16.01.2022 ON THIS DAY IN 1956 At Rent a Space, we care about the community, the events and the history that have shaped the people and places that we are honoured to serve. The torrential rain of the last few days is an ironic reminder of the wild and stormy weather that also occurred on 8th -10th February, exactly 64 years ago today, when Lansvale and the surrounding areas experienced what was described as the biggest storm in living memory. ... The powerful 1956 storm caused the area's most damaging floods since European settlement of the Georges River floodplain. Three hundred millimetres of rain tumbled down In the space of not quite 3 days - more than a third of the average annual rainfall for the whole year. Many of the seriously flooded areas were around the Georges River in the suburbs of Bankstown, Panania, East Hills, Milperra, Moorebank, Chipping Norton, Georges Hall, Canley Vale and Lansvale. Over 1000 homes were flooded as a result of the 1956 storm. In the aftermath of this weekend's storm and the reports of localised flooding today along the Hume Highway from Lansdowne to Warwick Farm, and flood warnings for some suburbs along the Georges River, we would like to reassure customers that they still are able to access to their storage units at Rent a Space Lansvale We extend our best wishes for the safety and well-being of our local community, and to all the other communities affected by the recent weather conditions. 07.01.2022 Celebrating all things "SPACE" Naturally, we're fascinated with everything to do with space, including outer space. So we can't help but celebrate 18th February, the day the (now dwarf) planet Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. Since its discovery, it has yet to complete a full orbit around the Sun due to the length of the Plutonian year. One day on Pluto lasts about 153 hours, while a whole trip around the Sun is completed in about 248 years.... In the 1990s, Pluto's status as a planet was questioned following the discovery of other celestial objects of similar size. After the discovery of Eris in 2005 and a year of debate, Pluto was demoted from a planet to a dwarf planet. We may not be astronomers, but we can take the mystery "outer space" and help you find the right size storage unit for your needs, including storing telescopes and other astronomical equipment. 02.01.2022 Celebrating our Community The local community around our Lansvale storage centre will be celebrating the Lunar New Year on Saturday 15th February, one of the most important festivals for many people of Asian heritage. Rent a Space wishes everyone good fortune and luck in all your endeavours during the Year of the Rat. The origins of the Lunar New Year festival are thousands of years old and are steeped in legends. One legend is that of Nian, a hideous beast with the head of a... lion and body of a bull believed to feast on human flesh on New Year’s day. Because Nian feared the colour red, loud noises, and fire, red paper decorations were pasted to doors, lanterns were burned all night, and firecrackers were lit to frighten the beast away. The Year of the Rat celebrations will see Canley Heights Community Centre come alive with music and kids activities, wonderful food, amusements, rides and music, including dragon and lion dancing, from 4pm to 10pm.
