25.01.2022 Bayswater Primary School's 125th anniversary is coming up and to celebrate, they're holding an event on Sunday 24 November. Bayswater Historical Society will be putting on a display of Bayswater Primary School memorabilia at the event, inside the school library. #bayswaterhistoricalsociety #bayswaterhistory #bayswaterreunion

24.01.2022 I've just posted this to the Baysie community page, but it would be terrific to get some input from the followers of RBHH also (where there's no cross over between groups). Hi folks. I'm a community rep on the Metronet Community Advisory Group. At our next meeting, the Metronet team have asked us to bring our views on a number of questions, and to seek community opinions on these questions as well. I will very happily collate responses to this post thread and feed them back t...o the Metronet team. Questions are: Placemaking questions Your friend is moving to Perth and they want your advice on where to settle and Bayswater is on their shortlist. Why should they choose Bayswater? What are 2 or 3 things about Bayswater that remind you of your connection to this place and its community? In the future I hope that Bayswater will be known for? Describe Bayswater in three words. What activities/services/spaces are missing from the Bayswater Town Centre? Looking forward to seeing everyone's answers!

23.01.2022 For anyone interested in seeing how council voted on the demolition application lodged by Yolk Property Development for 9 & 11 King William St, here's screenshots from the meeting minutes. Full minutes here: https://www.bayswater.wa.gov.au//ordinary-council-meeting-

22.01.2022 The City is in the throes of the first stages of developing it's new strategic community plan. Part of this process is some community workshops to talk about ideas and priorities. We encourage you ALL to sign up and be an advocate for heritage and therefore our sense of place to be preserved and invigorated. Here's the link!

21.01.2022 Have you voted in the City of Bayswater local government elections yet? There are candidates running in all wards except West ward, where Dan Bull was returned unopposed. Councillors representing other wards will be voting on matters outside their own wards, which means that voting in the best candidates possible for the whole of the City is so important! You have until 6:00pm tomorrow to put in your vote, which can be lodged in person to meet the deadline. Your vote really DOES matter!

20.01.2022 Interesting article in today's West with comment from a respected commentator.

20.01.2022 These two pencil on board artworks of 9 & 11 King William Street were commissioned by Keith Clements from well known Perth artist Peter Matulich in 2016. Sadly, Peter has since passed away. These are some of his last works. You can act now to save these two buildings from demolition by putting in a submission to the City of Bayswater but hurry! Submissions must be made by 4.30pm tomorrow, 25 September. Go to https://engage.bayswater.wa.gov.au/planning-applications-pu - the second item listed has more information about the demolition application and shows you where to make a submission.

19.01.2022 From today's edition of the Eastern Reporter features an article regarding the DevelopmentWA survey which is out now. If you haven't seen or done the survey yet, please look further down our page for the link. To ensure fulsome community opinion, we need everyone to feed into it.

19.01.2022 On Tuesday 5th (evening), the demolition application from Yolk Property Developments to demolish 9 & 11 King William St will be voted on by our councillors. We encourage each and every one of you to either attend the council meeting, or contact the councillors to tell them that the City officer's report to not approve the application be upheld. Even if you only send a couple of lines, such as I support the city officer’s report and agree that these buildings must be conserv...ed and enhanced, or any councillor who votes against the city officer and against a 4 to 1 submission ratio against demolition is voting FOR a sand patch and FOR developers over community. It's easy - the email addresses can be found at the link. The couple of minutes it will take will go a long way towards showing council where the ratepayers stand on this matter! See more

18.01.2022 Meanwhile in Subiaco.... a development in DevelopmentWA's R-AC0 zone has been knocked back for a second time by council. The zoning allows for developments up to 6 storeys and 22.5m high. Here's hoping that the height limit applied to the heritage core of the Baysie town centre is a bit more modest.

18.01.2022 Interesting blog post from Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt regarding the heritage significance of a 1956 built building in North Fremantle, and ultimately, it's retention. We have heard plenty of voices claiming that because all of the buildings in the Baysie heritage heart are not on the City's heritage inventory, they should not be retained. We would argue that the majority of remaining buildings in the town centre are intrinsic to the identity of our town from both a historic and aesthetic point of view.

17.01.2022 News just in - the City of Bayswater has just uploaded the agenda for their Heritage Advisory Committee meeting on 12 Feb. At the meeting, they will consider what they are referring to as the former Municipal Heritage Inventory. There is a recommendation of note in there: 5. Requests that the City do not proceed with the development of heritage area design guidelines for Bayswater town centre and work with Development WA to ensure heritage considerations are incorporated into any design guidelines they develop Download your copy and have a read. And tell us what you think!

16.01.2022 Today is the last chance to make a submission on the Metronet development application for the Bayswater station. Please take the time to make a submission. See link below: https://www.dplh.wa.gov.au/bayswaterstation

16.01.2022 We'd like to offer a heart felt congratulations to the successfully elected City of Bayswater councillors. RBHH looks forward to working with our councillors and the City to ensure that our town centre's heritage is respectfully treated during all the activity that's ahead of us. With only 18 heritage properties remaining in the King William/Whatley core, we simply can't afford to lose any more.

14.01.2022 Fantastic news!!

14.01.2022 Thanks Tessa for drawing our attention to this article.

14.01.2022 Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure. However we're pretty sure nobody would have fallen for this attempt!

13.01.2022 Check the current edition (print only at this stage) of the Eastern Reporter for an article about the Bayswater Station design debacle. Helpfully scanned here!

12.01.2022 We had a win tonight! Thank you to each of the City of Bayswater councillors who voted to uphold the officers recommendation to not grant permission to demolish two important pieces of our town centre's fabric tonight. We are happy!

12.01.2022 Here's a great little article worth a read, and if you have a bit more time, tune in to the podcast, too.

12.01.2022 THIS IS IT, FOLKS. On Tuesday morning, the Western Australian Planning Commission will be meeting to review and likely approve the revised structure plan for the Bayswater town centre. This revised plan recommends higher density up to 10 storeys. We need you now like we’ve never needed you before.... We ask for all likers of this page to visit the link below and complete an online deputation. We are a bit late we just heard about this unfortunately but IT MUST BE ASAP. Even if your submission is one line long, it’s better than nothing, and PROVES that there is a voice out there other than Future Bayswater’s pro-development one. Please act now. https://www.dplh.wa.gov.au//request-for-deputation-present Suggested comments you could use: I support the protection of the heritage core of the Bayswater town centre I support development outside of the core area of the Bayswater town centre I do not support development of more than four storeys in the historic Bayswater town centre core area I support human scale development in the Bayswater Town Centre I support higher density development around the station precinct, but not within the core King William St/Whatley Cres heritage heart of the town centre You can write "resident" in the Organisation field. The Agenda Item number is SPN/2145, the title is BAYSWATER TOWN STRUCTURE PLAN Committee is the Statutory Planning Committee In one of the empty fields, write "Written submission only" - you don't have to attend. If you have the time to write a full submission, please do! For your info: The WAPC have changed the 10 precincts identified in the structure plan to 2! Core and Frame being the two designated areas. The department does not believe that the town structure plan has enough residential density, that the building height limits are insufficient in scale and suggest rezoning to R-CA0. The report states that the station will be 27 metres high (equivalent to an 8-9 storey building). It will only be 12 - 13 metres high (equivalent to a 3-4 storey building). Highlight the COB endorsement of a heritage area, the need for sensitive human scale development and respecting this heritage core! We believe that the development lobby have been submitting en-masse to prove that the majority of the Bayswater residents support higher density.

11.01.2022 Respect to the people of Nedlands for raising their voices and speaking out against these issues. Great things can happen when people mobilise and speak out. We at RBHH are always looking for people to join us in writing letters, attending meetings and engaging others.

08.01.2022 Thank you to Future Bayswater for hosting a great event last night attended by Cr Dan Bull - Mayor, City of Bayswater and Lisa Baker MLA! It was wonderful to hear from Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt regarding how Fremantle has managed to respect and conserve its heritage buildings whilst still providing infill in other zones; a cause we believe strongly about. The authenticity of the historic buildings in our small village cannot be replicated or replaced, but there's plenty of... other options for higher density in Bayswater (including immediately opposite the train station) which we would love to see explored. With the MRA set to take over planning approvals in our heritage heart now is the time to have your voice heard and say no to overdevelopment of this core area, and eventually more investment in the preservation of the buildings forming our Bayswater story. Please sign our petition and share this page if you agree! https://www.change.org/p/the-wa-government-respect-bayswate

08.01.2022 Hot of the press this morning. With gratitude to our council for making a statement at their meeting this week.

07.01.2022 A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to make a submission to the City against the demolition application sought by Yolk for 9 & 11 King William St. 79% of submissions were against the plan to demolish. The City officer's report is well worth reading, emphatically recommending that the demo application not be supported. We are also heartened to read that there is a plan to declare that the Heritage Heart of our town be designated as the Bayswater Town Centre Heritage Area! Our new council will meet and vote on this matter on November 5. We encourage you all to let all councillors know your thoughts ahead of this vote.

07.01.2022 We have a brand new website! You can visit www.respectbayswater.com to read our group's positioning statement, explaining where we stand on important matters. You can do us another favour too - if you're out and about and you see examples of heritage and development that you think are good or bad, post them to social media and use the hashtag, #respectbayswater. We want your contributions to our gallery page, which at the moment, is bare. Thanks in advance!

05.01.2022 DevelopmentWA have a survey out to ascertain what the people of Bayswater want to see prioritised as part of their project plan for the town centre. Click through and complete a survey, and ask them to put heritage first!

05.01.2022 You only have until 4:30 tomorrow Wednesday 25th September to have your say on the proposal for complete demolition of 9 & 11 King William Street Please click the link below and fill in the form. It only takes a few minutes!: https://engage.bayswater.wa.gov.au//development-applicatio

05.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who read our recent post about the Bayswater Town Centre Structure Plan going before the WA Planning Commission, particularly those of you who sent in a written deputation. We hear that a "very large number" of submissions were received and despite us missing their set deadline for inclusion, they combined them all and included them on the day regardless. Well done, it was fantastic to see the community speaking out on the importance of respecting the chara...cter of our town centre. The draft minutes of the meeting are up on the website for your review. We encourage everyone to read them. It doesn't appear that the revised structure plan was formally approved at this meeting, but the committee has requested that the City make a number of changes before resubmitting the plan for approval. Ryan Keys from DevelopmentWA attended the meeting and we are slightly buoyed by this comment he made: "... that DevelopmentWA will base their approach on ensuring the character of Bayswater is reflected in the core area." Let's all hope for a good outcome for the remaining heritage in our town centre.

04.01.2022 We applaud all efforts to stand up and speak out when something is wrong. And there is plenty wrong with the initial design of the Baysie train station. The difference here is that RBHH advocate for effectively lobbying government - as a collective, and as individual community members - to affect a better outcome for Bayswater. Our state government are investing a large amount of infrastructure spending in our town, let's try and work WITH them to achieve a better result. We are really looking forward to seeing the next round of design changes presented to the CAG in September.

04.01.2022 Interesting article today on WAToday regarding the uninspiring state of much of the new development taking place around town.

04.01.2022 So... the proposed Bayswater train station. What do you think about it? If you find it bulky, overpowering, and in complete contrast with our town centre, we agree! We encourage all of our page followers to write to the powers that be and let them know what you think. And to do that, we've made the job easier for you if you aren't sure where to start. Visit the page on our website, http://www.respectbayswater.com/bayswater-station, and click the link at the bottom of the page for some suggestions you can cut and paste, or adapt. If we don't act, nothing will change. And it's our Baysie after all, isn't it?

04.01.2022 Today, the Metronet East Redevelopment Scheme, taking in Bayswater, was released for comment by DevelopmentWA. Please have a read through as and when you can. The public comment period is open now until 15 September.

03.01.2022 September 15th is the deadline for comments and submissions regarding the draft redevelopment guidelines that have been put out by DevelopmentWA for our town centre. We urge all of our followers to make a submission, even if it's only short! This document will guide the planning framework for the town centre, particularly where lots are being rezoned to R-AC0. https://developmentwa.com.au//metropolitan-redevelopment-a

03.01.2022 You have only 5 days remaining to have your say on the complete demolition of 9 and 11 King William Street. The City of Bayswater’s own website states that category 3 buildings will only be demolished where there is significant justification for their removal. As both properties have provided amenity to our community for the past three years this is a hard point for the developer to argue!! It only takes a minute to have your voice heard. Click on the link below and encour...age our council to respect and celebrate our high street: https://engage.bayswater.wa.gov.au//development-applicatio

02.01.2022 RBHH supporter Jessica is in Sydney at the moment, and sent us a great message for our page and followers. Today she's in one of Sydney’s most expensive suburbs (Woollahra), which absolutely nails the medium density and versatile village centre briefs. Why is it so expensive? Because of its close proximity to the city and beaches yes, but also because of its heritage protection, tree canopy retention and height limits.

02.01.2022 We’ve been called plenty of names over the past few years. Sadly, some people think that name calling and bullying behaviour is okay and a great way to score points. One very recent accusation made particularly rankled Metronet puppets. For the record, we would like to make our position on the Bayswater train station very clear. A quick look further down our page will show a post we made recently regarding our opinion of the design before the community at this time. Howev...er, we firmly believe that when it comes to achieving a positive outcome, finding a way to work WITH government via Metronet is the best way to do things! RBHH has a group representative on the current incarnation of the Community Advisory Group (CAG). We admire and respect each of the residents on the CAG who are devoting their time to ensure all voices are heard and respected. RBHH feel that working in a positive way, proactively pushing for a station and surrounding precinct that is sympathetic and respectful of our town’s heritage context is the way to go. We might not get our own way on this project, but we will be giving it a red-hot go, and at the very least we will have done our utmost to influence change the right way.

02.01.2022 When the state government refuses to rule out 12 storeys in our town centre... the last thing we want is to be left with a concrete canyon of high rise units, soaring above convenience stores and fast food outlets. You have until 25th September to comment on the application to demolish two heritage buildings in our high street.

01.01.2022 WA Today ran a series of interesting articles last year on the tangled web relating to developers here in WA. There are links to other articles at the bottom of the page, too.
