18.01.2022 We had a great day on the Sydney Harbour yesterday in a 20 knots breeze. We beat the Melges 32 and Hick 30 around the course by 8 minutes! Hit 23.6 knots although low battery in the puck only shows 22.6 knots, which was probably our 10 second average.

15.01.2022 The REO boats enjoying some breeze at the nationals.

09.01.2022 After more than a year of sailing with the wrong measurements on our rating certificate we now have the correct figures and have seen a big drop in our rating. When I received the SMS rating for the REO 7.7 in July 2019 I was a bit disappointed as I expected it would be lower. Four years earlier I launched my REO 7.2 which was the prototype for my concept for a sportsboat and its rating was close to my expectations. After recently measuring a new mainsail for the REO 7.2 for ...Luke Ratcliff I decided to check the proportions of his sail with the measurement certificate for mine. The proportions should have been similar as the same ratios were used in the design of the REO 7.7 mainsail. What I found was that the measurements on my certificate were not even close. When my mainsail was remeasured we found out what had happened. The head measurement was not on the certificate at all. The 7/8th measurement had been used for the head, the three quarter used for 7/8th and the half width used for three quarter. From the top down the measurements were 220mm too big, 790mm too big and 740mm too big! The same mistake was made in the measurement of the mainsail of the other REO 7.7 sailing on Lake Macquarie and Bill, its owner will be getting his main remeasured also. When we remeasured the jib we found all of the cross measurements were within a few mm of the measurements on the original certificate. The enormous difference in all of the upper measurements on the mainsail has made a huge difference to our SMS rating. With the correct sail measurements the rating of the REO 7.7 has come down significantly. The SMS has gone from 0.841 to 0.811 and the AMS rating has gone from 0.962 to 0.923. In both these case the difference is more than 2 minutes per hour. In the national sportsboat fleet this could make the difference between finishing halfway down the fleet or winning a race! Over the last year or so, even with the bigger rating, we have still been competitive in the REO 7.7, but the new rating is extremely good and should make us very hard to beat in most conditions. This is what I found when I put the REO 7.2 in the water years ago and the reason why I developed the REO 7.7. The REO boats are a modern design with high form stability optimised for the SMS rule. While other sportsboats can be optimised to give them a more competitive rating they will not be able to match all of the features of the REO boats that give them their speed and low rating. In 12 knots and more we have been beating a Melges 32 in our local club racing. With our new SMS rating they will owe us more than 2.5 minutes per hour on AMS rating. We have applied for an IRC rating for the REO 7.7 which we expect to be around 1.040 when we get it in the New Year. We look forward to the ASBA nationals in February and other racing on rated handicap. See more

06.01.2022 You don't expect to see this in 12 knots!

05.01.2022 Design brief to self. Design a boat that is fast in 12 knots and more because we do not get much light air in summer. 12 to 16 knots on the Harbour yesterday. We beat the second boat in the Super 30 fleet home by 3 mins 44secs. Most of the other boats in our fleet are 30 feet or longer and we are just over 25 feet!

02.01.2022 ASBA Nationals 16 to 20 Feb Lake Macquarie here we come!
