24.01.2022 For the four Sundays of Advent we dedicated our usual ‘Water Aid’ loose change offering to the Christmas Bowl. On this, the third day of Christmas, it’s not too late to contribute to the important work of the Christmas Bowl. You can donate online through the special LNUC web page here: https://christmasbowl.actforpeace.org.au/48893

24.01.2022 This past week has been a difficult time for many people, especially those in Melbourne, and around Victoria, as the state government there has introduced some strong measures to attempt to control the dramatic increase in COVID-19 infections. In the light of this, we can all do with a little moment of peace. I came upon this video clip on a friend's Facebook feed the other day, and thought you might appreciate this little oasis of peace amidst the chaos of everything else that's happening in the world (and it also demonstrates the truth well known to choristers, that an empty stairwell provides the BEST acoustic for a cappella singing ) https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=201856987801693

23.01.2022 As we continue celebrating the risen Christ through the season of Easter, this video from last year deserves another run

22.01.2022 This happened just now. A great time of worship and discussion about what it looks like to be a Christian.

22.01.2022 The rules about intrastate travel, and worship gatherings were relaxed just in time for a ROADTRIP to Devonport to perform Presbytery duties for Brian Cole’s service of release.

21.01.2022 The first Sunday of May had been set aside as CWA Sunday, and before the pandemic, we had planned to be welcoming visitors from Country Women's Association branches in the north of Tasmania to Lilydale Uniting Church this morning for worship and a shared lunch. I was so excited about this, and had made all kinds of plans to have a special focus in worship on strong women of the Bible, as a tribute to these CWA members, and an encouragement to them to keep on doing what they d...Continue reading

20.01.2022 Hey Launceston North people, wouldn't it be great if a group of us all downloaded and read this book, and then had a discussion about it (either here, online, or on the phone). A great topic to be reading about in this season of Easter.

20.01.2022 I got a bit distracted what with needing to do my civic duty and all.. so am a little late in posting this for International Workers' Day (May Day).

20.01.2022 Whilst we are in the particular space that the covid lockdown has created, you might like to explore some potentially new and different ways of connecting with God. The Rev Dr Sally Douglas, minister of Richmond Uniting Church in Melbourne, has recorded a series of videos (with accompanying resources) on different prayer and spirituality practices. This video looks at the practice of silence; something that we are often not very comfortable with in the Uniting Church. Why not check it out? https://richmond.unitingchurch.org.au/2020/05/silence/

20.01.2022 Psalm 139 is my favourite psalm, and it was one of our Lectionary readings in worship this morning. This song is an adaptation of Psalm 139 and Beethoven's La Pathetique, by the prolific Leigh Newton. I stumbled across the clip this evening- too late for worship this morning, but I invite you to enjoy the beautiful musical meditation on the words of the psalm.

20.01.2022 As we prepare for gradually coming out of isolation, and recommencing some of our church activities, I think we all need to heed the advice of Nurse Cat, in making sure we remember to practise good hand hygiene. https://www.youtube.com/watch

19.01.2022 During the time of COVID-19, there has been much talk of kindness in adversity (as evidenced by the popularity of 'The Kindness Pandemic' Facebook Group- check it out). I think this brief video has something to say on that topic.

19.01.2022 With many congregations in Tasmania (and some other places) returning to face to face worship after a long period of COVID-19 distancing, we can take some helpful advice from the Bethany Baptist Church in Wales about worship in a post-lockdown world https://www.facebook.com/BethanyPwllgwaun/videos/2626752494309413

18.01.2022 A ‘Perks of Ministry’ moment from this day last year. Can’t help but love the people I minister with here in Lonnie.

17.01.2022 Every Sunday at our worship in Newnham, as part of our Acknowledgment of Place, we give thanks to God for placing us in the northern suburbs of Launceston; an area of need in many senses of the word. Today we pray for our community in the wake of a significant wave of gun violence in the area. (If you look at the list of incidents at the end of the article, note that Invermay, Mayfield and Rocherlea are all in our general area, adjoining suburbs to Newnham. )

17.01.2022 This is what I got up to today.

17.01.2022 Last night we had a church council meeting. I suspect a few present would relate to this.

16.01.2022 And now for a musical interlude- a great rendition of a traditional spiritual, from the Scotch Oakburn Virtual Community Choir (a collaboration of current and past students and staff).

15.01.2022 The latest offering from the Iona community- a new song by John Bell, which speaks very beautifully into our current experience as the 'ungathered' people of God in the time of COVID. I'm thinking I would like to include this in my worship resources for this Sunday.

15.01.2022 We join with members across the Uniting Church in Australia, and other church and community groups, to pray and act for an end to gender based violence.

14.01.2022 We live and worship on the land of the Letteremairrener people, a privilege for which I am grateful. This January 26, my prayer is that First Peoples and Second Peoples (ALL Second Peoples, not just those, like me, with white privilege) will be able to share their lives and truths in this country that we now call Australia; that there will be healing of past hurts and changes in the hearts of our government and people to prevent ongoing and future hurts.

14.01.2022 At LNUC we take very seriously our responsibility to be a safe church for children and vulnerable adults.

14.01.2022 Hello dear folks. You may have heard that changes to travel across state borders resulted in my planned visit to WA being cancelled. So my time away is now going to be spent entirely in Melbourne. I’m disappointed not to be able to see my cousin in Perth, but I’m having a good time in Melbourne. Can you tell?

12.01.2022 As Christmas fast approaches, we start thinking about the gifts that we will give to those we love... but it's also a good time to think about those people who aren't as fortunate as we are, who don't have loved ones to give them gifts, or to give gifts to, and for whom Christmas will be a very hard and lonely time. Donating to the Christmas Bowl is one way of sharing the Christmas love and goodwill beyond our immediate circle of family and friends.

11.01.2022 During this time of COVID-19, when we are not able to gather together for worship, some good things have come out of the situation. I have still been preparing weekly worship, but rather than delivering a service in person (or using video or livestreaming technology) I have sent worship and devotional material out to all folk from our congregations by email to those who have it, or by post to those who don't. I have received emails and letters, and had phone conversations wit...h people who have said how much they have appreciated receiving these materials each week. In some ways the changed circumstances have allowed people to 'do church differently'. Each week I send an old-fashioned, paper mailout to 18 people, which involves hand writing names and addresses on envelopes, printing and folding, sticking on stamps.... As I address each envelope, rather than groaning that I can't just stick on a printed address label, I say a little prayer for the person whose name and address I am writing. This is something I have appreciated, and give thanks for.

11.01.2022 We mourn with our community, the loss of this precious, young life.

10.01.2022 Looking for something to do this Saturday night? Why not come and worship with the folks at North Ryde Community UCA, as they explore the question of ‘What does Christian look like?’ I’ll be there, as part of a guest panel, to have a crack at answering this, and other similar, questions.

10.01.2022 Sometimes being a night owl has its advantages! The manse garden (and my whole street!) has been transformed into a winter wonderland! Thankyou God! What a blessing!

08.01.2022 This week is National Reconciliation Week. The Assembly has produced a resource to help us all walk alongside our indigenous brothers and sisters as first and second peoples. https://assembly.uca.org.au/nrw2020

06.01.2022 An important story, featuring some familiar faces.

03.01.2022 Mothers’ Day is a bit of a mixed bag, and can be quite difficult for some people (contrary to the warm, fuzzy advertisements we see on TV and other media in the lead up to today). To everyone who has feelings about today, I see you, and this is for you. https://www.instagram.com/p/BxUYs-Bh916/

02.01.2022 ... and a little closer to home, the Christmas message from our Moderator, Rev Denise Liersch.

01.01.2022 Getting my head into preparation of my 'worship at home' resources for Trinity Sunday. This week's gospel reading is the Great Commission from Matthew.... This is what Jesus said... right?

01.01.2022 Sometimes things come up that make a change of plans necessary. So there will be no Messy Church this Sunday :-(
