24.01.2022 Preseason for Jr Rep footy is kicking off, plus summer Oztag and Touch are back on, so here’s a great conditioning drill you can incorporate into your training program to keep you fit for these sports. 10,20m shuttle drill which is a 60m effort. Aim to complete in between 12-15 sec, your recovery time is based on a 1:4 ratio, so if you complete the run in 12 sec rest 48 sec. Do 2 sets of 5 reps, rest 2 mins between sets, total distance run 600m. 08.01.2022 Understanding long term athlete development is the most important thing to know as a coach and unfortunately many do not comprehend what’s needed in this process. When Lachie first walked into my studio he had just turned 15 he was just under 6ft and weighed 78kg he had never lifted weights and once we started his deadlift was 50kg. He was also told he was too small to play rep footy. Fast forward to now 16 years old just 6ft 3, he’s put on 10kg and can now deadlift over 130k...g! And guess what, he still has plenty growing and maturing to do, maybe for another 6 years give or take. I’ve met both his brother and father they are big humans. The stage of development he is currently in is training to train, yet we have coaches out there wanting these kids to be at a professional level performing at their peak, and it’s all about win win. 04.01.2022 Speed work and conditioning are two totally different types of training and both use different energy systems. I often hear coaches, parents say I need my kid to be quicker, so when you go to the park give them a touch up or flogging. Ahhh no is my answer.. To improve speed, quickness requires a combination of strength training and specific sprint drills, which comprise of a certain number of reps, sets distance and recovery times. Also making sure you have proper running m...echanics to ensure you have these improvements. Like any type of training there needs to be a focus on these methods which can be done twice a week. Unfortunately this does not happen during most club training sessions, the focus is generally on the game it’s self then some type of conditioning drills.
