16.01.2022 Good morning and Happy Monday! Today we bring to you a clinic snapshot and break down of how an appointment at Results Physiotherapy can help you and what we do to actively aid in your recovery. See below! Assessment: Your treating practitioner will assess you to reach a diagnosis. Evaluating an injury as well as other contributing factors relating to the patient’s injury are a crucial first step to an effective rehab plan.... Patient Centred Care: We want every patient to receive the best outcome possible. In rehabilitation, your physiotherapist will consider your goals and use methods that are suited to achieving individual results. Hands on Care: Here at Results Physiotherapy we use a wide variety of soft tissue techniques, dry needling, joint mobilisation/manipulation and taping to address your symptoms. Active treatment: Patients of Results Physiotherapy still have access to the equipment in the clinic, and are using these to maintain or improve their function in a wide range of conditions. Normally our patients would have access to the Aquatic Centre for hydrotherapy and Pace Gym for strength and conditioning. These are utilised to facilitate return to work fitness throughout the rehab process. The wide body of evidence supports exercise as the gold standard to improving patient pain and function. Support: Our care continues further than just your consultation. We are able to provide exercise and rehabilitation programs to enhance your recovery. We also have access to some of the area’s leading sports physicians, surgeons and psychologists if we felt you needed to be referred for further treatment. 13.01.2022 WHEN IT COMES TO SURGERY, ‘PREHAB’ IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS REHAB. We know that in order to get the best outcome after surgery, you need to prepare your body and mind before. Our previous post outlined the benefits of faster recovery and return to activity, reduction in post-surgical pain and length of stay in hospital and an increase of overall function and muscle strength. Prehab has proven to be advantageous to the following elective surgeries:... Knee surgery A prehab strengthening program resulted in significant improvements in functional movements, such as sitting to standing and walking as early as 1-week post-op and 3 months following surgery (Topp et al. 2009). Prehab lead to improvements in strength and stability prior to surgery, meaning individuals delayed or cancelled their surgery (Alshewaier & Fatoye, 2015). Shoulder surgery A study showed that prehab improves your function enough to delay or opt out of surgery. After 12 weeks of prehab, 75% of 452 patients did not continue with surgery (Kuhn et al, 2013) Hip surgery Prehab before total hip replacement resulted in a faster recovery and increased muscle strength, meaning that the new hip is being supported and stabilised properly. Back surgery After a 6-week prehab program, improvements in range of motion, leg pain intensity, muscle endurance and walking were seen (Marchand et al, 2019). Foot and ankle surgery Prehab can improve ankle range of motion, decrease pain and improve the strength and endurance of the muscles around the joint. To reap the benefits of Prehab for your elective surgery Results Physiotherapy can help you with... Individualised prehab exercise program Education and advice regarding your surgery and recovery Therapeutic hands-on treatment Access to equipment and facilities Guidance and support to ensure you’re moving effectively If you are waiting for elective surgery or would like more information, get in contact with Results TODAY. Use your waiting time before your elective surgery to get your body ready.

08.01.2022 Physical Conditioning for Sport WHAT IS CONDITIONING Conditioning is the development of fitness through training and exercise programs. Programs are tailored to be sport specific and individualised in order to reach certain levels of fitness and target areas for improvement. Goals for each program often include improved ability and performance in the following: speed, agility, strength, power, endurance and balance.... IMPORTANCE OF CONDITIONING Over extended breaks from competitive and social sport, conditioning can decline due to lack of training. Though we see breaks in sport such as off-season and pre-season, a more recent break has resulted from the effect of COVID-19. These breaks can result in decreased performance and can increase your risk of injury. With a lack of consistent conditioning and training players are subject to a decline in skill level and ability to perform due to the quick deterioration of muscle. Injury is possibly the worst result after a period of time without conditioning, lack of tissue and joint loading leads to deconditioned muscle and tendons which subsequently increases the risk of soft tissue injury if returning to sport is not gradual and controlled. HOW TO STAY CONDITIONED To avoid the ill effects after a break from sport and have a more positive return the following is recommended: * Have a specific conditioning/training program (centered around strength, power, balance, endurance, coordination and agility, whether that is from your coach, trainer or other professionals. * Seek education and advice through consulting a professional (exercise physiologist, physiotherapist, trainer). * Be gradual in your intensity and frequency when returning to training to allow adequate time for your body to recover and adapt. * Plan your off season and break periods. * Seek medical advice for injuries.
