25.01.2022 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Written by Aimee Quigg, Remedial Massage Therapist The carpal tunnel is a pathway through the wrist that arteries, veins, tendons and nerves pass through to reach the hand. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes impinged in this pathway. It can become impinged for a myriad of reasons: inflammation and swelling, repetitive movements, arthritis (usually rheumatoid). The common symptoms that occur due to this impingement are: numbn...ess of the hand/wrist/forearm, tingling (pins and needles) through the lower limb and hand, and a sharp, shooting, or stabbing pain through the area. One of the main forms of treatment for this condition is, you guessed it, REST; particularly when it is caused from repetitive movements. Remedial massage can help in all stages, particularly the early stages, of this condition. By releasing the muscles through the arm and forearm and reducing the inflammation and swelling around the wrist, we release the pressure placed on the tendons and nerves therefore alleviating the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Each case of carpal tunnel syndrome is different, and as such, we treat each one with the utmost level of concern and compassion. No condition or treatment plan is ‘one size fits all’ as every individual will respond differently to the symptoms and treatments. Mild to moderate cases typically resolve within 2-3 months of treatment (when following the treatment plan). Occasionally, a severe case can arise which is when your GP may recommend a surgical option. If you have been suffering from wrist pain, or if reading this has given you a ‘lightbulb’ moment, feel free to book in with one of our qualified therapists! www.remedialmovement.com.au

23.01.2022 Lymphatic Drainage Massage (LDM) assists the body to eliminate toxins through natural methods. We are exposed to many toxins in our daily life. External toxins like pesticides, cleaning products and pollution and internal toxins that are within our nutrition intake, alcohols and medications. When these toxins take over, lymphatic fluid can build up within our tissues which can start the cycle of chronic fatigue, pain, mental imbalance, decreased vitality and the building blo...cks for chronic conditions to develop. Lymphatic drainage massage is a form of gentle massage that encourages the movement of lymph fluids around the body and helps remove waste and toxins. If you need to address certain toxins in your life, LDM might be just what you are looking for. www.remedialmovement.com.au
23.01.2022 RELEASING THE HIP AT HOME! By Aimee Quigg - Remedial Massage Therapist Two muscles in the hip region that can cause pain through the hip, lower back and down the legs are the Gluteus Medius and Gluteus Minimus.... These muscles are used for hip and leg abduction (bringing the leg and hip out to the side). To locate these muscles, push your fingers into the side of your buttocks at the top. While you are pushing here, lift your leg out to the side. You should feel the muscles contract under your fingers. Once you have located the muscles, locate a foam roller, trigger point ball or tennis ball. Lie on your side with the located muscles, press into the roller with your arms and legs supporting your weight. Roll the muscles along the roller and press deeper into tender points. Another muscle located in this area that causes pain through the lower back, hip, leg and knee is the Tensor Fascia Latae or TFL. This muscle is also to blame for tension through the abdomen and iliotibial band (ITB) which runs on the outside of the leg. It is easiest to release this muscles using a ball and a solid wall. First locate the hip bone at the front, then follow it up and around until you are poking the side of your hip. Drop down vertically approximately 5cm onto your hip. While pushing on this area, point your toes in and out, you should feel the muscle contracting. Once you have located the muscle, place the ball between that spot and the wall and push into it, while pointing your toes in and out. You can do this on the floor, however I personally find it easier to do it against a wall. If this hasn't released your muscles, book in with one of us to release it for you! 21.01.2022 ARE YOU READY FOR CHANGE?: THE EFFECTS MASSAGE CAN HAVE ON THE INTERNAL SYSTEMS/EMOTIONS: Written by Aimee Quigg Having chronic or a long term pain/injury is debilitating on both your physical and emotional wellbeing. A lot of people tend to accept that the pain will always be there and it quickly becomes a part of who they are. Once you start receiving treatments for the issue, you progress and with the progression, the pain shifts - this is common. It can shift to a differe...nt type of pain, or to a different area - and this can cause some upset within your nervous system and emotions. Learning to live with pain is difficult, and after some time - it just becomes part of your daily life. The hardest part is booking and going to that first session. After a few sessions, you wake up for the first time in years without feeling that twinge in your lower back - this can be very scary. You spend the rest of the day moving around cautiously, just worrying and waiting for the pain to return. A few days later, you start to feel pain in the front of your hip; this can make you feel frustrated: I just got rid of this back pain and now my hip hurts! Will I ever be pain free?! The pain shifting is a great sign! The body is starting to recognise the consistent treatments and the nervous system is switching on to heal itself. At this stage, we adjust the treatment plan and change up some of the exercises and stretches for you. During the first session of this new plan, you are angry and frustrated at this new pain, and this limits your progress for that session. You are holding onto a lot of heavy emotions that are causing your body to react defensively. We work gently through this session, to give your body a bit of time out. Along comes the next session - you have come to terms with the new pain and we have seen amazing progress! The pain in the hip is dull now, and is starting to shift into your shoulders. And so the progression and treatments continue, until you are pain free with no more dysfunction! The way we interpret and cope with our emotions and pain, drive the patterns created by the brain. Our level of fear of pain can influence how our brain learns to deal with it. Our brains a very plastic, meaning they respond eagerly to retraining, redirection and reframing. This can help break down problematic, and sometimes literally painful, mental patterns. We are here to support you along this journey. www.remedialmovement.com.au https://www.arthritis.org//emotional-/emotional-self-care/ the-emotion-pain-connection

20.01.2022 GET BETTER SLEEP WITH MASSAGE Written by Aimee Quigg If you havent been getting quality sleep, or even struggling to just get to sleep lately - it is completely understandable, considering what the world is going through right now. Sleep is... important for every function in your body - mental health, weight loss, stress reduction, pain relief, muscle repair, cognitive function. You name it, sleep is needed for it. All too often, sleep is the first area of our lives to be affected when we are stressed or anxious. If this is the case for you currently, there are a few things you can try to achieve better sleep: 1. GET A MASSAGE Massage has been proven to decrease depression and anxiety levels, as they trigger the brains release of serotonin (the calming chemical). Studies have also shown massage is an effective form of pain relief - we humans hold a lot of stress in our bodies, and this causes our muscles to seize up and cause movement restriction and pain. By getting regular massages, you can decrease the stress in your brain and in your body, overall helping you get to sleep that much faster and resting much easier. 2. MEDITATE BEFORE BED Even just 5 minutes of lying on your back in silence with your eyes closed can help. It is definitely hard to clear your mind when you are a beginner, so I recommend listening to some guided meditation. If you would prefer a meditation app, the HeadSpace and the Calm apps are brilliant! 3. GO FOR AN AFTER-DINNER WALK Going for a nice walk after dinner (in a safe, well lit area, with a companion) will help aid in the digestion of your final meal for the day and allow your body to rest a bit easier when you fall asleep. 4. DRINK SOME TEA Studies show chamomile is an effective calming herb, used for improving sleep quality and reducing symptoms of stress and anxiety. Brew yourself a cup and drink it just before bed. If you prefer something a little creamier, try my recipe for a Chamomile moon milk: 1/2 cup milk (plant or dairy, I use soy) 1/2 cup water Pour both into a small pot and bring to a simmer on the stove. Add 2 chamomile tea bags/2 tbsp chamomile flowers to the pot, mix in and simmer on low for 5-10 minutes. If you want it a bit sweeter, mix in a sweetener of your choice (I like to use honey). Let cool for 5 minutes, pour into a mug (discarding the tea bags/flowers) and drink. I personally do all of these suggestions - however getting a massage is most definitely the best one, in my opinion. www.remedialmovement.com.au
20.01.2022 MUSCLE CRAMPS Written by Aimee Quigg - Remedial Massage Therapist Muscle cramps are a sudden and involuntary contraction of one or more muscles, which tend to occur during long periods of exercise, physical labour and menstruation. Some medications and medical conditions can also cause cramps.... Most muscle cramps occur in the calves and legs. They can be caused by: - Inadequate blood supply: sudden narrowing of the arties that deliver blood to the legs - Nerve compression through the spine can cause cramps, for example pain through the legs. - Mineral depletion: to little potassium, calcium and magnesium in the body produces cramps. Most cramps are harmless, albeit painful, however if you experience any of the following alongside the cramps, you should see your GP: -Severe discomfort -Leg swelling, redness, skin changes -Muscle weakness -occurs frequently -are not associated with an obvious cause There are certain factors that increase your risk of getting cramps: -Getting older -Dehydration -Pregnancy -Certain medical conditions; diabetes, nerve/liver or thyroid disorders. If you have been experiencing cramps and have been cleared by a GP, regular massages have been shown to reduce muscle tension and cramps. 19.01.2022 Spring is in the airthe time for rebirth and growth. And we have been seeing this growth first hand in the clinic - with many of our younger clients having growth spurts! As we adults know: with growth spurts come growing painsand it isnt a fun time. Growing pains are typically aching and throbbing in the legs, but can also occur in the underarms, or cause abdominal pain and headaches (which are common in the afternoons and throughout the night), keeping the kids awake. T...his is due to the muscles being stretched to fit the growing bones. If your child is particularly active or plays a lot of sport, they may feel these growing pains more than average. Studies have shown that massage is an effective pain relief for kids experiencing these growing pains. Treatment for growing pains is typically a gentle session, incorporating slow and deep muscle compression, isolated, controlled movements of the affected areas, and delicate manipulation of the soft tissues. Children are quite sensitive to touch and therefore our sessions with them are always gentle - with the parents in the room, we are able to teach the parents how to help manage their childs pain in between sessions, at home. If your child is going through these pains - book them in for a gentle session with one of our practitioners! In health, Aimee Remedial Massage Therapist www.remedialmovement.com.au

18.01.2022 If you are suffering from lower back pain, it might be time to check out your core muscles. What our body is constantly aiming for is equilibrium. Striking that balance in order to keep us up right and our systems working in harmony. If we have muscle imbalance and weak areas this is when our alignment suffers and we start to develop muscle pain, discomfort and postural issues. There can be many factors in lower back pain, which is best assessed by your therapist, however ...a weak core can be a major player as strong abdominal muscles help align your spine. Strengthening your core is going to improve your balance, takes pressure off your joints and ligaments which improves range or motion and bone health and can even enhance your moods. It is important to make sure your form is correct and you do not have a twist within your thoracic area when holding this position as this can lead to further and more complex muscle dysfunctions. Start by holding the plank for short bursts of 30 seconds and increase as your strength improves. You can either be up on your hands or down on your elbows for a more intense hold. 17.01.2022 It's that time of year. Time to get the pen and paper out and start setting goals for the year ahead. But if you are going to set goals there are a few things you need to remember. One is, persistence. Persistence is the only way you are truly going to achieve what you are setting out to do. Yep, you may have to change and adapt your plan on how to get there from time to time but that's OK. It doesn't mean you chuck the towel in over the first hurdle. Simply get the pen an...d paper out again and re-write the course. The most important thing is you never lose sight of your end goal. Always listen to your body & intuition which will ensure you get where you want to go, happy & healthy. Believe, strive, achieve. www.remedialmovement.com.au

16.01.2022 ANKLE STABILITY By Aimee Quigg - Remedial Massage Therapist Ankle stability is one of the most important factors when it comes to balance and co-ordination.... Ankle instability is typically caused by laxity in the ligaments (overstretched due to injury, hyper-mobility, etc) and/or weak muscles in the area. A rolled ankle, or ankle sprain, is an extremely common injury and not just in athletes - but in general population as well (weve all had a big night out and rolled our ankle on a gutter, its okay). Most of the time, it isnt a severe injury and within a week or two, we are back to normal. But over time, the stability of the ligaments through our ankles wear away due to ageing, activity and constant mild ankle sprains that we thought nothing of at the time. Ankle instability can lead to many dysfunctions throughout the body, from overactive muscles pulling the knee and hip out of alignment - all the way up into your shoulder and neck struggling to cope with the imbalances through your lower body, and all of this can set off further dysfunctions themselves. If you have ankle instability, it is not the end of the world. Studies show through manual therapy (massage) and rehabilitation (proprioceptive and neuromuscular), and occasionally orthotics - ankle stability can be achieved. Balance training and strength training have shown to be extremely effective at restoring ankle stability - with surgical intervention required in only the most severe cases (following extreme injuries). Bookings are made easy online at: www.remedialmovement.com.au
16.01.2022 A big Happy Birthday to this guy! We hope you have a great day filled with many laughs and joy.
16.01.2022 If youre a human on this earth youve experienced a headache. Every one of us has had an achy cranium at least once in our life. Theyre unpleasant, uncomfortable and at times, down-right debilitating. There are many things that can trigger the onset of a headache such as dehydration, allergies, underlying illness, eye strain, or a big night on the turps. These types of headaches are attributable to a direct cause and often have a fool proof method of recovery. But what ab...out those headaches that seemingly arise from nowhere? Those ones that emerge without any rhyme or reason? The cause of these headaches may lie in the muscles of your neck and shoulders. A tension headache can be a particularly nasty form of headache and is often associated with tightness or restriction felt in the neck. These muscles can refer pain to all areas of the head including the temples, behind the eyes and around the back and base of the skull. Medication can offer temporary relief for tension headaches however without addressing the cause theyre destined to return as often as pesky in-laws. Your head is heavy, weighing anywhere between 5-10kg. The muscles in your neck are small in comparison and have their work cut out for them not only supporting the head but also facilitating all of the different movements our head can make. When you add some poor posture to the mix these muscles quickly become over worked and fatigued. In the long term we want to strengthen our necks and make them robust enough to handle the demands of daily life. In the short term however we want to give the muscles some TLC as a reward for all the hard work they do. There are some self treatment techniques that can help to alleviate tension headaches. The trouble with treating your own neck is that some areas can be rather sensitive and difficult to get stuck into while remaining relaxed. If you suffer from tension headaches my suggestion would be to book in for a remedial appointment with us so we can not only help you get relief from your current headache but also help you develop a plan to keep them gone for good! 14.01.2022 Have You Done Your Exercise This Week?? Written by Jacob Pollock - Clinical Myotherapist There’s overwhelming evidence that supports the fact that regular physical activity has a positive impact on almost every facet of your existence. From mental health to immune strength, heart health, sleep quality, bone and muscle strength... and so on. The list is virtually endless. While exercise for the sake of exercise can feel tedious and laborious, there’s almost as many options out... there for exercise as there are reasons to do so. The department of health recommends, AS A MINIMUM, adults should be getting 2.5 hours of moderate physical activity per week. For some perspective we’ll do some quick math... 24 hours/ x 7 days = 168 hours per week Assuming 8 hours a day you’re asleep, 8 hours you’re in the office, plus 2 hours travel time each day leaves a remaining... 62 hours per week to get some exercise in! Now these are rough figures, obviously, and I’m well aware not everyone actually has 42 hours spare each week, ESPECIALLY parents. The point I’m trying to make is that the amount of recommended exercise, in reality, is a tiny proportion of time. It also can’t be stressed enough that this is the BARE MINIMUM. The unfortunate thing is that exercise is often viewed as a chore and pushed so far down the list of priorities it doesn’t get a look in. Exercise should be an enjoyable experience, something to look forward to each day to let off some steam, outlet some stress and clear the mind. If you’re dreading your exercise it just means you haven’t found something you enjoy... YET! So then, what is considered moderate physical activity you may be asking? Well it’s pretty simple really. If you’re sweating and breathing heavily but are able to maintain a conversation, you’re doing it! The key word is MODERATE. We want that heart rate elevated but not to the point its beating out of our chest. Within a few weeks I promise you will notice a difference in yourself! www.remedialmovement.com.au
14.01.2022 NERVE IMPINGEMENTS - What Are They and Can They Be Fixed? Written by Aimee Quigg - Remedial Massage Therapist Nerve pain can be a debilitating experience and it can occur for a number of reasons. All too often, neuropathic pain arises through nerve entrapments. This condition can come about due to too much pressure on a nerve from the surrounding musculoskeletal structure of the area. The pressure on the nerve causes pain, tingling, numbness or weakness through the muscles th...at the trapped nerve innervates. Nerve entrapments can emerge anywhere in the body; the most common, however is in the lower back or neck due to a herniated disc, or otherwise called a slipped disc. Depending on the severity of nerve impingement and cause of the herniated disc, the condition can typically be treated two different ways: conservatively, through manual therapy and rehabilitation, or surgically. Ultimately, conservative treatment is the preferred first step, but always consult with your GP to discuss treatment options. Treating nerve impingements through manual therapy can combine techniques such as nerve flossing or gliding, which is essentially stretching through the nerve to help it move under the musculoskeletal structures more fluidly, a lot of deep tissue and trigger point work to hep release the tense muscles compressing the nerve/s and MFR (myofascial release) to help realign the body and distinguish any dysfunction that could be occurring as a result of the impingement. If you have been suffering from a nerve impingement or another neuropathic pain disorder/dysfunction and would like to know your options for conservative treatment and recovery, book a session with one of our qualified therapists today! www.remedialmovement.com.au
14.01.2022 KYPHOSIS Written by Jacob Pollock - Clinical Myotherapist To help explain and understand kyphosis, it’s important to understand it in an accurate anatomical context. ... The spine is comprised of 4 ‘regions’. Each of these regions is associated with a degree of curvature similar to an S shape. Some of the functions of the S shape in the spine are to absorb load, impact and support an erect posture. There are two main types of curvature. A lordotic curve bends towards the front of the body, where a kyphotic curve bends towards the back of the body. These curves are natural, however they can become exaggerated by poor posture, excessive weight and decreased muscular strength. Extreme angles in the spinal curves reduce the spine’s ability to spread load evenly through the vertebral column, exposing people to an increased risk of spinal injuries. Kyphosis specifically refers to an increased curvature through the thoracic spine. The arc (radius) of the curvature is measured by summing the angles of each of the vertebrae in the thoracic column. Years of poor, slumped posture with rounded shoulders and a poke neck are often a major contributing factor to this musculoskeletal condition. Kyphosis can contribute to all manner of pain in the upper body, neck and lower back. It can also have a significantly negative impact on your breathing mechanics by restricting your ability to completely fill the lungs. A combination of remedial massage and corrective exercise can considerably improve an exaggerated kyphotic curve by loosening the muscles of the chest and through the rib cage, while simultaneously strengthening the muscles of the mid and upper back. You can also use posture supports to help in the beginning stages of correcting this dysfunction. If this is something you have been struggling with, book an appointment today to help start the journey of healing. www.remedialmovement.com.au PH: 0466 556 706

13.01.2022 BURSITIS Written by Jacob Pollock - Clinical Myotherapist Bursitis is a common pathology we hear come through our doors at Remedial Movement, particularly in the hip and shoulder. ... I often find that this diagnosis has been given to our clients with little explanation as to the what, how and why of the pathology. Bursa are small fluid filled sacs that lie between muscles, tendons and bones throughout the body. Their main function is to reduce the amount of friction created by these other structures during movement and to a small extent assist in shock absorption within a joint. Bursitis is simply the inflammation of these fluid sacs. Once inflamed the bursas ability to reduce friction is compromised and instead of assisting the joints mobility, begins irritating the surrounding structures. Bursitis can be acute (rapid onset) as the result of an injury, overuse of the joint or in conjunction with other inflammatory conditions. Bursitis can also be chronic (slow build up over time) once again as a result of repetitive movements or global inflammation. In both instances, but in particular for chronic bursitis, it is vital that correct function is restored to the affected joint. Bursitis can be irritating and painful, but a great way to think about it is by comparing it to a mosquito bite. Both are instances of inflammation, both are irritating. 11.01.2022 We all have a rhythm to our waking and sleeping life. This pattern has been recorded and followed throughout the ages. It is most commonly known as the Circadian Rhythm and it is important for us to recognise when this rhythm is out of balance as it is good insight into our own health and wellness. ... Questions it can help answer are: Are you getting enough quality sleep? Do you have regular bowl motions and are they at similar times? When are you feeling most awake during the day? These are just but a few of the things we should be taking note of with our own health so we can achieve balance. Not only this but it can help your practitioners achieve the best treatment plan for you. Muscle tenderness can come from many aspects of your life and its not always just caused by injury or excessive exercise. Somethings that can cause imbalance on the musculoskeletal system are stress, digestive issues, circulation issues or even excessive fluid build up caused from hormonal imbalance. Knowing yourself and where you are out of balance can also help restore your internal environment. In health, Carly www.remedialmovement.com.au

09.01.2022 TREATMENT PLANS - WHY THEY WORK! By Aimee Quigg Imagine: You have had lower back pain for years - you are a carpenter, you take the lower back pain as just part of the job and have never thought that it could be helped. Until one day your friend gives you a gift certificate to Remedial Movement. You decide to go for it - it cant hurt, right? Right!... You have your treatment on the Friday afternoon after work - you feel great! No back pain! We recommend you return in a week, you say Dont worry about it, I feel awesome!. Until youre back on the tools on Monday and after a few days back at work, you start to feel the pain again. You call up Remedial Movement, asking if you can have another treatment. We book you in for the Friday, for your 2nd weekly appointment. The treatment goes well, no more pain, we give you some exercises and stretches, and recommend one more time, to return in a week. You book in then and there. After a month of weekly sessions, and completing the exercises and stretches, you are feeling amazing. No lower back pain in sight! But, now youre starting to get this ache in your shoulder. Ah, theyre probably not connected - you dont need to keep getting treatments right? Wrong! The dysfunction is shifting. A chronic issue will not disappear in 4 weeks - it will take some time for the dysfunction to dissipate. The fact that the pain is shifting is a great sign! We move your treatments to fortnightly and show you new exercises and stretches. After 4 sessions, the shoulder pain is gone, the back pain hasnt returned and you are feeling great! Your rehabilitation is complete - as long as you continue to keep strong and look after yourself. You now come back every 4-6 weeks for maintenance to help keep everything in check and in balance. Why not start the journey with us TODAY. www.remedialmovement.com.au

08.01.2022 NEW YEAR RE(AL)SOLUTIONS Written by Aimee Quigg - Remedial Massage Therapist Everyone has New Year’s resolutions. Whether it is fitness, finance or lifestyle related the same rule applies...take it slow. ... I know you’re excited and your motivation is at an all time high, (there is a reason why all gyms have sales in December and January it’s their biggest time of year for sign ups!) but change is a marathon, not a sprint. Change takes time, particularly the changing of habits. If your New Years goal is to get fit, please make it realistic. For example, your current goal may be: I will have a 6 pack by February. Unfortunately, this is a very unrealistic goal. It can happen...but not in 2 months. Instead of this goal, change it to: By February, I will be consistently training 3 times a week. This is achievable and with consistency, you will see great results! If you go all out straight away, you will: 1. Burn out: you will be sore all the time, extremely tired, and most likely get sick. 2. Obtain injuries you will have strains, sprains and tears. 3. Lose motivation by being sore, tired, sick and injured, you will not feel like training and see no progress. For long term success and healthy progress (particularly for beginners): start slow, learn as much as you can and stay realistic. If you make the mistake of signing up to a gym and training 6 times a week through all of January (when you haven’t done exercise since playing footy at 16), and you find yourself in pain and unable to tie your shoes, or walk up the stairs book in a session with one of our qualified practitioners. Having regular body treatments ensures that injuries stay at bay. Making this a regular routine alongside your exercise will make you train better and you will be able to achieve all of your new years resolutions with ease. Happy New Year! www.remedialmovement.com.au

07.01.2022 GUA SHA - The Ancient Chinese Technique for Muscular Pain and Toxin Release Written by Aimee Quigg If you have had a treatment with Aimee, you might have experienced a technique she uses called Gua Sha.... Also knowing as scraping or (in Western medicine) Graston therapy, Gua Sha is a centuries old technique used in conjunction with massage or acupuncture, just like cupping. Gua Sha is scraping over the skin applied with a Gua Sha tool, usually a flat stone or crystal, which are moulded into different shapes for each area of the body. The scraping acts as a hairbrush for the knots in the connective tissue covering the tight muscles; this deeply stretches the fascia around the muscles and improves blood and lymphatic circulation. Contrary to how it sounds, scraping is not painful. It is quite relaxing, and feels like a style of deep tissue massage. There can occasionally be light marks on the skin post-treatment, however this does not appear on everyone. The marks can look quite shocking (similar to cupping marks),however it is simply extra circulation and toxins being released. These marks will disappear within a few days after the treatment. To assist the body in clearing the toxins and marks, drink a good amount of water after the treatment and keep the areas warm and covered. Gua Sha helps to reduce pain, inflammation and tension, remove toxins and increase circulation. It also can stimulate the immune system, increase metabolic activity and (in Chinese Medicine) releases blockages within the Qi (chi) and circulatory system. Many beauty therapists also use gua sha in their facial treatments as it has also been traditionally used as a beauty regime to increase blood flow to the face which is believed to reduce wrinkles and promote a healthy glow. Aimee selectively uses Gua Sha in her treatments depending on how the clients body is responding to treatment and how the area feels, as not everyone responds to this technique. For some, the technique can work exceptionally well and assist in releasing particularly stubborn areas quite quickly. For others, gua sha is little more than a nice feeling. If you would like to try this technique, book in with Aimee and ask to give it a go! www.remedialmovement.com.au

05.01.2022 GET BETTER SLEEP WITH MASSAGE Written by Aimee Quigg If you haven’t been getting quality sleep, or even struggling to just get to sleep lately - it is completely understandable, considering what the world is going through right now. Sleep is... important for every function in your body - mental health, weight loss, stress reduction, pain relief, muscle repair, cognitive function. You name it, sleep is needed for it. All too often, sleep is the first area of our lives to be affected when we are stressed or anxious. If this is the case for you currently, there are a few things you can try to achieve better sleep: 1. GET A MASSAGE Massage has been proven to decrease depression and anxiety levels, as they trigger the brain’s release of serotonin (the calming chemical).
04.01.2022 Are you avoiding the foam roller because it hurts? Foam rolling can be uncomfortable! Especially if we are working at correcting a pattern that has been embedded for sometime. But its in your best interest to not avoid it! Here are a few ways you can help take the sting away:... 1. Foam roll after exercise - Your muscles will be warmed up and pliable so Trigger Points won't be as active. 2. Apply a warm wheat pack to the area you are wanting to roll first. 3. Keep the rolling sessions to short burst but do these a few times a day. The more you do it the easier it will be! 4. Mind over matter - Trigger Point pain can be intense and holding a point can feel wrong. However after you hold point for a short period of time you will notice that the pain will decrease and will make your surrounding connective tissue feel relieved and pain free. If you are mentally prepared and know that the pain will go down you will be stronger at tackling what you need to do. Remember, active Trigger Points can take up to a minute to release so take your time. You want to be sitting at around a 7/10 on the pain scale. 5. Breathe As your range of motion improves and pain decreases you might even start to enjoy the at home myofascial release and will soon be looking forward to your next foam rolling session! In health, Carly www.remedialmovement.com.au

03.01.2022 With our ever increasing sitting positions our posture is becoming more rounded and closed in the front of our bodies. This is having large impacts on our quality of breath entering the body which can lead to swallow breathing, anxiety, headaches, migraines and pelvis misalignment. Remedial and Myotherapy treatments can support the body in correcting this posture dysfunction and returning balance back to the body. Correcting long term dysfunctions need a bit of home work an...d deduction of self care. Ways that we can correct this is by incorporating the following stretches and band work at home: 1. Door frame stretches/pec smashes with a massage ball 2. Cobra pose 3. Thoracic rolling 4. Scapular retraction with a band Remember correct standing posture is: -Bring your weight primarily on the balls of your feet. -Keep your knees slightly bent. -Keep your feet about shoulder-width apart. -Let your arms hang naturally down the sides of the body. -Stand straight and tall with your shoulders pulled backward. -Tuck your stomach in. -Keep your head level-your earlobes should be in line with your shoulders and your chin tucked in. Do not push your head forward, backward, or to the side. To assist with the uncomfortable and painful symptoms of posture issues, book an appointment TODAY with one of our experienced practitioners. 01.01.2022 ARE YOU HYPER-MOBILE? By Aimee Quigg - Remedial Massage Therapist Have you always been the flexible friend or had a creepy party trick where you can pop your shoulder out? You may be hyper-mobile.... Hyper-mobility is where the joints of the body have more flexibility than the general population - some people call this double-jointed, not necessarily in every joint. If you are hyper-mobile and experiencing symptoms such as chronic joint pain, stiffness, muscle aches and persistent injuries to your joints - you may have Joint Hyper-Mobility Syndrome, which means you will require a strength training program to protect your joints and reduce the pain and stiffness through your body. Hyper-mobility can be genetic, however it can also be a learned dysfunction from sports such as gymnastics, yoga and dancing. You are more likely to be hypermobile if you are female, under the age of 30 and/or have Asian or African heritage (due to the differing structures of collagen proteins in the joints) - but some people do not fit in any of these categories. Interesting fact: a feature of Downs Syndrome is hyper-mobility! Hyper-mobility can be a blessing - it can help with playing sports and musical instruments, but it can also put you more at risk of dislocations. To counteract this risk, keep your muscles strong through strength training and provide your supple joints with the stability they need (and dont pop your shoulder out at parties - no matter how fun it is to watch people freak out). Remedial Massage is a great way to ease the muscle tension that is often felt with this condition due to the muscles constantly working overtime. It will also help with alignment issues and inflammation in the body. If you suffer from this condition, why not book an appointment today to help assist in maintaining your symptoms. www.remedialmovement.com.au
