08.01.2022 Today we remember photographer Damien Parer who was born #onthisday in 1912. Having worked in the studio of Max Dupain before the war, in 1940 Parer became the ...first official Australian photographer and cinematographer appointed to the Department of Information (DOI) in the Second World War. First working in the Middle East, Greece and Syria, he filmed some of his best-known sequences whilst in New Guinea in 1942, which were used in the Academy Award-winning Kokoda Front Line (1942). Disagreement and interference prompted Parer’s resignation from the DOI in late 1943, the photographer then taking up work with America’s Paramount News, covering U.S. operations. His desire to get close to the action throughout his career meant putting his own life at risk. Parer was killed by Japanese machine gun fire in an attempt to capture the faces of marines advancing during the Peleliu operation in 1944. He remains one of the most important and popular war photographers represented in the collection of the Australian War Memorial. Parer is photographed here, tripod resting over his shoulder, admiring the work of official war artist Julian R. Ashton in Port Moresby. Although the background is overexposed, the date the photograph was taken and both men’s attire indicate that it is the country’s dry season. The horse in the background also provides a point of intrigue. Image: Unknown photographer, not titled, 30 July 1942, black and white negative, 012933, #myAWM #AWMemorial

It featured Queanbeyan's William Farrer, whose revolutionary wheat strains ess...entially saved Australia from financial ruin at the turn of the 20th century. This one though, differs slightly from versions after 1974 - any ideas why? See more
