19.01.2022 Have you ever had tennis elbow before? How long did it take for it to get better? Tennis elbow is a fairly common overuse injury that is caused by a repetitive activity. Tennis players are not the only people who can get this injury builders, butchers, painters, carpenters and other racquet sports can also get tennis elbow. Even if you have been doing a lot of wood splitting or pruning during a weekend, you may also start feeling a bit of this pain. Tennis elbow is caused ...by irritation of the tendon fibres that connect the muscles of the forearm that attach to the elbow. Symptoms include pain on the outside of the elbow and poor grip strength. The first step to treat tennis elbow is to reduce the irritation. Relative rest and ice the irritated tendons. Compression from a bandage or brace can also help with the irritation and pain. Once the symptoms have settled, the next step to treat tennis elbow is to strengthen the muscles of the forearm with gentle exercises. Use exercises that focus on improving grip strength by working the muscles in the forearm. Strengthening the forearm muscles will help prevent the onset of tennis elbow. An excellent exercise to strengthen the forearm is a wrist extension: sit in a chair and hold a small weight in your hand (e.g. a 0.5kg dumbbell, a tin can, or a drink bottle) with the palm facing down, resting your elbow on your knee. Keep the palm facing down and extend your wrist upward, curling it towards your body. Repeats 10 times on each side.
