11.01.2022 It is excellent to see the Inspector of Custodial Services has found that Wandoo Rehabilitation Prison is showing great promise and achievement. Our members play a huge role in the success of this prison and should be congratulated on their dedication and professionalism. It’s still however disappointing to see staff are not afforded the same well-kept amenities as the prisoners and this should be rectified. As the report points out we would also like to see an improvement i...n the communication between management and staff. 11.01.2022 On this day in 2017, Mark McGowan announced the return of Wandoo Prison to the public sector. Since then, Wandoo has led the way in breaking the cycle of drug related crime in WA, while delivering better value for money for taxpayers - further evidence that prisons should be run by the State, and not for profit. WAPOU members remain bitterly disappointed that the success of Wandoo, and the recent successful transition of Melaleuca Woman’s Prison from private operation to th...e public sector, has not been followed up with the return of Acacia Prison as Serco’s contract comes to its end. WAPOU Secretary Andy Smith speaking to ABC about the understaffed West Kimberley Regional Prison, read more below.

01.01.2022 Officers at Greenough Regional Prison have reported conditions at the facility have not changed since a mass riot and breakout in 2018. WAPOU Secretary Andy Smith said the prison was horrendously short-staffed due to restrictions on overtime, which has forced the prison to go into rolling lock-downs. We recognise that they have to work within a budget (but) all of the catalysts that were in place prior to the riot in 2018 are being put into effect, he said. ... It is a recipe for disaster."
