03.05.2022 Feature Hearth Retiling - Recently had a number jobs to retile old hearths. They came up rather nicely using classic Victorian subway tiles. I managed to preserve the rather cute feature tiles for the clients.

19.04.2022 Full Home Wet-Area Renovation - this client wanted to fully renovate all bathrooms and laundry of their home with full-height tiling and modern fixtures.

13.04.2022 Small Ensuite Renovation - this client wanted to modernise his older ensuite with full-height tiling and a feature stone wall.

10.04.2022 Waterproofing failed on this nice 1st-floor balcony due to use of inappropriate materials in the intial and subsequent tiling. This led to water seeping under the tiles and then migrating to the adjacent walls, causing cracking and discolouration. I removed the old tiles, screeded, primed, and waterproofed (making sure to use a double-layer of UV-rated outdoor waterproofing). There were a few technical challenges with ensuring safe access to lay around the exterior of the balustrading. We finished with a balcony trim to keep things looking neat and allow us to waterproof the facing edge of the building.

05.04.2022 This small ensuite was first built in 2000 and had a few minor issues with cracked tiles. The client wished to modernise their bathroom fittings and retile at the same time. They decided to keep the cabinets (to relaminate later) and basin, as the ensuite size severely constrained options. Key considerations were working in an apartment building: setting up safe working areas, managing onsite waste, and minimising disruption to the client while the project was in progess. The client is very happy with the outcome , especially the raised height of the shower.

28.03.2022 The client wanted to renovate the ensuite in their older house because of cracked tiles on the floor of the shower. After some discussion, they decided on skirting height tiling and changing to a mixer shower tap in the process. After some investigation of the cracked floor, I discovered that the cracked tile and long-term water damage had dissolved the substrate and allowed ingress of compacted roots and soil. Other than the removal of the roots and replacement of the substrate, the rest of the renovation was relatively straight-forward.

22.03.2022 The clients approached me as they wished to retile their main floor. After some discussion, the clients selected these 600x600 stone tiles. I removed the old tiles with a heavy-duty jackhammer, repaired the substrate where required, formatted, making sure to leave expansion joints. One of the biggest challenges of tiling a large area is formatting the tile set-out to make sure there are no small pieces anywhere. In this case the house was laid out along a single hallway with ...multiple bends for extra complexity. The major issue with a large floor area is ensure there are sufficient silicone expansion joints and breaks in tiling. Failure to get this right can lead to tiles cracking and buckling due to movement in the foundation.

11.03.2022 The client approached me to tile a gyp-rock feature fireplace. They selected stacked stone for the aesthetics. I was concerned about the ability of the gyp-rock to act as a good substrate for the stone tiles so I used an appropriate primer and back-buttered the tiles to ensure good adhesion. The main challenges in a job like this are getting the corners to look right and making sure the layout works to avoid cutting tiles, as they fit together like a jigsaw.

21.02.2022 Client approached due to a moldy wall adjacent to their shower. After inspecting the area, I concluded that the the mold and water damage to the adjacent hallway wall and skirting was likely due to insufficient water-proofing in the shower. I removed the shower tiles and hob. I could see that the old waterproofing did not extend to the edge of the shower recess.... I rebuilt the hob, screeded, and applied two coats of waterproofing to the whole shower recess, before tiling, grouting, and siliconing. Ideally, I'd recommend retiling and waterproofing the whole bathroom wet area, however, budgets don't always allow for that. But an interim fix was required to avoid further water damage.
