25.01.2022 Celebrating 85 years in 2020

25.01.2022 Smoking Ceremonies are an ancient custom among First Australians in which native plants are burnt to produce smoke and acknowledge the ancestors and pay respect to the land, waters and sea of country. They are cultural and spiritual ceremonies. The herbal smoke signifies healing and cleansing. Earlier this month, a Smoking Ceremony was held at Resthaven Mount Gambier by a local Boandik Elder, Ken Jones. Ken is a great storyteller and believes in the power of 'Story Telling'. ...He shared with us part of his journey towards supporting his family and other Aboriginal people through troubled times and difficult happenings. Sitting and yarning is part of his teaching. In a smoking ceremony, it is not just the smoke that is important but also how the fire is lit and what is used to make it. Some mobs might only use a certain type of leaves or bark while others may interchange them depending on what the ceremony is. For the Mount Gambier ceremony, Ken used dry softwood kindling, charcoal, green and dry foliage, comprising of Blackwood, Winter Wattle, Sheoak, Manna Gum Eucalyptus, Boandik Reeds and rushes, Saltwater Paperbark, Moonah Dry land teatree. Ken’s passionate "yarning" showed us that through difficult times, celebrating our strong spirit, caring for our country, building our emotional strength and loving our friends and family is the way into the future. What a valuable teaching! Thank you, Ken. Here are some photos of this special event. See more
