16.01.2022 Suburb Review North Ward Kissing Point / Jazzine Barracks. The fortification at Kissing Point occupies part of a rocky headland separating Cleveland Bay and Rowes Bay at the northern end of The Strand in Townsville; while the Jezzine Barracks complex extends approximately ten hectares to its south-west. The former was built in 1891 as a two-gun battery and part of the coastal defence scheme being established to protect the colony of Queensland and its ports from naval bom...bardment, installations of which started at Fort Lytton (QHR 600248; 1880-82) in Brisbane and extended to Green Hill Fort on Thursday Island (1891-92). Both during and after the war the adjacent Barracks complex grew up over the large site where the battery's garrison buildings were located and where regular training and annual encampments of northern military forces had been conducted since 1889, most particularly those of the Kennedy Regiment formed in Townsville in 1886. https://heritage-register.ehp.qld.gov.au/placeDetail.html See more

11.01.2022 Suburb Review North Ward Tobruk Memorial Baths The Tobruk Memorial Baths in Townsville, Australia, is a complex of outdoor swimming pools operated by the Townsville City Council. It is located on The Strand, in the beachside suburb of North Ward. The Tobruk Memorial Baths features a 50 metre Olympic-size swimming pool, a 25 metre heated pool used for children's swimming, lessons and physiotherapy and a toddlers pool. There is an on-site kiosk. The facade is a vibrant blue...-and-white art deco design. Tobruk Memorial Baths was opened in 1950. The baths are significant as Australia’s most substantial public memorial to the Australians who fought and died during the Siege of Tobruk, a coastal town on the edge of the Libyan Desert, from 9 April to 13 December 1941. Because of the warmer climate, the Tobruk Memorial Baths were used as a training venue for the Australian swimming squad for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games and 1960 Rome Olympic Games. Team members include Australian swimming legends Dawn Fraser, Murray Rose and Lorraine Crapp. Six world records and 13 Australian records were set there in one night in 1956, with the footage featured on the first day of television broadcast in Melbourne. Training camps were also held prior to the Cardiff Commonwealth Games in 1958, and for the women's Olympic Team in 1964.

08.01.2022 Thinking of moving to Townsville? Townsville is the largest tropical city in Australia. Townsville offers more then 300 days of sunlight a year. We have three vast catchment areas that provide an ample supply of water year round.... It has a very relaxed pace, clean air and very little traffic. Townsville is a gateway to The West, yet boasts Magnetic Island and The Great Barrier Reef on its doorstep. It is surrounded by natural features, magnificent waterways and top fishing spots. Townsville is home to the largest big box retail complex in Australia. (i.e Harvey Norman / Rubelli Furniture / Bunnings and many others) It is the commerce hub for the region. Boasting a thriving economy driven by three separate factors: Huge resources and mining boom that is driven out of Townsville, largely due to its Port and major rail infrastructure. All sections of the military are based here with over 15,000 personnel locally. Combined with over 15,000 students at the James Cook University. Providing housing for this massive influx of people is driving unprecedented property growth. As a flow on effect tradespeople and contractors from all over Australia are coming to work in Townsville. Townsville is thriving because every segment of the economy is enjoying positive growth. Here is a common scenario: The person who works in the mines and resources sector flies back in to Town and buys a new audio visual package. That salesperson earns better money because of the increased trade and buys a new car. The person who sold the car then in turn has more liquid funds and often spends it locally perpetuating this prosperous cycle. This level of organic growth means Townsville is heavily under the microscope from investors and businesses. The local economy and population figures for the region give great confidence when evaluating a potential market. During the worst financial crisis the world has ever seen, Townsville property prices grew by 2.1% This is a great indicator that our own micro-economy draws its strength from diversity and is much more robust then many regions within Australia. Australia has weathered the financial storm quite well as a country, Townsville has had reduced growth but growth during these conditions is the best demonstration of fiscal stability. Townsville is not only a great place to do business, it offers a high quality of life. No traffic, beautiful sunny weather and a fantastic community filled with world class activities
