16.01.2022 YOUR WEDDING VIDEO IS FADING AWAY For most of us, our wedding is one of the biggest days of our lives and if you were fortunate enough to be able to capture your day on video then you might be alarmed to find out that the tape your wedding video is stored on is deteriorating and will become completely unwatchable unless you transfer it to DVD. The problem with video tape is that it uses magnetic particles which are aligned based on the charge they are given when recorded. ... But this magnetic charge gradually fades resulting in the picture degrading to the point of being totally ruined. Once the image is gone it is gone forever - THERE IS NO WAY TO RESTORE IT Premium quality archival video tapes like those used by broadcast TV stations may have a usable life of 20 years or more BUT consumer grade tapes will start to degrade in as little as 5 years and can be unwatchable in 10 years. And that is assuming they are stored correctly - in a cool, dark, dry place away from any magnetic interference. So what is the solution? Well, the bad news is that if your tape has already started to degrade then there is no way to bring it back to original quality. BUT . . . we can capture it as it is today and lock in the quality forever by transferring it to DVD in digital format. DVD's have a shelf life measured in decades and can be easily copied to your computer or the Internet to be shared and stored forever. For a small investment it is possible to preserve your precious memories so that future generations will be able to look back and see their family history. 02.01.2022 Care & Storage of Your Old 8mm & 16mm Films If you have any precious memories on film then read on . . . Over time I have researched film storage and preservation. This has been prompted by the various condition of the films I get for transfer which vary from as good as the day they were processed to absolutely terrible, in some cases they have been left too long and are too bad to transfer, a precious moment lost forever.... But age is not always the prime factor, storage is.... When you consider these films are up to 50 or more years old its easy to understand that they suffer the ravages of time and to keep them in as best condition as possible requires a little thought and action. While we strongly recommend transferring them to DVD as soon as possible, we understand that its not always feasible to do it right now. So what is the best way to store your old films? Where possible, keep them in their original packaging ie: the reel cover and paper envelope they came in. If these are long gone store them separately in paper envelopes. Don’t store them in plastic bags - these sweat and condensation builds up on the film speeding up deterioration. Label your films, date and subject where possible. Place these envelopes in a cardboard box (shoe box with a lid?)and place them in a cool dark cupboard inside the house where temperature and humidity are most stable. Don't store film near heaters, plumbing pipes, radiators, sprinklers, windows, electrical sources, or sinks. Do not store film in direct sunlight. Avoid high humidity - do not store in a basement. Most basements are quite humid and perfect for mould. Also, there can be danger of flooding. The shed or garage is also out for all these reasons. Avoid exterior, north and west facing walls or locations that receive direct heat and sunlight. For films with magnetic soundtracks, keep away from magnets such as those found in stereo speakers as well as heavy-duty electrical cables. Avoid any locations near chemicals, paint, or exhaust. chemical fumes, including those found in everyday air pollution, when combined with a high relative humidity can cause film to deteriorate and images to fade. We have found that the sound track on films deteriorates faster than the film itself. These tracks are far more fragile than film which in itself is far more robust but the natural deterioration of the film and the gasses and chemicals it gives off directly affect the magnetic sound track. Think of storing them in a hall cupboard or the bottom of your closet or a linen closet but not on the same shelf as towels etc which will exude some chemical fumes from washing powder, bleach etc. When you're ready, send your films to us via Registered Post (visit our website for more info) and we will transfer them to DVD so you can preserve your precious memories forever and watch them and share them with friends and family. http://www.relifeimagetransfer.com.au/more-in/how-to-order/ Peter Baile
