25.01.2022 ***Friday Finds*** Is it just me or does it seem like this Winter is even longer than it usually is? Today I’ve been reflecting on this especially as I stepped out for my daily walk. I braced as I headed into the chilly wind, thankful for the sun bringing a little warmth. Walking and thinking is something that I look forward to. I notice that I can start my walk with one frame of mind (sometimes a little negative) but as I continue, my mood lifts and I seem to walk myself int...o a better frame of mind. I was thinking about this today as I noticed that initial feeling of despair when I felt the cold wind on my face. Knowing that this happens I returned to my mindfulness practice-observing and noting the feeling without judgement and allowing it to pass. As I walked I was fully present noticing my thoughts, my body moving and nature around me. Checking in with myself as I returned home I felt happy and content. I hope you can practice mindfulness and find time to walk in nature this weekend, Sherrill xx #mindfulness #nature #winter #thinking #walking #observing #thoughts

23.01.2022 ***Friday Finds*** In today’s find I’m sharing the State Library of Victoria’s series of Bibliotherapy events which started last Saturday. There is a new one recorded each week until the end of October. You might wonder what Bibliotherapy is and what it has to do with yoga? Essentially it is book therapy, using literature to nurture, soothe and provide space for healing. Never more important for us than in these recent challenging times. ... I think Bibliotherapy aligns to the yoga that I teach as I like to theme classes around a piece of yoga text, a quote, a poem or even just to share something that resonates with me. In Bibliotherapy (as in yoga) the literature is read aloud offering participants the opportunity to embrace the experience of being read aloud to. Being ‘read to’ is something that I have fond memories of as a child but sadly as we ‘grow up’ this lovely experience is lost to us. We can choose how we want to absorb these words; we can pay attention, yet let them wash over us without that focused attention that we usually have when reading for ourselves. We can tune in to our bodies and minds and notice the feelings and emotions or even images or memories that appear for us without judgement. Maybe we even find that questions arise for us and if journaling is something that you practice, you can respond to these as you need to. I’ll be tuning in at 11am tomorrow for the next episode, I hope you can too! If not you can listen at a later time. Wishing you all some mindful moments this weekend, Sherrill xx #thisis2020 #bibliotherapy #mindfulness #healing #nurturing #soothing #calming #grounding #peace #insights #balance #beautifulmoments #selfcare #literature #yogatexts #quote #poem #journaling

18.01.2022 ***Friday Finds*** Today’s find is about finding joy in nature. This week I took the ferry over to Sorrento. As well as enjoying the delights of this little town I just knew that I wanted to spend time appreciating the beach before returning home. I sat on the sand observing the sights and sounds all around me and then took a little paddle in the sea. It was pure bliss!... I hope you enjoy this short video of my paddle...notice the sounds of the seagulls, the waves, the people. There’s lots to see here too...the seaweed, the movement of the water, the sand, the shells and the way the sunlight bounces and reflects off the water. Whilst you can’t feel the sensations, I’m sure you can imagine the cool water washing over my feet as the waves ebb and flow. I hope you can find time to slow down this weekend and notice the wonders of nature, Sherrill xx

18.01.2022 ***Friday Finds*** Today’s find is an experience inspired by an Instagram post from one of my teachers, lindanewmanyoga invited us to join her in chanting a mantra 108 times each morning for 40 consecutive days from the beginning of September. I have completed similar 40 day practices before and found the experience to be extremely valuable. Committing to a daily practice is challenging as we humans like to take shortcuts, avoid discomfort or just find excuses for why we don’...t have time to do things. So knowing that I have to show up each day for 40 consecutive days helps me to establish a positive habit that is non negotiable. I think of it as a form of self care where I give myself this time. It’s a simple yet powerful practice. All I am doing is chanting the mantra Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha 108 times. The beauty of this practice is that it can be done silently, aloud or even sung; just do what feels right for you. Sometimes I have done all three during a session! Why this mantra you may ask? Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha is a common prayer to invoke Ganesha (also known as Ganapataye). In the Hindu tradition Ganesha or Ganesh is widely revered as the remover of obstacles. The mantra is also calming and grounding and can help us to find peace, knowledge and prosperity. It seems like the right time for me to complete this powerful practice as we enter the last couple of weeks of this current lockdown where I’m feeling a little tired of this current situation, yet unsure but hopeful of what’s ahead. It’s not too late to start your own practice and if you start now you will know that you are practicing with others and hopefully feel that connection of a shared practice. Post in the comments if you have any questions or experiences to share. Happy Friday! 16.01.2022 ***Friday Finds*** Today’s find is a recent Instagram find, the writer Brianna Wiest. I find her writing to be thoughtful, considered and thought provoking. The following is a quote that I shared in a recent Yin class that I taught at Upstate Studios as it got me thinking about my experiences this yearand about how I’ve been given the time and opportunity to learn lessons by thinking about many aspects of my life. Some of these that I’ve been reminded about include being pr...esent, gratitude, opportunities, resistance, beginnings, endings, family, friends, purpose, balance, nature, ideas, creativity, beautiful moments and I’m sure there are more that may be yet to come. How about you? I’d love to hear if you’ve experienced any insights or lessons this year. Please share in the comments. Enjoy the beautiful moments this weekend, Sherrill xx #thisis2020 #disruptors #gratitude #change #briannawiest #lessonslearned #insights #endings #beginnings #purpose #opportunities #resistance #balance #nature #ideas #creativity #beautifulmoments

16.01.2022 ***Friday Finds*** Little did I know that completing my first Yoga Teacher training was only the beginning of my learning! Since I started on my teaching path I have continued to undertake Professional Development seeking to expand my teaching and understanding of Yoga. The current situation has closed off some learning opportunities yet opened them in other ways, such as the possibility of more time being available for learning or online learning made available when it usual...ly wouldn’t be offered this way. In a recent online workshop I attended we explored the practice of Restorative yoga and Pratyahara. According the Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali, Pratyahara is the fifth of eight limbs (or steps) of yoga and is defined as a conscious withdrawal from the input of the senses. So much of the information presented in this workshop resonated with me and I hope that by sharing it with you there is something that resonates for you too. Many of us are familiar with Savasana, that delightful rest that we look forward to at the end of a yoga class. In practicing Restorative yoga we can choose to practice just one pose and that pose is Savasana. In these challenging times of uncertainty and the seemingly never ending situation we find ourselves in Savasana is the perfect antidote. Like many of you I’m finding our current situation to be a stressful time. I can attest to thoughts where I tell myself that as a Yoga teacher I should be able to better manage feeling unsettled, anxious, annoyed or sad with the current situation. These thoughts are not helpful to me as they create more stress. But what is the solution? The solution is Restorative yoga and Savasana! Using physical relaxation of the body in Savasana to create the conditions for mental relaxation where we can let go of these stressful thoughts, moving into that Pratyahara state. If you need more information or assistance with finding and creating your Savasana state, send me a message or let me know in the comments. Sherrill xx

08.01.2022 What better way to rest and recover after a busy weekend of learning and teaching during the Qigong Immersion 1 with my wonderful teacher Hang from saigon om Did you know that only 20 minutes in this delicious Restorative Savasana is all you need to recharge the batteries? This position is simple yet ticks all boxes for what you need - head support, eye pillow, bolster (under knees) and a warm blanket.... Of course you can always Savasana for longer than 20 minutes if you want to... 07.01.2022 ***Friday Finds*** Today I was struggling for a "find" to share. I decided that maybe today was not the day to pressure myself to post something as it's important to me that I post from my heart, rather than feeling obligated. Letting go turned out to be such a good idea! Late in the afternoon on my walk I noticed a bunch of caterpillars on the ground. What attracted my attention was that they were moving in an unusual way - they seemed to be doing the "worm". I stopped and w...atched them for a while enjoying their funny movements. I love how although this is a walk that I do often and thus is so familiar, there is always something new to see as long as I take the time to slow down and notice. Here's the video, hope you enjoy it! I hope you can find time to slow down this weekend and notice the wonders of nature, Sherrill xx #thisis2020 #nature #slowdown #notice #mindfulness #letgo #caterpillars

06.01.2022 ***Friday Finds*** I enrolled in this free 7 day breath course although I was nervous of getting up for a 6am zoom session each morning as I don't normally get up this early and it is particularly challenging on these cold Winter mornings. I am pleased to say that I have made every session since Monday and will definitely be there for the next two! Uma Spender Yoga has generously offered this course for free and the uptake has been so overwhelming that she is offering it agai...n starting next Monday. Uma delivers each session in a calm, considered and inclusive way and explains the benefits of the practices as we do them. I'm sharing this today because the course has been so beneficial for me. I have found the sessions to be relaxing and interesting and I have learned some new things and refined some other practices that I have previously experienced. Although it's only been 5 days I have already I have felt the difference in my breathing with increased ease and more awareness of my breath. We can all learn to breath better and that can only improve our well-being. Something that has never been more important than now! If you want to chat to me about the course please comment or DM me. Stay safe and enjoy your weekend, Sherrill xx

01.01.2022 ***Friday Finds*** As we end the month of July, we find ourselves still living in constantly changing and challenging times. This year has seen us having to regularly readjust and recalibrate our lives. As we move in and out of this fluid state we have seen acts of kindness as well as other less noble acts. Today I'm sharing this Action for Happiness calendar that arrived in my email this morning. I find that for me the end of each month is a time to take stock, regroup and ...set myself up for the next month. Thus this calendar with the theme "Altruistic August" seemed worthy of sharing. I'm going to try to follow it by practicing one act of kindness each day. Enjoy the weather this weekend, Sherrill xx #altruisticaugust #actionforhappiness #kindness
