19.01.2022 The Skyline Drive-in The Skyline Drive-in was opened on 21st December 1954. Although it was listed as in Preston, it was actually on the corner of Gremel Road and Plenty Road in Reservoir. Operated by Hoyts, it was the second drive-in to open in Melbourne following the Burwood Skyline Drive-in. The first film screened was Broken Arrow featuring James Stewart. The drive-in offered a barbecue steak in the restaurant, meals from the snack bar and the opportunity for the ‘kiddies...’ to ‘romp at the playground’. The drive-in was designed by Harold Bartlett from the firm A. C. Leith, Bartlett & Partners of St Kilda Road. The drive-in was built behind a quarry. The drive-in had competition in 1964 with the construction of the Olympic Twin drive-in in Murray Road Preston. In the late 1970’s Preston drive-in was equipped with Kinoton FP20 projectors. In 1982 the name changed to Preston Drive-in. It was closed in 1984 when Hoyts and Village merged and closed six drive-ins on the same night. The site is now the Stockland Latrobe Retirement Village.

12.01.2022 PRISON CINEMA: Coburg's historic Pentridge Prison site has been undergoing a transformation and all will soon be revealed -- with a 15-screen cinema complex, entertainment and dining venues, specialty stores, and public spaces. The redeveloped prison site -- that once housed bushranger Ned Kelly -- is set to open to the public in December this year. Palace Cinemas say it will have safety procedures in place at its new 1,100 seat complex to keep moviegoers protected from COVID-19, including checkerboard seating, staggered session times, contactless payment, and hand sanitiser stations.

11.01.2022 Like the Disneyland Castle, this one sits proudly overseeing and protecting the citizens of the former City of Northcote. Arent we fortunate that we dont need to refer to a book & lament the loss of 82 Dundas Street Thornbury. This is Thornburys last remaining, totally intact mega mansion of the Victorian era. There was much to celebrate when The Advocate reported on the 12th December 1929 the engagement of Mr & Mrs Davidsons eldest son Francis William to Marjorie Bryan...t of Bealiba Kensington. The excitement was short lived though as Franciss father Mr Davidson was a bookmaker who, having bet heavily against Phar Lap in the 1930 Melbourne Cup, was then forced to sell the house to pay his debts. I wonder if Francis got to marry Margorie at Barunah? Perched up high on the hilltop right on the Thornbury/Preston border, you can see it from almost everywhere. Actually when i was younger i could clearly see it from the corner of Darebin Rd & Wales Street in Northcote which is almost 1.5 km away. Barunah was built around 1892 for F.A Harris and it still contains the servants quarters, coach house and stables. Everyone know this amazing polarising icon of our area, what are your stories, whos been inside? See more

08.01.2022 I know some people have strong feelings about the State of Emergency legislation that passed the Upper House last night. Debate is healthy. Differing opinions a...re what our democracy is built on. But theres also been a lot of misinformation flying around so I just wanted to clarify a few things. Some people have asked whether extending the State of Emergency by six months means we also extend our current level of restrictions for that period. The answer is a clear no. Thats absolutely not the case. The State of Emergency is the legal framework that allows the Chief Health Officer to set directions to keep us all safe, and for those directions to be enforced. That includes the measures well need to safely reopen. Precautions such as requiring workplaces to have a COVIDSafe plan, mandatory isolation for positive cases, and wearing face coverings. The CHOs directions are based on the data and the health advice at any given time and our current restrictions will change when its safe to do so. But without the State of Emergency, everything becomes voluntary and we essentially just have to take our chances and hope for the best. People who are infectious could be out and about, with no way of ensuring they self-isolate. Workplaces couldnt be held to any sort of standard or required to keep employees safe. And wed risk throwing away everything weve worked so hard for. Others have questioned why we cant simply extend the legislation on a month-by-month basis sort of like a rolling lease. Well, the short answer is that it just isnt practical. The only reason we sought this extension is because Victorias current State of Emergency has a hard cap at six months. No other state has this limit in fact, most of their emergency laws can be extended indefinitely without parliamentary approval. Ours are the most conservative in the country even after this change. Weve already extended the State of Emergency six times, at four-week intervals, and weve reached the limit of the current law. Having to pass new legislation every month through Parliament could result in gaps days, even weeks with nothing in place to keep Victorians safe. To use the lease analogy, having a six-month extension gives our state the security we need to continue fighting this pandemic but means we can still give notice and move out at any time. If we dont need the emergency powers, we wont use them but theyre available so we can respond quickly if and when we do. During a pandemic, that speed is absolutely critical. Under the updated legislation, the Minister will still be able to review the State of Emergency at any time, and will only be able to renew it on the advice of the CHO and after consultation with the Emergency Management Commissioner as has been the case for the past six months. We all want this to be over. I get that. I do too. But this is about ensuring our health officials have the tools they need to get us to the other side of this pandemic and to ensure we preserve the hard-won gains of the past couple of months. We cannot afford a third wave. We just cant. But chucking everything aside now would almost certainly guarantee that. We have to stay the course and Im so grateful to every single one of you for sticking this out. I know its not easy. But it is necessary. And it will be worth it.

07.01.2022 Preston Proclamation Arch 1926 On 14 July 1926 Preston was proclaimed as a City and a special archway was erected at the southern entrance to the city on High Street, outside the Junction Hotel. This archway was part of the decorations and ‘both by day when it was be-flagged and by night lit up with coloured electric lights was well worthy of its place and a credit to the builders.’... The actual proclamation ceremony took place at Cramer Street Park and was attended by local dignitaries including the Mayor (Councillor Llewellyn Jones) and the State Governor (Lord Somers). ‘It was a memorable occasion on which it received official recognition of its elevation to the highest plane of civic aspiration that it is possible to attain.’
