23.01.2022 In my career as a therapist I have often spent weeks and months with my clients supporting them while they work through some of the most stressful major life events, such as losing a loved one, financial crisis, losing their job, their their community and perhaps family for varying reasons. Over the last two weeks I have had so many conversations with people and families who have now experienced some or even all of these events at once. People are experiencing such significan...t changes to their life and they just cannot comprehend or make sense of where they are, compared to only a few weeks ago. I feel helpless to the questions I'm asked and although noone really expects me to answer, I feel I should try. How long will this last? When will life be normal again? The best advice I can provide right now is be kind to yourself. Kinder than normal. If you want to stay in bed, then stay in bed. If you need to cry, then cry. If you feel angry, then that is ok. Find a way to be angry safely and don't feel terrible about it. Life's major events don't usually come along this way and in multiples. None of us know which one to tackle first, so take your time and take one day as it comes. There are extra supports being put in place in SA to accommodate a 'wobble' in our communities general mental health and it is absolutely crucial that people reach out and access support. Most people I speak to - and this is the truth - just need a chat to offload, make sense of life and figure out where their head is at. Most people I talk with can, and do find creativity and positivity to energise them. If they can't, they can make a plan to care for themselves and their families accordingly. That's a fairly good start to a step in the right direction. Please don't be alone. Please don't think you are burdening anyone. It is all of our responsibilities to act now to care for ourselves so we can be stronger for our families, friends and loved ones. Early intervention and prevention is better than cure. See more
