24.01.2022 We’ve been working on updating our laundry since we received new doors due to the discoloration. Since I’ve really wanted to work on our recycling it’s been a great opportunity to include some new bins. So now we have one for general recycling and one for the redcycle plus an additional basket for those special items. We also have a compost bin near the sink. It’s amazing to see after just two weeks what we need to concentrate on - the soft plastic Majority being bread... bags, snack bags (muesli bar, crackers etc) and frozen veggie bags. 23.01.2022 Amazing what a bit of elbow grease, cleaner and a can of spray paint can do We managed to pick up this outdoor setting for free. Seats had some stains and paint was chipped in a few places but otherwise a great setting that would have unfortunately found its way to land fill sooner or later. A quick dismantle of the wooded arm rests and glass/timber inserts and were away!... We started on the chairs with some outdoor cleaner and meths on the metal, a light grind on any rough paint areas, a light sand on all the timber and prep work was done. We used a water based varnish for the timber, a spray of primer on any bare metal and a final spray of hammertone paint for the final finish to hide any imperfections. I think the colour really shows off the timber we only sprayed the table top edge for now as the client didnt want to complete a full restoration, just a tidy up. We love it and we hope Paul @jestacat75 gets some wonderful use from it. #reuse #recycle #upcycledfurniture #upcycle #outdoordining #nrthqlddinning #summeriscoming

18.01.2022 ** Update from Wyatt & Jack This is the UK company that are doing a tremendous job of recycling inflatables into useable products. They have just recently dropped new products on their website and with the current media attention are, of course, inundated with orders. Good to see them being supported!!... Of course the other side of this attention is that there are pop up companies now claiming the same product so do be aware. I doubt the quality or customer service would be anything like Wyatt and Jack due to them investing the last 10yrs into this family business. Cudos to wyattandjack_shop

18.01.2022 As the summer approaches I thought again of the company turning old paddling pools & inflatables into bags etc well unfortunately they are in the UK but they ship worldwide!!! AND check out their gift vouchers . . . awesome use of product! Wyatt and Jack is the name of the company and since 2017 they have been collecting inflatables and turning them into accessories potentially saving over 100 tonnes of material from landfill - "We let the shape of the item and the areas of ...damage, dictate the shape, in order to use as much of the piece as possible and generate as little, if any, waste as we can" Plastic inflatables are often made from a flexible PVC which is long lasting material BUT PVC is almost never collected from households for recycling. Theyre usually very cheap and when damaged, they are normally just abandoned because people dont know what to do with them. 17.01.2022 So I’ve been chasing a glass dome for a lovely candle that was made by a friend and do you think I could find one that was a) reasonably priced b) correct size and c) available in Brisbane So I decided to use a glass vase I had (which was in a set of 3), found a lovely knob and some glue at @Bunnings. The glue was expensive at $15 but I’ll use it on many more projects over the break, the knob was $3. After watching this video and hearing what Mike is trying to achieve I checked how many plastic bottles I still have in the cupboards for a family of two and its still quite high. When you ask yourself why, the answer is usually I cant buy a refill that can be recycled... So heres a great solution!!! Not only are the bottles themself made from plastic claimed from the ocean but the refills get refilled!! I just wonder if they would sell refills for your own current bottles because they will have to be recycled anyway or sadly end up in the bin. Therefore reducing the need for new bottles to be produced

06.01.2022 This post may not sit under the reuse, recycle, reduce banner but I think it does cover that we, as consumers, need to know more about where our item is coming from AND is this in fair trade to those that supply? This short doco on hair (for hair extensions & wigs) is a great insight to just how unfair and cheap the industry can get while youre parting with hard earned money. You and I know that this is not the only industry that this question applies to BUT we must educate ...people to at least start asking the questions, only then can we truly participate in fair trade. Its good for the supplier, the consumer and hopefully a sustainable process. See more
