10.01.2022 "Ausdance WA has been featured in a couple of national news articles this week. . . We are currently operating without core government funding, and the prospect of securing core operational funding in the current competitive environment is limited. Without the reinstatement of core funding from the state government, the future of Ausdance WA is in jeopardy. . . Since the cuts imposed in 2016, meticulous attention to financial management, coupled with the implementation of a n...umber of business innovations creating new efficiencies and improved access to our services, has ensured Ausdance WA has built sufficient reserves to operate throughout 2019. . . In responding to the challenges of recent years, the Ausdance WA Management Committee has identified that the way forward for the organisation is to reposition our programs and services to open opportunities for partnerships with industry and community service providers and diversify income streams. . . 07.01.2022 Food for thought for your Friday... "...Schleicher, who is widely regarded as one of the worlds leading educational thinkers, said: I would say, in the fourth industrial revolution, arts may become more important than maths. We talk about soft skills often as social and emotional skills, and hard skills as about science and maths, but it might be the opposite, he said, suggesting that science and maths may become softer in future when the need for them decreases due... to technology, and the hard skills will be your curiosity, your leadership, your persistence and your resilience. https://www.thestage.co.uk//arts-teaching-become-importa/

07.01.2022 Read. Consider. Act. Hope. "In the context of a vote buying budget, this is clear statement that arts and culture are not seen as ballot box issues. With the exception of the Contemporary Music fund, there is nothing that provides a meaningful boost for the sector based on a longer term vision. This illustrates the ongoing challenge facing us - how do we ensure arts and culture is on the agenda for the coming election and beyond" - Shelagh Magadza, Executive Directo...r of the Chamber of Arts and Culture WA (Artshub article: link attached). "One way we can work towards ensuring that arts and culture are on the agenda for the coming election is to ensure that all politicianssitting members and new candidatesget the message that Australians value the arts, that the arts contributes significantly to the economy and that artforms such as dance make a huge contribution to the mental and physical health and wellbeing of individuals and communities" - Gabrielle Sullivan, Ausdance WA Director, eNews, April 5th, 2019 "Australia is home to the worlds oldest living culture, and some of the best artists, arts organisations and arts leaders in the world. 98% of Australians engage with the arts and since the 2013 survey there is substantially increased recognition of their positive impact on our wellbeing and ability to develop new ideas" - 2019 Federal Election Policy Platform: WA Chamber of Arts & Culture (full statement attached). 05.01.2022 Australias national advocate for the dance sector, AUSDANCE NATIONAL, announces its closure ". . . Ausdance National regrettably announces it will be winding up the association. The impact of shrinking government funding for the organisation, has resulted in dwindling reserves and severely limited resources. . . . . . Ausdance National was one of the 65 arts organisations that lost its operational funding in 2016 following the raid on the Australia Council for the Arts by... then Arts Minister Senator Brandis. Known as the Black Friday cuts, Ausdance National responded by appointing a skills-based board in March 2017. The Board restructured the organisations operational model, rebranded and repositioned the association in collaboration with its national network, explored alternate revenue streams, continued to deliver key sector initiatives such as the Australian Dance Awards, National Dance Forums and Safe Dance Project IV, whilst persisting with national advocacy for dance and the performing arts sector in partnership with other peak bodies. . . . . . The dance sector in Australia has experienced significant disruption and change, in part due to shifts in funding and the lack of a comprehensive arts and cultural policy. Despite the best efforts of the Board, staff members and volunteers, regrettably Ausdance National will take its final bow at the 2019 National Dance Forum and commence the process of winding up. said, Professor Gene Moyle, Ausdance National President. . . 02.01.2022 2019 NOW! Festival: early-bird offer open! 1-5 May 2019 - Ufer Studios in Wedding, Berlin. An incredible mix of improvisation styles crammed into 5 days of workshops and performances. This years festival focuses on the themes of DOUBT. The world is riddled with doubt these days. The question of how to behave when seemingly incompatible choices arise plagues us. Choices seem innumerable and often overwhelming.... The group of performing artists will cut holes in the doubt, and illuminate the confidence/ intuition intersection with each performance, using voice, movement, language, ensemble and solo improvisation. Audiences will witness human beings encountering the unknown, as well as the deliberation and decision-making process in the crafting of a dramatic stage. With 15 diverse variety of workshops, the NOW! Festival remains unequaled. Topics include Action Theater, Laban, Contact Improvisation, Instant Composition, Poetry & Improvisation, New Dance, Imagination & Language, Human Voice and Stillness & Time and are open to anyone. https://www.nowfestival.net/

01.01.2022 Enjoy a final remnant thought, below. Its time to make new work, in new ways! Because our artistic work has grown beyond the capacity of the collective structure, we have decided to continue making dance as independent artists, moving forward. To read more on our response to current socio-cultural, personal and political changes, please read The Shift, 2020, on the website. Thank you for your support for dancers, artists, makers, thinkers, movers, musos: creatives of all kinds. May the New Year bring you hope, inspiration, vision and beauty.
