24.01.2022 Egypt: From 6 to 800 new churches per year. German missiologist Wolfgang Simson reports an explosive increase in house churches in Egypt over the past 25 years. In the early 1990s we helped train empirical researchers to take a thorough look at the missions and church scene in Egypt, Simson writes. We found out that in about 200 years of evangelical missions work, since around the year 1800, about 1,260 churches had been established all over the country. That is actually q...uite a slow development around six new churches per year. Through the visionary introduction of a more strategic dimension and the planting of house churches, from 1996 until today, more than 20,000 new house churches have been planted that is about 800 new churches per year, a sharp, almost explosive increase! And many house-based initiatives have by now spread from Egypt into neighbouring countries. 05.01.2022 India: The miracle of the house church movement. In India we have seen a miracle in our lifetime, reports German missiologist Wolfgang Simson. A nation-wide movement of house churches. Mahatma Gandhi used to say about the church: ‘I like your Christ, not your Christians!’ Many millions of Indians are in a similar spot they are hugely attracted to Jesus, but appalled by Western Christianity. This is why it was a game changing, pivotal moment, 25 years ago, when Church ...1, the classical imported, colonial church system known there (church building, pastor driven, very patriarchal) was complemented by Church 2, a far more indigenous, house based church planting initiative. Many women, especially the illiterate ones, were launched into amazing fruitfulness. This strategic work has seen many networks increase in hundreds, thousands and, in some cases, even tens of thousands of house churches! This has become a nationwide movement that is by now, number-wise, actually larger than all the Lutheran churches in the entire world combined. Our friend Dr. Victor Choudhrie just wrote today from India that he has seen more Church Planting Movements during Covid than ever before! A key in this is to ‘listen prophetically and act apostolically,’ visionary and catalytic, Simson explains. You could also call it ‘cybernetic,’ proper steering the church on the correct track for it‘s divine destination. This is a vital role: to discern which exit is most purposeful toward God's great goals of making disciples of the nations.
