25.01.2022 In the last few days it has come out that in February, it was passed that survivors of sexual abuse, where they have spoken to the police about their experience and had their offender charged, they are not allowed to speak publicly about their lived experience. Up until recently, survivors in NT and TAS weren’t able to speak either, however this was rectified. We are deeply feeling for all survivors in our community and beyond on hearing this news, and for the impact that th...is has in your recovery journey, as well as on our public awareness about the reality of sexual offences in the community. We are committed to re-instilling our message of hope in moving forward with yours, and those in your lives journey. We also recommend that you support the #letusspeak campaign so that collectively, we can repair, heal and share our stories of growth, resilience and overcoming. https://www.change.org/p/daniel-andrews-revoke-victoria-s-n #Restoringhopeau #LetHerSpeak #LetUsSpeak #ChildhoodSexualAbuse

23.01.2022 Breaking: Victory at last, as Victoria poised to change victim gag law at midnight! JAIME LEE PAGE, whose story started the #LetUsSpeak campaign HAS WON her ri...ght to tell HER STORY under her real name. And TOMORROW tens of thousands of SEXUAL ASSAULT SURVIVORS in Victoria will have THEIR VOICES RETUREND TO THEM as the law changes. Last week we also managed to thwart the Government’s appalling attempt to place a ban on the names of deceased rape victims, such as Jill Meagher, Eurydice Dixon and, tragically, Jaime’s own stepsister, Carol - who was murdered by Jaime’s father, after she reported the rapes and abuse he had perpetrated against the two sisters starting at age 8. (Carol’s OWN MOTHER then married the offender, David Hodson, in a prison wedding so she wouldn’t have to testify against him). It’s taken us EIGHT MONTHS and THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS to obtain Jaime’s court order, and along the way, we hit roadblock after roadblock, especially when the courts DEMANDED THAT JAIME SHOULD HAVE TO ASK HER FATHER'S PERMISSION TO USE HER OWN NAME. But we persisted and today, JAIME PREVAILED. Through her incredible advocacy, not only has she regained the right to share her story and honor her sister’s memory, but she has also managed to help forge the LetUsSpeak campaign, and change a law!! Along the way, we have also managed to obtain TEN OTHER COURT ORDERS for ten other living survivors who have been able to reveal their own names prior to law reform: Nicole Lee, Ashleigh Rae Cooper, Tara Shultz, Lea Runas, Phil Nagle, Paul Levey, Kim Elzaibak, Stephen Woods, Alison Quigley and Tracey Morris (See the PHOTO). If you can, please read Jaime’s story and share it. (Content warnings apply, including to the incredibly powerful video made by Lori Youmshajekian). https://www.news.com.au///a42a69ec06c81d56fd398cfa6e142573 And if you’d like to donate towards Jaime’s legal fees, you know the drill: https://au.gofundme.com/f/stop-silencing-survivors

16.01.2022 This week is Child Protection Week, a week for recognising both the children and young people at risk in our community as well as recognising those in their lives who support, advocate for, work towards and encourage their safety and wellbeing. We know that whether a child, young person, carer or professional in this space, that while rewarding, it is also a pretty trying space to be in more often than not. And this year brings an additional bunch of challenges with it. We want you to know that we see you and we appreciate every single thing that you are doing to ensure the care of our children and young people. Let’s keep their young lives at the forefront of everything that we do right now

16.01.2022 #LetUsSpeak UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2, 2020 by Nina Funnell, Organizer... Fantastic news! With your help, the #LetUsSpeak campaign lawyers are now working with EIGHT survivors, to assist them to apply for individual court orders to exempt each of them from these shocking gag-laws. "Maggie's" application was lodged last week and we hope to be able to give you an update on her matter in upcoming days. We will also update you on the outcome of each of the 7 other cases as the courts deal with each of them individually . A HUGE amount of legal work goes into a campaign of this scale. In addition to working to support individual survivors, an enormous amount of legal research has been performed by our campaign partner, Marque Lawyers, to bring this atrocity to light in the first place. While we need to redact certain particulars on this bill for privacy and sensitivity reasons (including the real names of victim-survivors which would otherwise appear) we are committed to transparency around when the money is being spent, and the amount being spent. We are so grateful for all the support to date!

15.01.2022 HOPE: The light that continues to call us forward. The reminder that this is just the beginning and that better things are on the horizon.... That voice that tells us that the set back is just a part of moving forward. It’s been a huge week, learning about the new laws in Victoria affecting survivors and the #letusspeak campaign. It is not ok for anyone’s voice to be silenced. Especially when those whose voices are some of the most needed in our community. Now more than ever, we need to ensure that those in our lives affected by sexual abuse feel supported. What are some of your favourite ways of supporting yourself and others at this time? Share away and help to lift our community. https://www.change.org/p/daniel-andrews-revoke-victoria-s-n #Restoringhopeau #LetHerSpeak #LetUsSpeak #ChildhoodSexualAbuse

15.01.2022 Behind so much of our anger is a childhood trauma, and for far too many, that trauma is sexual abuse. #Restoringhopeau #Childhoodsexualabuse #trauma

14.01.2022 SAMSN family, it's NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week, when we acknowledge the fact that Australia has a dark history of Eu...ropean contact with our First Nations people, and that the very first footprints on this continent belong to First Nations peoples, who have looked after this land for thousands of years. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back countless generations. Always Was, Always Will Be Aboriginal Land. When it comes to supporting male survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA), SAMSN recognises the additional issues faced by marginalised groups of men who are not from the dominant white, male culture. This includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, those from culturally diverse backgrounds, men from rural and remote areas, men in the military, men who have been in jail, men with disabilities, men from the LGBTQI communities, and older men. These men can experience additional layers of discrimination, shame, and isolation, and they often have less access to support. SAMSN is here for you, during NAIDOC week and every week. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek

13.01.2022 We admire the survivors so much for their determination to get justice. https://www.google.com.au//218d0bea-01e6-46fd-bb71-4804143

12.01.2022 Victoria, our beautiful home state is going back into lockdown, news that would’ve crushed people to their very core. Many will face further financial strain as their businesses, their livelihood, are once again threatened. Many may feel a deep level of anxiety at the potential of further job losses.... As we may know and understand, this can lead to heightened stresses in our family homes as we attempt to navigate this crisis in survival mode. What this means over the next 6 weeks for many of our fellow Victorian’s is, they will be at higher risk of family violence with little to no real chance of escaping. Can you imagine what it may be like for those in our community that are at risk? It’s an extremely frightening thought! This means that some of the most vulnerable members within our community will be in lockdown, in their home with their perpetrator of sexual violence. This is the ‘hidden side’ of family violence. Our Children Our Elderly People living with disabilities... ...all made to live in fear of what may happen to them with no way of escaping. To these people, 6 weeks is an eternity. A living hell on earth! So whilst we lockdown again, let’s continue to check in on those who we may suspect to be at risk of any kind. And for those who may be at risk, PLEASE reach out to someone you trust, a professional or if you are in Victoria Australia, visit our resources page for support that is available to you, of course if you feel safe to do so during these uncertain times. We are all in this together! #Restoringhopeau #Lockdown #ReachOut #AllInThisTogether Visit our website for resources at www.restoringhope.org.au

08.01.2022 Why don’t survivors share their experiences? There are a multitude of reasons. Some stem from shame. Some from self blame. Some from feeling hopeless. Some through being afraid of what may happen through sharing. It takes a huge amount of courage, strength and resilience to share. And it matters more than ever to be truthful about the reality of the path we have walked and what happens in our community. ... While we would love for our systems to be set up to foster justice and empowerment, few know as well as sexual abuse survivors that this is often not the case. Hence, #letusspeak campaign exists to rectify what has been passed in law. Despite what is going on right now, please, find those who you trust and speak and share what you need to. Sharing is our recovery, our right and our individual journey can’t be removed from us. https://www.change.org/p/daniel-andrews-revoke-victoria-s-n #Restoringhopeau #LetHerSpeak #LetUsSpeak #ChildhoodSexualAbuse

05.01.2022 Let’s combine our voices for change and sign this petition.

01.01.2022 For everyone who has been trying to follow along with this weeks' unfolding developments regarding the proposed gag-law on deceased sexual assault victims in Vi...ctoria + the news on what is happening regarding the rights of all living sexual assault survivors in that state... I have good news.... And this wrap up piece will pretty much explain the current state of play at the end of this week. TLDR: Living survivors will have their voices restored; the proposed gag on families of deceased victims has been stalled. (With Nicole Lee , Saaed Maasarwe, John Herron, Chrissie Foster and others). Shout out to all the survivors who are part of the campaign, and to the relentless, unwavering support of Sharna JB (and EROC) , Rachael Burgin (and RASARA) and the team at Marque Lawyers. https://www.gofundme.com/f/stop-silencing-survivors

01.01.2022 Not being able to tell our story impacts our recovery journey. It shames us and allows the secret silence about child sexual abuse to continue. Government, stop taking away our voice that has been silent long enough. Please support this campaign #LetUsSpeak
