25.01.2022 Herb of the month - January STEVIA Natural Sugar Substitute Stevia is a genus of about 240 species of herbs and shrubs in the sunflower family and is native to South America. The species Stevia rebaudiana is widely grown for its sweet leaves. It has been widely used as a sweetener in Japan. Japan currently consumes more stevia than any other country with stevia accounting for 40% of the sweetener market.... Stevia is an easy to grow, herbaceous perennial with very sweet foliage and delicate white flowers. Use the leaves fresh or dry and grind into a powder then use in all forms of cooking. It is heat and food acid stable so it is good for sauces, desserts and baking. It may take a lot of trialing to get the quantities right. It has no calories and is safe for diabetics. Stevia partners with all the sweet herbs like mint, lime verbena, lemon balm and cooking fruit and vegetables like rhubarb. Use in normal tea, coffee, herbal teas, jellies, cool drinks and any other food that is eaten with sugar.

13.01.2022 Did you know Tomatoes are actually a fruit not a vegetable. But wait, the facts dont end there! Tomatoes are loaded with all kinds of health benefits for the body. One of the most well known tomato eating benefit is its lycopene content which is a vital anti-oxidant that helps in the fight against cancerous cell formation, health complications and diseases. No other fruit or vegetable contains the high concentration of lycopene that tomatoes do. Also, when tomatoes are heat processed, the lycopene availability actually increases.

11.01.2022 Lavandula x intermedia Riverina Alan PBR Riverina Alan is a typical English style lavender with large lavender flowers over summer. It is similar to other Lavandins but has much larger flowers that produce several times more oil per flower. It is also tolerant of moderate frosts and like most lavenders prefers full sun and a well drained soil. It will grow to about 1.0m tall and 1.0m wide, feed regularly during summer and autumn with Seasol and PowerFeed. Will make a good formal hedge when clipped or an informal hedge if lightly pruned after flowering. The flowers are large and hold well in the vase or can be dried and stripped for potpourri.

11.01.2022 The toothache plants leaves contain antiseptic action that can help clear bacteria and infections. Apparently, for people who suffer with thrush, candida, frequent viruses, fungal and auto-immune diseases, eating the leaves in salads or sandwiches, can be of real benefit. The flavour is tangy, but mixed in with other greens and vegetables it is hardly detectable.

07.01.2022 Mizuna, Japanese Mustard. A compact growing annual with attractive, dissected green leaves. Mizuna is a sweet and peppery salad vegetable that adds zest to the average green salad. Use leaves with green salads and with cold meats like prosciutto and ham. The older leaves can also be used in stir fries if added just prior to serving. The leaves can be harvested all year. The more they are harvested the better they produce and the longer the plant will live. Prefers moist but well drained soil in a part to full sun position. Regular applications of Seasol and Powerfeed will keep the plants healthy.
