25.01.2022 It’s FACT OR FICTION FRIDAY! Thank you to everyone who participated in the last one. We’re asking our followers to weigh in on this one- fact or fiction, what do you think? What have you heard? Again, this one’s more for the general public or novice herpers....... Snakes can detect movement and light through the top of their head. We will reveal and discuss tomorrow!

17.01.2022 The Eastern Brown snake from Jerrawangala measured in at 205cm (6ft 9in). This video was the second time we measured the snake. It had a couple of kinks in the body this time around which resulted in the 203cm measurement seen.

11.01.2022 A large Eastern brown snake removed from a Jerrawangala property this morning. He was residing in an abandoned wombat burrow under the dwelling.

02.01.2022 SNAKES IN BACKYARDS With the weather warming up as we come into Spring we are going to see snakes becoming more active. Snakes will come out of brumation, a period of lower activity over the winter period. They’ll be basking in the sun and looking for a feed, and they’ll be searching for mates too. So what can we do to avoid them coming into our yards?... Short of constructing an impenetrable boundary around your property, there’s no way to completely ensure they won’t come in, but you can make your yard less attractive to them, less likely for them to set up a semi-permanent residence (snakes can have large home ranges with multiple niches where they may set up camp), less likely to enter your home, and give yourself the best opportunity to see them if they’re there. Some things to consider are: Keep your yard tidy- rubbish or items on the ground can create a good refuge for snakes. Keep your lawn trimmed Keep wood piles away from the house, and raised off the ground. Keep gardens neat and shrubs trimmed off the ground. Make sure animal food is stored well, and aviaries, chicken coops and other animal enclosures are cleaned regularly (as this will attract rodents which will attract snakes) Choose a compost bin with a good lid- they can attract rodents and also make toasty little abodes for snakes. Move animal water away from entryways to your home. Avoid keeping external doors open and install fly mesh on your windows. Ponds and water features are beautiful but can attract snakes. Snake and rodent mesh around the boundary or the chicken coop works well. Those solar powered snake repellents make for a great massage bed as the snake works on his tan. Remember that if you have a snake in your yard and you’re concerned, to remove any pets and children from the area and call your local snake catcher.

01.01.2022 It's that time of year again, the weather is warming up nicely and snakes are on the move. Right now a higher volume of people are coming into contact with sna...kes. This is due to working from home, or lack of work and are unsure of what to do as they normally wouldn't see them. Please feel free to share.
