25.01.2022 It's no secret. I love Mondays. It is one my favourite days of the week! It's the day I get to set up my week right. I have a few plates spinning at any one time - along with a bit of juggling on the side - who doesn't? I am just lucky enough, to be able to set aside this day to focus on personal and family admin so that the wheels don't fall off our week ahead. ... It's "Thank God it's Monday" day today. A day where you are encouraged to look at Mondays differently. As a fresh start, a new week, a new beginning. So why not find something to celebrate this Monday and bring a bit of fun and positivity to those you meet today? #mindsetmonday #mondaymotivation #ilovemondays

25.01.2022 Merry Christmas from the team at Resolve Estate Law! Our office is now closed for the Christmas break but we will be back ready to kick off 2021 from Tuesday 19 January! To all of our clients past and present - we have absolutely loved working with you. We know this time of year can be particularly difficult when you have a lost a loved one - so we hope that you are able to find small joys in this season and renewed hope for the New Year. ... After the curveball year that has come and gone, may you all have a blessed and restful Christmas!

25.01.2022 Do you have a bucket list? I came across one that I had written years ago... BC...before children - and I was (pleasantly) surprised to see that I had ticked a few things off that list DESPITE having two gorgeous humans that we can call our own. But there were a few more things on that list that I hadn't ticked off - despite knowing that life is way too short and time is not always on our side. ... It made me determined to find ways to weave those back in to our post kid life. So tell me - have you ever written a bucket list? If so what have you ticked off and what is still left to do? If not - what will you put on it? #mindsetmonday

22.01.2022 When things get cold - be someone's sunshine! It's not hard to do. It only costs you a bit of time and energy devoted to someone you know needs a lift. But it can lift spirits (theirs and yours) like nothing else. ... Whose life can you light up this week? #mindsetmonday

22.01.2022 We might work hard but we play hard too! Yesterday was the Resolve Estate Law Christmas party and boy did we have fun! It started with Concettina’s perfect Champagne sabre, and a 2 hour drawing class that challenged our inner perfectionists but had us producing frame worthy pieces! ... Then after a walk to lunch at our local 5 Burroughs it was off to an hour and a half long blissful massage at our favourite spot Royal Paradise Thai.

22.01.2022 "The living owe it to those who no longer can speak to tell their story for them." Czeslaw Milosz Remembrance Day is a day that we remember those who sacrificed their lives (by death or by lifelong injury to their bodies and their minds) so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today. Even though our own freedoms have been tested in this Covid year, nothing can compare to the sacrifices that were made by the generations that have come before us. ... We live in privilege because of what they fought for. Lest we forget.

21.01.2022 It takes courage to dig deep and find something you didn't think you had in you - in order to face the stuff life throws at you. Bravery comes in many forms, but usually it is a verb - an action word - because we are required to do something to be brave. It might be just one step into an unknown future, but it doesn't become bravery until you shift yourself from where you "are" to beyond yourself. ... No matter what you are facing today, or what is ahead for this week - know that you have (or your will be given) whatever you need to make it through. Be brave. Take the next step. #mindsetmonday

20.01.2022 When uncertainty IS the only certainty - it is really important to consider what we anchor into. Because being connected to something stable helps us to better weather the storms. My personal faith is an anchor for me. So are my family, my friends and the values that underpin who I am. Whenever curveballs come my way, I always press in to those things - and hold on. If you are feeling a bit tossed around or lost - stop for a moment and anchor yourself. You will face whateve...r comes at you this week a little stronger that way. #mindsetmonday

20.01.2022 A huge congratulations to Lucy Dickens on her amazing new book! I have devoured it in just a couple of days! It was lovely to see many of my friends and colleagues who are also doing amazing things in the legal profession mentioned in the book! And seeing Resolve Estate Law mentioned - on going the extra mile for clients - was the cherry on top for me!... If you are a lawyer looking to discover how to build a practice that makes a difference in law and in life - Lucy's book is a great place to start!! #doinglawdifferently

19.01.2022 It is International Widows Day today. As estates lawyers we walk adjacent to many who have lost the love of their life. From them we have learned that:... Grief has no time limit and the loss is felt forever. It is really hard to imagine a future when the future you hoped for has been lost. None of the platitudes that others speak provide comfort. It helps to keep talking about their loved one by name - it keeps their memory alive. Grief can't be fixed it can only be carried. Just because soneone carries it well doesn't mean that it's easy or that they have "moved on". You don't move on, you work out how to live on. Anniversary dates, birthdays, fathers days, mothers days, Valentines days and Christmases - pretty much ANY special days will be painful days. Loss rearranges everything. You don't move through stages of grief you bounce around between them - some days are worse than others. Time doesn't heal the hole in your heart you just work out how to cover the wound so others don't see it. Loss gets integrated - not overcome. Sending massive love to anyone who has lost the love of their life today. #internationalwidowsday

18.01.2022 Studies have shown that once we see something in a negative frame - it is harder to flip back to seeing even the same set of facts in a positive way. That is why it takes more effort to look for the upsides when things don't go to plan. And why finding hope and faith can be harder when things feel out of control. Fear can hold us back and paralyse our full potential if we let it. But life's too short for that. ... Now more than ever we need more faith - less fear. #mindsetmonday

18.01.2022 The last two days I have spent glued to my computer screen - but for my favourite reason - running training in Collaborative Practice for Wills and Estates! Yes - I would have preferred to be training in person in Perth and then holidaying there with my family - but that was not to be! So "zooming" in was the next best thing! Thanks to Clairs Keeley Lawyers for hosting my wonderful delegates! I can't wait to see another "seed" planted grow!

17.01.2022 One of the things I am most passionate about is helping families resolve conflicts over inheritance without going to court. One way to do that is to take a team based dispute resolution approach (called collaborative practice) where lawyers, a financial advisor and a communications coach help families facilitate agreements that take into account all of the important things - not just the law. This morning saw me up at 3am to join 28 other trainers around the world to attend... a "train the trainer" session - so that I can improve the trainings I run for other professionals in the estates context. It is so awesome to connect with others passionate to resolve conflict differently!

17.01.2022 As we begin to farewell our beach holiday we head back to a locked down Brisbane! Zigi always tells me to "breathe up and breathe down" when I get a little stressed. He made this video with me this afternoon to remind us all to stay calm! ... Tag someone you know who needs to hear this!

16.01.2022 Merry Christmas from the Harris family! After the year that has been it has been wonderful to be offline for a couple of days to pause, reflect and celebrate life and love. May the peace and hope that is promised to you at Christmas - lift your spirits and give you the strength to embrace all that is ahead for you in 2021!

16.01.2022 It is one thing to live life in a way that sucks the marrow out of each day - but quite another to live your life in a way that leaves your world a better place. That's easier said that done - when you have all the things that vie for your attention in any given day! But the key to a well lived life is how we spend our time - not on the urgent but on the important.... #mindsetmonday

16.01.2022 When we face the tough stuff in life - we are shaken. In the early days it is hard to see the good in any of it. But over time finding moments of beauty, experiencing joy, having our spirits lifted, discovering meaning - can be what gets us through the valley. ... It's as if in the shaking that a "sifting" happens. We discover what matters most to us and we hold fast to that. What is less important we let go. So - how's the "sifting" going for you? #MindsetMonday

16.01.2022 If the only certainty in life is uncertainty - then we can give ourselves permission not to have everything mapped out. And when circumstances beyond our control take us into uncertain territory - it's ok to slow the pace down to navigate the unfamiliar. One day at a time - one foot in front of the other. You don't have to have it all worked out. ... #mindsetmonday

16.01.2022 I seem to be having conversations with clients, colleagues and friends about looking forward, instead of looking back. Don't get me wrong - I acknowledge we can learn from our past - from the good stuff and the awful - but sometimes when we face tough circumstances it is best to look forward for the way through. Don't let what has happened to you define you. Be defined instead by how you respond, how you survive and how you make the best of it. ... One of my favourite tips to stay future focused is to imagine how it would feel to look back on the hard times having come through them with dignity. What do you do to keep yourself looking forward?

14.01.2022 They say time flies when you're having fun! And I am blessed to have loved most of my years in the law! So I really do wonder where on earth did 25 years go? I would never have made it this long without Craig by my side! After all these years I have found the confidence to use my voice. Some might think me a little crazy trying to shake up this traditional profession - but at this end of our career spectrum I was delighted to learn that many of us share the wish to leave it ...better than we found it. So here's to the Second Act! Bring it on!

13.01.2022 I love this line from the movie "A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood" based on the incredible life of Fred Rogers. If you haven't seen it yet - do yourself a favour an watch it. It is up their with my all time favourite movies! The full quote comes at the end of the movie - when Fred Rogers visits his interviewer's dying father at his bedside and senses that the family are finding it hard to talk about death and dying. He says: "You know, death is something many of us are un...comfortable speaking about. But to die is to be human. And anything human is mentionable. Anything mentionable is manageable....Anything mentionable is manageable." It is SO important to find the courage to talk about the things that we think are "unmentionable" - if we do we cope better. #mindsetmonday

11.01.2022 After the day time fun - the 'other halves' joined us for the best fun of all! The Story Bridge Climb! With perfect weather and a beautiful sunset we were on top of the world! ... But 1000 steps can work up a hunger so it was off to Alchemy for dinner overlooking the bridge before ending our night under it at the Howard Smith Wharves! Merry Christmas from us all!

11.01.2022 "If you haven't found it yet, keep looking" Steve Jobs Steve was of course referring to the hunt for a great relationship, but I use his quote in my book "Rest in Peace" when referring to the hunt for a will (or informal will) that might record someone's last wishes concerning their worldly possessions. ... As estate lawyers we always hope - for the sake of the families we serve - that there is an easily locatable, well drafted will. But when statistics tell us that over 52% die without making a will and when courts have in recent years recognised all kinds of weird and wonderful things as informal wills - there is a good chance it won't be simple or easy. This blog explains why the hunt should be done, and done well. For more information on where to look download our FREE ebook "I can't find a will, now what?" here - https://resolveestatelaw.com.au/resources/ or contact us to help you with your next steps if you can't find a will.

10.01.2022 If you want an insight into how someone who has lost their closest loved one feels - read this. It is a raw and real insight. Grief after death is as much a part of life as love is. The more we speak about it and acknowledge it as ok - the better we will become at supporting our nearest and dearest when it happens to them - and the more prepared we might be when it happens to us. Sending love to those who are facing this impossible loss.

10.01.2022 When was the last time you found time to get away from the "noise" of the world to find some head space for yourself? If you are feeling stressed at what life is throwing at you, or what is coming next - you need to make some space to try to find yourself some time out to renew your mind and to shift your perspective. No - I don't mean putting a podcast in your ear or scrolling your social media feed for the next inspirational Ted X talk - I mean spending time with your own ...thoughts. Finding time to sit quietly to pray, meditate or to journal out your ideas. To let what you know percolate and form intentions, to set your path anew. Just a few minutes every day can make a world of difference. Never underestimate the power of decisions made from a refreshed and calm perspective. #mindsetmonday

09.01.2022 When I first floated the idea of bringing the Collaborative Practice dispute resolution model to wills and estates I was paired up with power house Anne-Marie Rice to present a seminar to my succession law colleagues. We then co-presented the first ever wills and estates specific training in Australia. Then Anne-Marie was called to her current position! You can read about that below! As I am about to run Day 2 of my training to yet another round of amazing professionals - I couldn't be more proud of my dear friend.

09.01.2022 Finding your motive - your why - anchored in something that is bigger than you, or beyond your limits - will ignite an unquenchable spark within you. THAT "why" will help you keep going when things get tough and will have you walking on air when things begin to flow! If you are feeling low in motivation - hunt for your motive first. ... #mindsetmonday

07.01.2022 Choose kindness. #mondaymotivation #mindsetmonday #kindnessmatters

05.01.2022 Name one thing you have learned in 2020! I read recently that we learn more in painful experiences than we do in pleasurable ones - so that means we must all have acquired some profound wisdom! So tell me - what has been your biggest takeaway this year!

05.01.2022 Today is the International Day of the Girl. This year's theme is inspired by adolescent girls. I am lucky enough to have an amazing daughter who inspires me every day. ... She has a kind and generous heart, sees the potential in others, knows how to choose great friends and has a servant heart. She stands up for what she believes in. In her first year of highschool at a private school she successfully advocated for a formal school shorts option for girls. I am proud beyond measure. This year's theme "My voice, our equal future" is focused on seizing the opportunity to reimagine a better world inspired by adolescent girls as change-makers energized and recognized, counted and invested in. All girls want worldwide is to assert their power to: Live free from gender-based violence, harmful practices, and HIV and AIDS Learn new skills towards the futures they choose Lead as a generation of activists accelerating social change It's not too much to ask. Let's empower the women leaders of our future now! #internationaldayofthegirl #girlpower

04.01.2022 This is one of my favourite Ruth Bader Ginsburg quotes. Her legal career when considered against the backdrop of the era she embarked upon it - has been such an inspiration to so many. The tenacity with which she fought for the causes she believed in, to seek equality for all, and her fiery dissenting judgements - saw her gain near "rock star" status and she became dubbed "The Notorious R.B.G" after the rapper "the Nortorious B.I.G". ... RBG may have been small in stature - but she really was larger than life. Vale R.B.G

03.01.2022 Christmas party kick off perfection!

02.01.2022 As the calendar year draws to a close it is easy to jump on the "good riddance' band wagon - but life is too precious to throw the days we were given out on the trash heap. I have in years past picked "themes" for the year ahead. Last year my theme was "restore". I have to confess that I really didn't do the things I had in mind for that theme - I didn't manage to get back to earlier bed times and earlier rise times, I didn't exercise as much as I should have, I didn't lose... the extra kilos that had found their way to my midlife waist line and I didn't get back to Latin dancing with my hubby. So I was thinking I should just aim for a "do-over" year next year. That was until I took a minute to reflect back on 2020 - and realised that this year had been ALL about restoration. It restored in me a faith in the power of community. It restored to me precious family time. It renewed my appreciation of the things that matter most to me and restored my focus there. So rather than say "good riddance" I plan to tie a bow on 2020 and remember it well as my year of restoration - then open my heart to all that next year might bring. How about you? How will you close your eyes to the "old ends" of 2020? #mindsetmonday

02.01.2022 25 years ago today I was admitted to practice as a solicitor in Queensland! Standing in my Anthea Crawford suit (that still hangs in the back of my wardrobe) so young and so naive - I could not begin to imagine where this love affair with the law and justice would take me! I wanted to become a lawyer to help people. ... I can only hope that I have done that for my clients along the way. Finding kinder and more compassionate ways to help those who face the loss of their loved ones is my greatest passion! I can only hope that when I look back on my career in years to come I can say that I helped in some way to forge that change. On that note - I head into 2 days of Collaborative Practice for Wills and Estates training! Lighting the spark in Perth for this "better way"! Happy Friday! #25years #lawyerstyle #flashback #bethechange
