19.01.2022 Every single child I have worked with makes comments about loving the games we play together. They all love that I get down to sit with them on the floor, pillow or rug and the fact I will laugh and giggle with them, listen and be appropriately silly. Every single child without exception somewhere in our time together or sometimes multiple times says, I wish my mum/dad/parents played with me more. Playing together bonds us, creates memories, rituals, family traditions, an...d carves time out of our busy lives to focus on and enjoy each other. A powerful quote from Jon Kabat-Zinn (mindfulness expert and founder of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course) is: ‘The little things, the little moments. They aren’t little.’ Even on our busiest of days, setting aside some precious time to laugh and have fun with our children is so important for their mental health and wellbeing, as well as for ours. Playing games and laughing with your children, being silly and having fun builds and strengthens your connection which is important for those times when they aren’t feeling the best and need to have that sense of connection to be able to reach out to you for support. It also gives you plenty of time to slip in ‘nuggets of gold’ without being or sounding all ‘parenty’ as one of the kids I worked with calls it. Laughing, being silly & having fun lowers your stress levels, it decreases cortisol, strengthens your immune system, and produces endorphins (our body’s natural feel-good chemical), which reduces worry, stress, and pain. Anxiety and stress are increasing factors in the lives of our children & for us as parents. Adding in some laughter and fun each day have wide-ranging benefits on both our physical and mental wellbeing. We still have a few weeks left of the holidays here in Australia, enjoy the time together and remember....
