05.01.2022 Wednesday was a very very sad day for me. My much loved mate Max had age catchup with him and with him being in pain, it was kinder to let him go in peace. He had a very longlife for a Wolfhound/Lab cross. He has been in Qld with my parents for many years as they have a yard vs my unit, so I have not seen him very often. Last Christmas I swear he hugged me with his front legs and was jumping around like a puppy. By Feb when I saw him last he had gone downhill and I kind of k...new I was saying goodbye. If only I could have given him one more hug and a scratch under the chin and tell him what a good mate he was to me. I may be a tough tradie, but Wednesday I struggled to even speak about what we needed to do, and even writing this the tears are in my eyes as I think about Max. I have never spoken about it, but years ago when my ex left and my resulting depression basically killed my business, when the dark thoughts came it was knowing Max was waiting and depending on me at the warehouse that kept me going. He would put his head on my knee and just look up at me with those deep brown eyes, and patting him made me feel better. I say it all the time, if you can't love a dog that just wants to give you affection then you are not a person I want to be around. I will be making a donation to the RSPCA in honour of Max, so if you have had a dog you loved please consider a donation. Max was a gentle giant, kids always liked playing and rolling around with him and never a scratch or a nip. I fondly think of last Christmas having drinks on the verandah with my friends and Max getting pats from everyone. Max was a ladies dog, no woman could resist patting him. Sadly he never told me his secret. He was cared for by my parents and sister for the last few years and I thank them for giving him a good life. He was much loved by all of us, and he brought a bit of happiness into the life of everyone who met him and that's how I will remember him.
