts are intentionally colourful, featuring the same colour palette from The Spit Public Realm Guidelines. 08.01.2022 What is paying the rent? Paying the rent is a concept that has been around since at least the 1970s. ... This action acknowledges that we live on unceded sovereign land and that reparations for this theft, the theft of wages and the theft of children are owed. It recognises that no Australian Government has taken these reparations seriously and provides a groundswell of action by citizens, organisations and business. ...... While paying the rent certainly does not cover the extent of wrongdoing, and is an action that should be taken alongside other decolonising actions, it takes a step towards repairing the wealth gap established and reinforced by colonisation. It recognises that wealth is inherited, acknowledges responsibility and allows compensation. Remember white privilege is not the same as class privilege. ... How could I do this? Organisations and citizens approach paying the rent in different ways, including paying a % of profit or % of income, or through reduced membership or entry fees for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. .. Who should I pay the rent to? This is really up to you and we encourage doing your research but a few you could consider are: Your local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander land council or organisation. @childrensground @seedmob @grassroots_ptr provides a way to donate and a whole range of other resources Sisters Inside/Free Her Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance Many of the families seeking justice for deaths in custody also have funds set up to support their efforts. -- #paytherent #uncededland #reparations #whiteaustraliahasablackhistory #uncededsovereignland #inheritedwealth #stolenwealth See more
08.01.2022 We are excited to be participating in the Csu Pluriversitte an experimental informal education research & design project. A project dreamed and brought to life by a long-term collaborator and comrade of our Jnis Kinasts. Grounded in place in Cesis, Latvia but global in its reach it is a long-term project designed to review approaches to higher education and, instead of building a new building in Cesis, to create an urban environment and knowledge community that can trans...form all Cesis into an alternative University. The Pluriversity of Cesis critically analyzes AND imagines the future coming to us in order to create such educational content that is suitable for the world, which is characterized by: climate crisis (including unprecedented epidemics closely linked to anthropogenic pressures on natural ecosystems); successive geopolitical tensions and socio-economic disasters; millions of people have been forced to flee; unprecedented urbanization in the form of slum and mega cities becoming the dominant forms of the urban environment; technological hegemony; above all - the global-local nature of such conditions and their impact on Latvia and any of us. Cesis Pluriversity asks a simple question: "What futures are approaching us and what do we need to learn to adapt to them?" __ #cesispluriversity #cesupluriversitate #cesis #summerschool #vasarasskola2020 #vasarasskola #geography #design #philosophy #education #futures #climatechange #transformation #designresearch #research #rethinkingeducation

07.01.2022 It is National Reconciliation Week, the intention of which is to highlight how "reconciliation is a journey for all Australians as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation." Importantly this journey is about relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. But the broader Australian community needs to come to the table on this. One way to do this as a non-Indigenous person is to ge...t informed about the experiences and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, as well as exploring a more nuanced understanding of the history of colonisation and the ongoing impacts this has had. There are some great resources that can support doing this. We highly recommend the books pictured here: Welcome to Country, Prof. Marcia Langton which acts as a travel guide to Australia from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective. This book is particularly timely as it looks as though our travel will be staying local for the foreseeable future. Fire Country, Victor Stephenson explores Indigenous Knowledge of fire management and is a timely response to the recent bushfire crisis but also highlights the impact ignoring and devaluing Indigenous Knowledge has had and the huge potential to properly engage with this knowledge from an Indigenous-led perspective. Finding the Heart of the Nation, Thomas Mayor explores the Statement from the Heart and should be read by all Australians to better understand the Uluru Statement, what this is calling for and why. 04.01.2022 Today is Mabo day, the anniversary of the historic Mabo decision in 1992. On this day the High Court overturned the legal fiction of terra nullius, recognising the special relationship Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with the land, and paving the way for Native Title. This is an important day to remember Eddie Koiki Mabo; a man so passionate about family, home and culture that he fought an entire nation and its legal system, and won! It is also an importa...nt day to remember the extreme inequalities, oppression and systemic violence that this country is founded on. We are standing on stolen land, sovereignty has never been ceded. We also continue to see Native Title undermined by mining corporations. Understanding all of this is important in working toward dismantling the systemic racism deeply rooted in Australian society, to continue working towards decolonisation, to fight for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander justice. There are so many great resources doing the rounds, and some really great Instagram accounts worth following if you want to learn more. 04.01.2022 Wandharra Dhawun, hello friend! This week we've been working on the lands of the Guugu Yimidhirr peoples (so called Cooktown) and we're excited to start sharing an important project with you. We have been working with @nationaltrustqld on reimagining the James Cook Museum since 2018. This process has included extensive consultation with locals, particularly local Bama-ngay, on their vision for the museum. The process has also included consultation with visitors to the museum ...and research into museum best practice, informed by the work in this space by the indefatigable Terri Janke. The reimagined exhibitions weave together stories from the perspective of local Bama, the town, Cook and the sisters who lived in the building when it was a convent. It was integral to our practice to ensure that there was a process of truth-telling within the museum but one that honoured the way Cooktown locals (Bama and non-Bama) share and celebrate the significance of Reconciliation Rocks story. We can't wait to share more but here's a glimpse at what's been installed so far.
