22.01.2022 Introucing Karl and Mel. After too long a spell of being a one-man-band at Rentachook (and suffering for it), the demand just doesn't permit me to go it alone any more. Karl O'Brien and Melanie Smart have joined Team Rentachook. Karl is doing deliveries and helping with everything else in the poultry enterprise, and Mel is our new partner in chook supply. The good news is that with Karl we are more able to respond to enquiries and have the chookline manned during school hou...rs 5 days a week now. Mel is a dedicated and passionate chicken breeder who breeds a number of pure breeds as well as raising the ISA Browns we sell with our coop packages. Watch this space for details of expansions to the Rentachook service and details of the purebreed hens that Mel is breeding as they approach point of lay and become available for sale.
22.01.2022 Yesterday I did an interview with Huffington Post Australia as part of their series on food wastage and it reminded me of a little study I did a few years ago into how much food waste I was feeding my hens. Did you know that hens are omnivorous? Yep, they'll eat anything. Pasta with sauce, meat, even what the canteen at Sydney Uni used to call (somewhat uninspiringly) "wet dish with rice". If you give them beef vindaloo, you'll get curried eggs the next day (just kidding).... Be brave, they go mad for cheese and bacon rind! Back to the study. Over a period of three months, I weighted the food waste that I fed the chooks and was astonished to find that it averaged between 10 to 15 Kg a week. That's bonkers! That's between 500 and 750Kg a year diverted from landfill! Granted, some of it could have been composted, and I have a few more hens than the average suburbanite, but it is still impressive! Tricks of the trade - feed them the scraps in the morning and make sure to collect any leftovers before night time (less risk of rats that way). Also, keep the scraps to the sort you'd (almost) be willing to eat yourself if you were ravenous. Nothing from the 'land-at-the-back-of-the-fridge'. Dave
21.01.2022 I saw the first pre-publication copy of the book, Backyard Chickens by the emerging author Dave Ingham yesterday. Wow, the culmination of a featherload of work. A 64,000 word manuscript, edited, photographed, laid out, captioned and now printed. And, it is beautiful! Far more beautiful than if I'd photographed it and laid it out. Publication date end of January 2017.
