24.01.2022 We turn to our community when there's a crisis and draw strength from those closest to us, but even with the bushfire, COVID-19 and flooding emergencies of the past year we're not taking action to be better prepared. Take a look at new research from Australian Red Cross on disaster preparedness and ask yourself, is your community ready? http://ow.ly/WVLW50BdbjP #getready #emergencies #prepared

Today, the NSW Government matched $1.5m from The Salvation Army Australia to double the number of pods that will help people stay on their properties while they rebuild and recover. #nswbushfires #recovery #resilience

19.01.2022 An important part of our work is to be prepared for any scenario. Today we took part in Exercise Piggyback, led by our colleagues at the NSW Department of Primary Industries. We collaborated with agencies across the sector for a drill to manage a potential outbreak of African Swine Fever. While there is no risk to human health, it would have an enormous impact on industry, people and communities. For more information visit: fal.cn/3bLGV

19.01.2022 It’s a full-time job getting back on your feet, says Sue from Verona. Sue and husband Gordon had just bought their property before the fires of New Year's Eve. At the Cobargo Relief Centre they were assigned a bushfire customer care specialist who: Liaised with Laing O’Rouke to organise a property clean-up Organised the refund of council rates ... Assisted them in applying for an Australian Red Cross emergency assistance grant and second Red Cross grant to help them rebuild Sue and Gordon said they've been grateful for the assistance. 12.01.2022 Elisabeth and Tom lived on their bush block in Dargan, near Lithgow, for 40-odd years, but lost almost everything to the Gospers Mountain bushfire three days before Christmas. We visited them in June to check out their recovery progress. It was with great sadness we later learned of Tom’s passing. Elisabeth is now rebuilding their new home alone, and with her permission, we share their story. For assistance rebuilding after last summer’s bushfires, phone Service NSW on 13 77 88 or visit https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/

COA stands for ‘connections, opportunities and activities’. #GetReadyAwards #DisasterRecovery #Preparedness

02.01.2022 Last year's 'unprecedented' fire season taught us a lot. Out of tragedy have emerged stories of community-led recovery that 'epitomise resilience', says Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons on stage today with the NSW Rural Fire Service and ABC Sydney. https://www.facebook.com/abcinsydney/videos/322555685638774

02.01.2022 From the archives - residents and volunteers armed with green branches battle a bushfire in the 1920s. We don’t know the full story behind this image which captures the community spirit of the time so well. The image is part of the Hood Collection from The State Library of New South Wales. Born in 1872, photographer Sam Hood did work for newspapers during the time he was running a photography business on Pitt St, Sydney. Years after Sam’s death in 1953 his family sold thousands of his photos to the State Library.

02.01.2022 This morning Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons presented members of our staff with their NSW Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citation in recognition of the role they played helping people through the past summer’s bushfire season. The citations were given to about 65,000 people around the state who contributed to the emergency response. For the work of colleagues across NSW Government, across local communities and from among our community partners, we say thank you.

01.01.2022 We introduced you to Running Stream couple Bev and Rick Anderson back in July and showed you around the temporary home they’ve made in a pod following bushfires last season. In the past week they took delivery of a second generator one of 400 we’ve helped distribute to bushfire-affected households thanks to GIVIT and the National Bushfire Recovery Agency. Knowing Rick and Bev, we’re pretty sure they’ll put this power to very good use. A shout out to our Recovery Support Service colleagues at Step by Step - Disaster Recovery Support Service for sharing this piece of good news.
