22.01.2022 Some comments on Q14 and 20 from the HSC. First 14. Any sale of an asset in a business MUST by definition end up included in the income statement. Its not as if its a choice. As an example, a business pays $100 for an asset. The asset is on the balance sheet. Some time later, the business sells that asset for $150. The accounting entry would show a $50 gain on sale of asset on the income statement. This is not sneaky or underhanded. It must therefore appear on the income sta...tement. At the end of the period, an income statement is produced. If it is thought that this is a "one off" or "extraordinary" event, then a "normalised profit" figure would appear as part of the notes. There is therefore no satisfactory answer to this question. Now - 20. Which gearing is "better" - Higher or lower? Which gearing is "worse" - Higher or lower? The examiners take the view that lower debt is "better than higher debt. That reducing debt for a business is a good thing. Except that it isnt. If a business doesnt carry sufficient "debt", many analysts consider it has a "lazy balance sheet". It reflects poorly on the managers of the business. As the following article points out better than I can, a business without debt is saying "Even though interest rates are at super low levels, we cant think of a project that we could do that would more than pay for itself". - https://www.afr.com//leverage-lazy-public-balance-sheet-20 The HSC examiners have taken this position multiple times over the years - and it is not right. Imagine a question in economics which asserts a budget deficit is by necessity a bad thing - and a surplus on the other hand is a good thing? No - examiners want to hear of the risks involved in EITHER - not an absolute judgement. And while Im at - are we out of possible questions? Q20 2020 and Q20 2014 = exactly the same. Really?
