24.01.2022 Today I had the privilege of meeting Paul and his team from Scarchi and Boston. I was blown away what this company could do! This company lives for projects that are a challenge. They can help to value engineer a project to create joinery solutions that are to budget. They are on the cutting edge of collaborating with their clients, designers and architects to help bring dreams to life.... Gone are the days of whittling away a design because of tight budget constraints. S&B has found a niche in between designers and shopfitters, helping to take out the unknown from pricing to make out of the square joinery affordable. What totally blew me away today was the cutting edge work they are doing with virtual reality which takes design visualisation into the stratosphere making it experiential. It leaves 3D walk-throughs in the dust. They kitted me up with the virtual reality mask and hand sensors and I literally felt like I was walking through the designed spaces. I may have looked like a complete knob for staff watching me but I am a convert. I was amazed how I felt vertigo jumping off a virtual high rise building. It was exhilarating and a lot safer! Im so looking forward to collaborating with S&B on future projects. Thank you Will Harich for the introduction. It really is game changing stuff!

23.01.2022 Went up to Birtinya pre opening of RA Quality Meats in the new soon to be opened Stockland Birtinya. Stocking up in the next few days for the butcher for Friday grand opening.

23.01.2022 This is one of my projects at the new Coomera Town Centre taking shape. After so many years in the industry I am still amazed at the alchemy that occurs from idea to the material manifestation. I am also still in awe at how many people and processes go into designing and building a shop, the number of people involved and how if you were to work backwards how one shop becomes the work of more people than one first realises. There is a flow on effect. For instance the tile spec...ified in a project affects and involves countless lives. There are the people who mine the clay and the sand to provide the raw materials to make the tiles and glaze. Then there are those who transport the raw materials to the factories, not to mention the people who make the trucks and refine and supply the fuel. Then there are the manufacturers and the tile shops that sell their tiles, and so on. If we begin to see just how many resources, people, and lives are involved in creating and fitting out a shop the mind boggles. #designalchemy #gratitude #shopfitting #coomeratowncentre #designmagic #alchemyofcooperation #retaildesignlab #westfieldcoomera #mindfulness See more

23.01.2022 In todays challenging retail climate, retail facelifts as opposed to total refits of tenants renewing their leases are becoming more common. This is my latest facelift to a sushi kiosk - we applied a cosmetic approach rather than major surgery. #retaildesignlab #retailfitout #retailfacelift #retaildesignerbrisbane #retaildesignergoldcoast #sushikiosk

23.01.2022 RA Quality Meats at the new soon to be opened Stockland Birtinya sure is coming together. In just the last few days it really is starting to look like a butchery. Just like building a house, so much goes into building up the foundation, in this case walls, coolroom, waterproofing, plumbing, electrical, lighting, etc., then all of a sudden within a matter of days, it begins to resemble the vision. Within another couple of days the benches and cabinets will be installed and t...he final touches will be done ready for trading. Its been a pleasure working with the professional team at Stockland and a client who allowed me a free reign in creativity. Images: Stockland #stocklandbirtinya

Spoke with the client and he couldnt speak highly enough of it still and still gets lots of positive comments from customers. Great to hear he is still doing a brisk trade. #retaildesignlab #retaildesign #butcher #butchershop #butchery #butchers #butcherdesign #retaildesignaustralia

19.01.2022 Box & Barrel Homewares new corporate retail branding. First store in a shopping centre to be opened at Garden City shortly.

19.01.2022 We wouldnt usually connect kindness with our economy. Yet uncertain times may offer us a different perspective. As most of us cope with massive changes in our lives, as we are cooped up in our homes, and where mental health has become a more talked about topic of wider significance, kindness is more important than ever. Kindness is in fact I have always thought the most selfish act you can commit!... This may sound like an odd statement. Doesnt kindness instead make you selfless? There is a payoff for us when we show kindness to others. When we create joy in others it cant help but bring us joy and deeper, richer more meaningful connections. In our uncertain times we need to practice kindness and feel connected more than ever. A simple example is where you choose to buy your coffee... It is often more convenient simply to pop into the McDonalds drive-through for a cappuccino. Yet when we make the effort to go to our local cafe, get out of the car and have a conversation with the barista the effort is well worth it. The acknowledgment, conversation, connection and custom can enrich both parties on many levels. So something as simple as where you choose to spend your dollars and time can have great impact. Spend local and share the love. The Kindness Economy. #kindnesseconomy #retaildesignlab #socialenterprise #businesswithheart #kindness #kindnessmatters

18.01.2022 The Depot @westfieldcoomera now open. Pleasure to see the space come to life. Great place to chill next time me you are at Coomera. Great work S & S Shopfitting with the fitout. #thedepotcoffeehouse #coomeratowncentre #westfieldcoomera #retaildesignlab #retaildesignergoldcoast

18.01.2022 Visited yesterday Ziba Hair & Beauty at Hope Island that I designed last year.

17.01.2022 Popped in to see The Fresh Factory at Capalaba Central that we designed and has recently opened. The black timber cladding allows the fruit and vegetables to really ‘pop’ with colour and freshness. The forward facing open refrigeration displays capture shoppers attention as they walk past in the mall with their vibrant produce. ... Produce is sold at discounted prices yet the quality and freshness is first rate. This encourages customers to buy in bulk - so instead of buying a couple of apples you can go away with a whole tray. We designed an open juice bar so that customers can order fresh juices and know that it is being made fresh on the spot. #retaildesign #thefreshfactory #retaildesignlab #retaildesignaustralia

17.01.2022 Facelift to Medispecs at Robina Town Centre. Have taken the tenancy from tired and cluttered to fresh and glamorous.

14.01.2022 I love love loved working with Narisa and Gap on their new food court tenancy at Westfield Chermside. They were so open to my concepts, it was a real pleasure working with them and David from Scentre Group and Jason, Gary and their team at Project Shopfit. We wanted a fresh, natural, light look (with a little bit of pastel) to reflect and bring out the freshness of Thai cuisine. Thank you to all involved. Oh, and I learned what a Pintoh is - its a portable food container much like the Indian tiffin. Narisa brought some back from a trip to Thailand and Jason and his team were able to convert them into pendant lights. #pintohthai #westfieldchermside #scentregroup #restaurantdesigner #retaildesignlife #retaildesignlab #projectshopfit

12.01.2022 When business ceases to be work and becomes love, we no longer have customers but attract lovers. Business Loveability: How loveable is your business?... What is it that attracts customers to your business and sees then return again and again as lovers? What is it about your business that inspires your staff to love your business as much as you and your customers do? What is it that drives customers to choose your product or service based business over similar offerings? Passionterprise: I think it is passion. When you fall deeply in love with what you do, what you provide and with your customers, then your customers cant help but fall in love with you and your business. Passion is about going that extra smile, by putting that extra thought and effort beyond what is required. It is about living and breathing your passion to the point that you eat, live, and obsess about how you can best love your customers, your community and your planet through your business. No amount of clever branding can make up for pure heart, passion and real authenticity. Love Will See You Through: Ill ask you again, how loveable is your business? In our current economy it will be big love that will get you and your business through.

11.01.2022 Nothing more rewarding as a designer than seeing an elated client at the end of a project. Clients like Damien keep me inspired after nearly 20 years in the retail design industry to continue creating spaces for people to enjoy. 07.01.2022 I had a very long and exciting brainstorming session today with an esteemed colleague. It has really inspired both of us. It has made us both realise that humans in challenging times are a resilient and ingenious lot. Even in the midst of crisis there are opportunities waiting. It is up to you to connect with others to discover them. ... We came up with an idea that was staring us in the face. It took us to have a conversation, to combine our experiences and expertise to come up with a business opportunity that really addresses a current and future need. If you dont do anything else in this challenging time, I suggest that you surround yourself with people who you can collaborate with who see opportunities within restrictions. There is gold when we get together and explore opportunities. How can you use this time to make limoncello out of lemons?

06.01.2022 Sneak preview. Getting pretty close now to the fitout completion and opening of Mouth House. Popped in to see the girls as they gear up and the finishing touches, including signage installation, are completed for the official opening in the coming days. ... Mouth House is the Gold Coasts first teeth gem, teeth grillz and teeth whitening studio bringing the latest fashion trends to your pearly whites. Honoured to have been part of delivering this vision and look forward to being part of the growth and expansion of this concept with the two young savvy entrepreneurs. Expecting big things to come as we see early adopters and trend setters express their individuality every time they smile. Amazing mural by @mattybro_art sets the scene. #mouthhouse #retaildesignlab #grillz #goldcoastlifestyle #goldcoastlife

05.01.2022 The current climate gives us time to reflect on how we can do things differently on all levels. Ive been researching the African philosophy of Ubuntu and it has really struck a deep chord in me. The most common direct meaning is, "I am, because of you". It is about a deep reverence and respect for the importance of community, compassion, connection, friendship and sharing. ... Translating it to business that often deals with tangible bottom line economics, this concept may seem a little grey to hard core entrepreneurs but nonetheless can hold real cache, value and importance I believe. I see real possibilities unfolding as we begin to support more our local small businesses such as our little cafes over multinational corporations. Many of these local small businesses know their clients on a more personal and intimate level where there is a deeper sense of connection beyond a mere exchange of goods and services. Imagine doing business with more Ubuntu? How would this look like? What incredible opportunities could this open up? Business can be a powerful force to create a more intimately connected compassionate culture and society. Im excited about exploring the possibilities of how businesses with Ubuntu can have to lift us all up. #retaildesignlab #ubuntu #businessasunusual #businessasunusual2020 #retaildesign

04.01.2022 At this time in human history, as we find ourselves navigating unchartered waters, I am excited by new possibilities and ways of thinking not contemplated before. What is happening in Australia and around the world is unprecedented. Yet we have a choice as to how we see this crisis. We can be get caught up in all the panic, or it can be a time to use the time to reflect, to gather your thoughts, recuperate and see how in the future you can do things differently. Business As U...nusual Getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life. Steve Jobs I cant help but reference Steve Jobs and how he was fired from Apple. We are in essence being fired from business as usual. We have been given the opportunity to start again from a baseline of zero, to reinvent ourselves and flip the switch on how we do business. Creative Juices Who knows what the retail landscape will look like in the future, however, I am inspired by the innovative and creative possibilities that lay ahead. Innovative ways of doing business more consciously, ethically and sustainably. Alcohol distilleries are making hand sanitiser, restaurants are now providing innovative take away options, and a company switched from making giant pop-up stages for big events to designing, manufacturing and selling stand-up desks and other isolation office furniture. Think Differently So how will you meet the current challenges? What opportunities may you uncover in this uncertain but exciting times? Will you be overwhelmed by crisis or be inspired by it?

03.01.2022 Really exciting to go on site to see projects that I have been involved with coming together at #coomeratowncentre . Such a buzz to see the incredible hard work of everyone involved taking form. Even after so many years in the industry I am amazed at how many dedicated and professional people it takes to take a concept to completion from designers, rdms and delivery managers, shopfitters and all their contractors to external consultants, suppliers, and certifiers. I am always in awe of the amount of dedicated hours, passion and sheer hard work in the face of challenges that everyone puts into each project.
