24.01.2022 Why are Australians stuck overseas during the coronavirus pandemic only now telling DFAT they want to come home?

24.01.2022 US hopeful of pre-Christmas COVID jab, Australia still has long wait Millions of vulnerable Americans could be vaccinated against coronavirus before the end of 2020 but it will be months into 2021 before anyone in Australia gets a shot.

24.01.2022 IMPORTANT information about additional Qantas flights that help more #StrandedAussies to get home.

22.01.2022 I know it’s not in Australia and I also know this might just confirm to some that hotel detention ‘the Australian way’ is the only way, but looking at how athletes generally have been given these kind of privileges here too and how there have been different rules for them, I do feel both some ‘told you so’ as well as some ‘WTAF’ reading this... The Ministry of Health revealed that several team members have been seen on CCTV at the facility breaching managed isolation rules, despite clear, consistent and detailed communication of expected behaviours while in the facility. In a statement, the Ministry said that the team as a whole has been issued with a final warning.

22.01.2022 Others have mentioned this as well, do take this into consideration when contemplating the move back to Australia. It’s not all roses at the moment. It isn’t anywhere in the world of course, but if you have your income and life sorted overseas, now may not be the time to move. Better but still bad: despite positive GDP figures Australia is not out of a recession... We need to stand back and look at the bigger picture, especially annual growth figures Wednesday’s GDP figures are likely to show that the economy grew in the September quarter but data on investment, profits and wages show that our economy remains bound up in the calamity of the pandemic recession. At such times, the worth of GDP as a measure of economic health becomes even more questionable than usual.

22.01.2022 From journalist Tom McGlynn: The BBC Travel Show on the BBC News and World News Channel are making a short film for the programme about people still separated by travel bans and I’m looking to speak to someone who is still in London and unable to return to highlight the situation of Australians and what its been like. Email is: [email protected]

21.01.2022 There are currently 30 Australians stranded in SF airport, abandoned by United Airlines. Last night the Sydney bound connecting flight from SF sat on the runway for 3 hours, before the plane was deemed unfit to fly. Instead of putting us on a new or existing flight we are being forced to fend for ourselves, either waiting until next year for an available seat or paying thousands of dollars extra for a business class United ticket or a ticket with a different airline. ... Sydney’s daily entry quota is cited as the reason United wont let us all jump on today’s flight to Syd, even though we have already been counted as arrivals on nov 27th. United / Australia aren’t budging. Today is our last shot. We were all comped last night at an airport hotel and if we don’t get on the flight to Sydney tonight we will be forced to fly back to our American homes (for those of us lucky to still have a home. If anyone knows anyone in Australia or at United who they think could help, or any advice they can give us at all, we’re all ears (we’re literally like Tom Hanks in that Terminal movie right now). Please help us get home!

20.01.2022 The rhetoric is infuriating, how can we ever move to a better solution that allows more #StrandedAussies to come home when our leaders keep using this kind of language? "What the test results overnight show [is] that international arrivals of Australians is clearly the biggest risk to the state," Mr McGowan said.

18.01.2022 Just FYI. "National Cabinet also agreed to prioritise the return of Australians from overseas, extending the international air passenger caps until 31 January 2020 for Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, with further increases to be made if and when additional quarantine places become available." 16.01.2022 With this ‘new style’ hotel detention being led by Corrections Commissioner Emma Cassar, I’d argue nobody can deny this system is just a 5 , extremely expensive, two week mandatory prison... outright revolting how they’ve designed this with it also being the most expensive in Australia at $3,500 per adult. Sorry for the strong language, but this just makes me fuming. Vic new-look hotel quarantine unveiled... The agency will be led by Corrections Commissioner Emma Cassar, who will report directly to Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville. There will be no private security guards involved in the program, with all staff employed or directly contracted by CQV, with the exception of cleaning staff, who are on fixed-term contracts with Alfred Health. About 300 Victoria Police officers and 220 Australian Defence Force personnel will be embedded in the hotels each day. "There are no private security engaged, it will be only Victoria Police performing those roles as well as ADF," Mr Andrews said.

15.01.2022 Travellers say NSW Health ignoring its own criteria for hotel quarantine exemptions Parents of children with complex needs, including a five-year-old who tried to jump out a hotel window, are among returning travellers accusing NSW Health of failing to grant exemptions to mandatory hotel quarantine when there are serious health concerns, in defiance of its guidelines.

14.01.2022 Authorities have also taken action in relation to the apparent leaking of COVID-19 from one of our medi-hotels.

14.01.2022 In case you had any doubt about the nature of hotel detention... Victoria's hotel quarantine system to resume under a new agency run by Corrections Commissioner Emma Cassar

12.01.2022 There's a lot of fear': At least 50 Australians are stranded in northern Ethiopia amid an escalating conflict The Australian government is facing growing calls to evacuate citizens and help negotiate an end to the conflict, with fears further escalation is imminent.

12.01.2022 There is too much ‘Australians first’ going on for my liking. I won’t like, share or comment on anything remotely nationalist, xenophobic or racist and will start to block. Here and on Twitter. This is exactly the same sentiment that doesn’t allow #strandedAussies to return. Also no Covidiots or anti vaxxers or I’ll block. I’ve been very forgiving, but it’s getting out of control.

11.01.2022 I know a few people who’ve been trialing this... (Too soon?) #StrandedAussies

11.01.2022 Facilitating the return of stranded Australians just doesn't seem to be a priority for Scott Morrison...

10.01.2022 Coronavirus: Let’s join push for all Aussies to come home Why? Because there are very few flights leaving India. There are very few places in quarantine. The process is a bit corrupt, favouring people with connections, or else the wealthy, over ordinary Australian citizens, who just want to come home.

10.01.2022 Australians stranded abroad struggle to get home amid the coronavirus pandemic Australians are "exposed to potentially unnecessary restrictions on their rights and freedoms," the head of the country's Human Rights Commission said.

07.01.2022 Tennis stars can practise in quarantine ahead of Open, ATP says A significant threat to the quality of international names competing at the Australian Open is closer to being avoided, after the ATP told players they would be able to practise during 14-day quarantine.

06.01.2022 Victoria opts for 'hot' hotels over home quarantine as it tests revamped program Australians returning home to Melbourne will be required to undergo a coronavirus test before they board their flight and confirmed COVID-19 cases will be corralled into "hot" hotels when international flights resume next month. Premier Daniel Andrews said Victorian government officials are undertaking a test run of the revamped hotel quarantine system to understand and mitigate the associated risks, as he ruled out a home-based isolation scheme for low-risk travellers

05.01.2022 That is clear then.., but it kind of was to us already. "Greg Hunt has clarified that foreign business people and actors will not be subjected to the Australians first approach to international arrivals as Australia struggles to clear a backlog of people seeking to come home. The health minister suggested that national interest exemptions would continue to apply, clarifying that investors will not be barred by the rule that prevents large numbers of international students coming ahead of 36,500 Australians still seeking to return."

01.01.2022 Expat Hubs Turn on Those They Once Courted From the U.S. to Singapore to Kuwait, governments are making life harder for skilled foreign workers Take a pandemic, combine it with a global recession and add a sprinkle of pent-up nationalism. For skilled foreign workers around the globe it’s an increasingly bitter cocktail.

01.01.2022 Same experience when flying in from overseas, yet we’re seen as the ‘greatest risk’. Flying from Melbourne to Sydney for the first time, the coronavirus-related anxiety is all too real

01.01.2022 Now this is off to a great start... Hotel quarantine inquiry lawyers blast DHHS for delays, changing evidence Lawyers leading Victoria's hotel quarantine inquiry have accused the Department of Health and Human Services of failing to reveal the true levels of disharmony within its ranks, misrepresenting the public health unit's role in the botched program and delaying the inquiry's final report.
