24.01.2022 I love receiving emails like this! I initially spoke to my client’s mum who called the Vitality Junction shop very concerned about her daughter who was suffering from PMS each month. My client emailed me how she was feeling each month prior to our online consultation. ... Basically about 9 days out from my period, I start to feel sad, anxious, doubtful about everything in my life, it’s as if I can’t cope with life during this time! Things just seem to get on top of me and its tough being me or being around my partner around this time. She also mentioned suffering from anxiety and having a very stressful job. As my client was taking Tegretol (epilepsy medication) I had to be very careful about what herbs I recommended due to possible interactions. After one consultation and making the recommended diet and lifestyle changes, along with targeted herbs & supplements she felt like a different woman! I absolutely love working with stressed & hormonally imbalanced women in my clinic, why? They may be told that PMS is just something they have to live with each month without anyone looking at the picture holistically. This is what I do when I sit down with a client and formulate a treatment plan to help them. It always involves making dietary and lifestyle changes! These are the things that make a big difference to how you are feeling #hormonalbalance #PMSSupport #naturopathic
22.01.2022 I made this yummy smoothie bowl as a snack on the weekend, breakfast for the week sorted....it’s so good! Mango & hemp seed smoothie bowl topped with GoodMixfoods Blend 11 super nutritious goodness of chia, flax, pumpkin & sesame seeds, almonds, buckwheat, goji berries, cacao nibs, puffed amaranth & puffed mullet - I love adding this mix to smoothie bowls & chia puddings to increase the nutritional value. I am so sold on Blend 11! It’s such a great source of fibre - 9 ...grams per 50 grams! If you feel you aren’t getting enough fibre in your diet using blend 11 is a super easy and yummy way to increase your daily intake. The wide range of prebiotic fibre helps promote diversity in our gut flora. #guthealth #blend11 #naturopathic
19.01.2022 Need a little healthy food inspiration I love making chia puddings and trying different flavour combinations. This is a little choc cherry one and definitely one of my favourites! ... The smoothie recipe is 2 cups almond milk A big handful of frozen cherries 2 tablespoons cacoa powder 5 tablespoons chia seeds Leave overnight to work it’s chia seed magic Topped with almond spread for extra protein, raspberries and coconut. Cherries are a great source of fibre, Vitamin C & potassium. They are also rich in antioxidants and anti inflammatory compounds. And they taste so good! #healthyfoodinspiration #naturopath #chiapuddingrecipe
18.01.2022 Are you getting enough Vitamin D to support a healthy immune system? I have been trying to make the most of the beautiful sunny days lately, going for walks on the beach with my little man and sitting in the backyard with my cat to soak up the Vitamin D from the sun. ... Vitamin D is so important for a healthy immune system. It modulates the innate and adaptive immune responses. Deficiency in vitamin D is associated with increased autoimmunity as well as an increased susceptibility to infection. Research has also found a greater rate of autoimmune disease progression among people with Vitamin D deficiency. Spending less time in the sun over the winter months affects our Vitamin D levels. Low levels of Vitamin D have been clinically linked to respiratory tract infections. When looking at Vitamin D levels we want to look for optimal think 100 to 110 ng/ml. Over the years I have seen many clients levels sitting around 30-50ng/ml and recommend supplementation to increase those stores, especially during winter. It takes 3 months to increase Vitamin D levels. When supplementing with Vitamin D it’s important to take Vitamin K, as they work together. Vitamin D is used to absorb calcium, the Vitamin K is needed to make sure the calcium ends up in your bones, not your arteries. I recommend if supplementing to look for a Vit D & K combination. Leafy green veggies are a great source of Vitamin K, just add a little good quality oil to salads and grass fed butter to veggies to assist absorption of this fat soluble vitamin. It’s important to remember sunscreen blocks Vit D absorption and many Australians are deficient. We are so good at the old slip slip and slap! #vitaminddeficiency #immunesupport #immunemodulator
17.01.2022 I love experimenting with healthy salad ideas this one was a winner! This salad is made with harissa baked pumpkin, rocket, roast capsicum, hemp seeds, baked chickpeas with ras el hanout spice mix, topped with sweet and juicy raspberries I usually use pomegranate in this salad though thought I would try raspberries...OMG! the flavour combo of the sweet & spicy pumpkin and sweetness of the raspberries was sooo good!!! #naturopathicnutrition #healthysalads #healthyeats

16.01.2022 I made a big batch of juice today and popped 5 of these in the freezer. This way I am more likely to drink a juice each day as I sometimes get a little lazy at the thought of peeling and chopping every morning! The juice is my standard, hmmm think I may have to branch out a little and make different ones! Coconut water... Beetroot Frozen pineapple Lots of ginger Carrot Apple Cucumber Blitz in thermomix for 2 minutes, I then strain a little popping the juice through a sieve into a bowl. #dailyjuice #immuneboost #glowfromwithin
15.01.2022 Have you ever tried herbal medicine for stress? Herbs are pretty amazing at helping you feel less stressed, increasing GABA, your inhibitory neurotransmitter-resulting in you feeling calmer. Adaptogen herbs increase your resistance to stress. I find for me it takes the edge off, the stress is still there though I notice myself responding differently to it. I also like herbs on this list to help balance stress hormone cortisol, mood support, reduce inflammation & improve blo...od sugar control (impacted by stress) If you come to see me feeling stressed and overwhelmed there is a very good chance you will have Magnolia & Rehmannia in your herbal tonic. I so love both of them! Rehmannia was not on my radar at all when I was studying, it wasn’t until I was in clinic and used it for clients experiencing long term chronic stress and taking it myself! I discovered what a beautifully effective herb it is Taking liquid herbs may not always to everyone’s liking. In clinic I also utilise very effective practitioner formulas by Metagenics & Eagle in tablet form that support the stress response and help you feel calmer. Clients have often realised how well the herbs were working when they stopped them, looking back with hindsight and noticing how different they feel when the stress creeps back in. #stresssupport #herbalmedicine #herbsforstress #reneesimpsonnaturopath
14.01.2022 I’m SO loving grabbing my Local Crop fruit and veggie box from work at Vitality Junction Such a great idea! Love life being easy and healthy! ... The local produce is so fresh and yummy 2 oranges, 1 mandarin & 1 apple were gobbled up before I had a chance to take the photo! Now what to cook! #wholefoods #eatfresh #holistichealth
14.01.2022 My loves as a naturopath I thought I would share a little more about me and the work I do in my clinic space as it has definitely evolved since I first started practicing as a naturopath, seven years ago now! My about me blurb as below ... Hi I’m Renee, Naturopath and sole Mumma to a bundle of energy 9-year-old son. My passion in clinic is helping bring women back into balance be it from stress (adrenals) thyroid, menstrual cycle difficulties or as it often presents, a combination of them. I know only too well what it feels like to be incredibly overwhelmed, stressed and feeing like everything is out of balance. I also know what helps and love sharing this knowledge with my clients. I absolutely love working with women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and thyroid concerns (often Hashimotos) for two reasons; * They are not often diagnosed for years though they know something is out of balance in their body. * There is so much I can do as a naturopath to help women who are suffering with their health and not getting the answers they need. As a naturopath I am trained to find the underlying cause of your health concern and address that to help bring the body back in to balance and heal. My other passion is helping couples conceive working with natural fertility and supporting clients through IVF. I completed an amazing mentoring program with world renowned fertility Naturopath; Stacey Roberts and am very grateful to have this knowledge to use in my clinic. My training has included an advanced Diploma of Naturopathy, Bachelor of Human Health Science (Comp Med) and I am a trained teacher in natural fertility education. I love working with my clients to achieve their optimal health potential. I enjoy educating people about their health conditions enabling them to feel empowered to make changes to their diet, health and lifestyle so they can live their best life! #naturopathicmedicine #hormonalhealth #pcosawareness #thyroidhealth
14.01.2022 Yes I know, I’m talking about coffee again! My clients and referral clients (who have been warned) know only too well if they are coming to see me for hormonal imbalances I will ask them to take out coffee. Don’t think your daily coffee or 2 or 3 is having an impact on your hormones please take the time to read this article. ... The change we resist is often the change we need the most so love that! #naturopathic #happyhormones #naturopath
13.01.2022 A little mood boosting smoothie bowl The simple combination of frozen blueberries, macadamia nuts & coconut cream is a yummy one Blueberries are rich with anthocyanin, a flavonoid that gives the dark blue pigment of blueberries. Flavonoid rich food such as blueberries have been shown to have a measurable effect on positive mood. ... I add macadamia nuts for their protein and essential fatty acid content, supporting healthy brain function. The prebiotic fibre in macadamias acts as food for the microflora in your gut. This in turn helps support production of feel good neurotransmitter serotonin (approx 80% is produced in the gut) Not forgetting they taste so good #smoothiebowl #moodfood #naturopathic
13.01.2022 Green juice is always my favourite Such a good way to start the day ... This juice is baby spinach, cucumber, celery, apple, lime, kiwi fruit & coconut water & ice blitzed for 2 mins then strained. #greenjuice #greengoodness #naturopathic
12.01.2022 I love having access to the amazing herbal dispensary at Vitality Junction I feel grateful to be working here now and for the friendships and growth over the years It’s hard to believe I have been in this space, both in clinic and in the shop for almost 7 years. My longest job EVER!!!... I’m excited to start seeing clients face to face again, following strict guidelines. I have really missed it! #grateful #herbalmedicine #naturesgifts #vitalityjunction
12.01.2022 Good morning It’s been way too long in between posts! This yummy breakfast is an easy gluten free option I often recommend to clients. It was one of my earlier posts from Instagram that I have changed slightly with the addition of yummy pomegranate I see a lot of women in my clinic with elevated thyroid antibodies and Hashimotos. Gluten increases circulating thyroid antibodies and it is imperative to remove it completely from the diet along with the evidence bas...ed approach of supplements selenium and inositol to reduce the antibodies. Finding and addressing the underlying cause of the elevated antibodies/ autoimmune disease is the next step in healing the body. Starting to go gluten free can often be overwhelming for clients as they may be having gluten with each meal and it’s a way they have always eaten. They may not be sure where to start making changes and what to eat. Pre packaged gluten free foods are often very high in sugar and I recommend they are avoided. This breakfast is a quinoa & buckwheat porridge with stewed apples, 2 tablespoons of hemp seeds, coconut milk, topped with pumpkin seeds & pomegranate I soak 1/2 cup both raw buckwheat and quinoa overnight, rinse well then add to saucepan with 1 1/4 cups water bring to boil, reduce temperature to simmer cover pan and cook for 10 minutes. #glutenfree #thyroidhealth #naturopath
12.01.2022 I have been thinking of new mums during this time and feeling for them. Postnatal depression can be incredibly debilitating. I felt like I shut down, the thought of raising a child on my own absolutely terrified me. I was hit by postnatal depression after experiencing pregnancy on my own and a very traumatic birth, resulting in an emergency caesarean and my little man not initially breathing when he came into the world. Being a posterior baby, he was quite happy in there an...Continue reading
12.01.2022 I woke up to this review and it made my day I love that I can help women who are struggling with their menstrual cycles. This client is a beautiful soul who understands what is going on in her body and is proactive in improving her health. She has been working with myself and my colleague the very talented acupuncturist; Tracy Dundon. 11.01.2022 Lots of hemp seeds in salads Have I mentioned how much I love hemp seeds, probably quite a few times! They are a super nutritious and tasty especially in salads! This yummy salad was ... Roast capsicum Roast sweet potato Chilli haluomi Baby rocket Power beets from @gagasforguthealth (so good! & good for your gut!) Lots of hemp seeds A squeeze of lemon and macadamia oil The cultured beetroot added a yummy tang to the sweetness of the capsicum and sweet potato. #hempseeds #nutrition #wholefoods
10.01.2022 If you have anxiety and are drinking coffee and tea, taking them out can make a big difference to how you feel. Believe me I know! I have been coffee free for 6 months now caffeinated tea free for 2 months and now totally caffeine free!!!! I’m feeling so much better taking caffeine and sugar out, more on the sugar soon! I had an interesting experience about a month ago, after being caffeine free from coffee and tea. I was feeling extremely anxious and couldn’t seem to sh...ift it. I could not understand why I was feeling this way and it was overwhelming. I was at work and ended up taking 4 saffron capsules (one of my favorite herbs) and 4 lavendula calm, a beautiful formula with herbs Kava, Withania and Lavender that can be helpful for anxiety. I also took some magnesium powder to help me feel calm. It did not dawn on me until lunch time I had added 2 tablespoons of raw cacao powder to my smoothie that morning. Ah ha mystery solved!!! The caffeine in the cacao was way too much for me having stopped drinking coffee and tea. I just do not do well with caffeine; my body seems to have trouble processing it. I will not be making that mistake again! Relying on an early morning coffee to get you going for the day is very common. The thought of taking coffee out fills you with a sense of dread Also very common! I often say to my clients these daysyou are not going to like me very much when I chat to them about the changes, I would like them to make. If they are presenting with anxiety, the coffee has got to go! I am hard line these days with clients, I know how much better they will feel taking it out Caffeine withdrawal symptoms will be experienced and you will feel worse before you feel better....I know that’s not always fun to here! The bottom line is you will feel so much better post withdrawal There are many underlying factors that can contribute to anxiety. In this post I’m mentioning a few. Deficiencies in essential nutrients for optimal brain function; B Vitamins, essential fatty acids, zinc, magnesium, iron and probiotics, to name a few. Stress and overwhelm - yep I know that one well! A nutrient deficient diet lacking the adequate building blocks of protein, good fats, and complex carbohydrates to ensure optimal brain function? A diet high in sugar & refined carbohydrates Poor gut health Food intolerances, gluten can be underlying cause of anxiety. If you feel you need help with your health. I am available for naturopathic appointments in person and online there is no excuse really! Time to make some changes? #naturopathic #anxiety #caffeinefree
10.01.2022 It’s so exciting to have a crystal clear vision of my naturopathy practice moving into this New Year I have decided to stop seeing clients for fertility. My main focus in clinic is helping women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and hormonal imbalances (more on that later ) I have learnt from the fertility work I have done over the years that I absolutely love helping women with PCOS. I have completed additional studies in the area and maybe, just maybe I am a little obsess...ed with learning all I can about PCOS! 1 in 5 women in many countries will have PCOS; it is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. In my clinic over the past year I saw the most PCOS clients I have seen during my 7.5 years in practice. Why my love of PCOS. there is so much I can do as a specialist naturopath to help clients if they are ready to make changes. I understand how frustrating the affects of PCOS can be for women such as acne, irregular cycles, impaired ovulation, weight gain, fertility challenges, male pattern hair growth, hair loss, depression and anxiety. I work to support the emotional aspect of PCOS as well as the physiological. I use an evidence based approach for PCOS with nutrition, supplements, and herbal medicine and lifestyle changes. PCOS can look different for many women. Due to this they are often not getting the answers they need, having the appropriate testing done or getting the best advice, if I am completely honest. I recently had a client with a very high fasting insulin level, the advice given to her was to just go and lose weight. Yes losing weight does help, what was not advised is that if insulin is elevated it is harder for the body to lose weight and cravings for sugar and refined carbohydrates are super intense. It was an incredibly disheartening experience for her as she wants to lose weight though feels she is battling her body. There are many underlying driving factors for PCOS, my job as a naturopath in this field is to determine what they are and address them to help my clients. Treatment of PCOS is often the long game, there is no magic bullet. I advise my clients it takes time, consistency and effort to get results. #pcosnaturopath #pcosawareness #PCOS

09.01.2022 Many women are suffering from hypothyroidism or subclinical hypothyroidism and are often not aware of it. It has frustrated me over the years how many women I have seen with undiagnosed hypothyroidism, however it has also driven me to help them. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is a pituitary hormone, its job is to tell the thyroid to make thyroid hormones (T4&T3) It works on a feedback loop, if thyroid hormone output is low, TSH is released from pituitary to stimulate the r...elease of thyroid hormones. If the thyroid isn’t responding more TSH is released from the brain. TSH levels will keep increasing with this feedback loop if the output of thyroid hormones are low. Just testing TSH dose not give an accurate indication of how your thyroid is functioning. Many women can have TSH ’within range and still have elevated thyroid antibodies thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and thyroglobulin (TgAb) Elevated thyroid antibodies = autoimmune disease. They can also have sub optimal levels of thyroid hormones ( T4& T3) Looking at your thyroid hormone levels makes sense. More T4 (inactive thyroid hormone) is produced by the body than T3 (active thyroid hormone) T4 must be converted to T3 before the body can use it. The conversion of T4 to T3 takes place mainly in the liver, it can also occur in the cells of the gut, heart, nerves and muscle. This process requires both selenium and zinc, if there is a deficiency if either mineral this can impede conversion. Poor liver and gut health can also impact conversion. Hypothyroid symptoms can come from poor conversion from T4-T3. Reverse T3 is produced by the body during times of stress; it’s the body’s way of putting the brakes on to conserve energy. Trauma, low calorie diet, inflammation, toxins, infections, liver & kidney dysfunction also increase the conversion of T4 to RT3. High levels of RT3 low levels of T3 = hypothyroid symptoms. Deficiencies in iron, iodine, tyrosine, selenium, zinc, B2, B3, B6 Vit D, E & C impact thyroid hormone production. In my clinic I routinely request pathology testing for TSH, T4, T3, thyroid antibodies and reverse T3 to get the complete picture of how the thyroid is functioning, determine the root cause of the imbalance and treat accordingly. #thyroidhealth #naturopathic #thyroid
08.01.2022 Friday morning’s sunrise I love this peaceful time of the day to go for a walk Just being near the water is incredibly healing for me, not to mention being in it! ... I often ask clients; If they allow themselves to stop or are they always on the go? Do they get any time to themselves? Are they always in doing energy rather than just being? Being constantly on the go and finding it hard to stop and relax is a sign you are running around in the fight or flight part of your nervous system (sympathetic) You can often feel stressed & overwhelmed, relying on stimulants to get you through the day. I understand this well and recognise it in my clients! Allowing yourself to slow down and relax by reading, having a bath, yoga, going for a walk, having a massage, acupuncture, a healing session and meditation take you into the rest and digest part of your nervous system (parasympathetic) I have learnt over the years it’s the lifestyle factors that have the biggest impact for me when it comes to managing stress. The power of a relaxing Epsom salt bath with beautiful, relaxing oils should not be under estimated! Don’t feel like you have the time....make it a priority your body and mind will be happier for it #selfcare #stresssupport #naturopath
