08.01.2022 It is no surprise than students with learning difficulties struggle with reading comprehension. Sadly, this task requires many cognitive skills that these students find challenging including visualisation of text, working memory, decoding, and so much more. But did you know that the type of text you choose for a student also impacts the level of comprehension difficulty they may experience - and we are not referring to levelled reading here. This is important to know if we w...ish to maintain a student's confidence in reading comprehension. For many students, narrative texts are easier to comprehend and remember than expository/informational text. This is often because story telling is a more familiar content type for them. In addition, when students start school, there is generally some prior introduction to what a story is having been read to at home or kinder, been to a library or seen stories on TV or devices. The brain can put this print form in context which is very important for learning and comprehension. The comprehension of expository text is more difficult. Exposition usually deals with less familiar content and involves more complex and varied structures. For example, compare and contrast, cause and effect, etc. There is a higher level of cognitive ability and brain maturity in order to be able to comprehend these sorts of texts. So keep this in mind next time you are assessing comprehension for a student with learning difficulties.
