25.01.2022 Hot off the press! We’re excited to announce another paper that Dr Flavia has done in collaboration with the University of Sydney, just published in the journal... Nutrients! And it happens to be on our favourite topic, vitamin D, so you know it’s going to be good Flavia and her colleagues over at Sydney Uni found that within a group of people on a weight loss program, those low in vitamin D were losing less weight than those who were sufficient in the vitamin. What’s more, those who were supplemented with vitamin D had a greater loss in weight and waist circumference than those not supplemented. There are so many ways that this incredible vitamin may support our health, and we’re pretty pumped to see the research being applied by Doctors and Dietitians! Follow the link below to check it out! https://buff.ly/2vMOnpX
25.01.2022 Eggs are one of the most scrambled topics when it comes to nutrition And for that reason, we were excited to see Dr Nick Fuller recently present some new find...ings from his randomised controlled trial called the DIABEGG study, which investigated the effect of a high-egg diet on cardiovascular risk factors in people with type 2 diabetes. Dr Fuller found that having 12 eggs per week as part of a healthy diet didn’t result in any negative health effects in people with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, compared to a low egg diet (2 eggs or less per week). He says that eggs can safely be consumed as part of a healthy diet, even in those with type 2 diabetes and we reckon that’s egg-straordinary news for all our diabetic egg lovers out there! Check out the research here: https://buff.ly/2SffUri
23.01.2022 Owning a dog just might lengthen your life! Yep it really is true. A report pulling together research for the American Heart Association found that compared to ...non-dog owners, dog owners had a 24% reduced risk of dying from any cause, 31% reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease and a whooping 65% reduced risk of dying after suffering a heart attack! Why? It seems to be a combination of things like increased physical activity (that pooch needs walking after all) lower blood pressure (canine cuddles are great for reducing stress for both of you) and importantly less social isolation and greater interaction with other people (go to any dog park to see this). But - and it's a crucial but - only get a dog for yourself or a loved on if you or they can really look after it for the long haul. If you can then go for it - I can't imagine life without my pup * * * * * #dog #dogs #companiondog #canines #canine #socialisolation #longevity #goodhealth #healthandwellbeing #doggypals #hearthealth #hearthealthy #healthylifestyles #walkingthedog #cardiovascular #bloodpressure #heartattack See more
22.01.2022 NUTRITION FACTS Reading the label is not as helpful as we’ve been led to believe. We've all become a little fixated on food labels, looking at the amount of ...fat, carbs, sugar, salt & protein in what we eat But this is a pretty human-centric approach that largely ignores our gut microbes & fails to take into account the wonderful diversity of our food. In fact, a study has shown that looking at nutrition labels isn't enough to predict how it impacts our microbiota (that's our inner community of microbes including good bacteria). Instead, the food subgroup (veggies, dairy, fruits, grains etc) can tell us so much more about how a certain food influences our gut health, than its total carb or fat content. I talk much more about this in my book (bit.ly/drmeganrossibook - out in 4 DAYS!!) This goes to show it's not just about what foods we eat, but the food type & form too! Now nutrition is certainly not black & white, nor does it need to get any more complicated So as a general rule, opt for the whole, minimally processed options where possible. For example, wholegrain sourdough dipped in extra-virgin olive oil is a better option than deep-fried potato wedges dipped in ketchup even if it has the same fat and carb content. Whole oats have also been shown to have a 33% lower effect on blood sugar than instant ground oats. And how about a protein mars bar vs a fresh salmon fillet - both containing 20g of protein? Perfect example of a good-looking nutritional label but filled with I know which I'd choose! What do you guys think of nutrition labels - anything you'd want to see changed?

20.01.2022 I confess I resisted watching The Game Changers for some time - these shows usually drive me up the wall. But I have been asked so many times for my opinion abo...ut it I buckled down, watched it and have done my best to review for you. I am frequently told to keep online blog posts to about 800 words so I am breaking all the rules with this one. To try to keep everyone from rolling their weary eyes at me I have added a section up front with key bullet points. For those willing to read more, continue and you will find a deeper dive. Even at that I haven't been able to cover every scene, story and point made in the film but it will, I hope, give you the key takeaway points.

10.01.2022 WHY HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS NEED TO SUPPORT SCIENCE COMMUNICATION AND PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT People are using online forums, TV shows & the media to get their ad...vice on healthy eating far more than they use healthcare professionals (@mintelnews) Why? Because most people only seek qualified help when they're ill & even then, there's a limit to what can be shared in a 10 minute appointment (don’t get me started on the dietitian waiting lists). So with people turning to their social feeds @instagram for easily accessible health advice more than ever, I see social media as a powerful tool to engage with the public and share qualified, evidence-based advice in a truly accessible way That way, we can debunk dangerous fad messages and provide a trusted source of information from qualified experts for more people than we could ever reach in a clinic. Should there be strict regulation? Yes. Do we need to be selective when working with companies? Of course. Do we need to ensure we're continuing to share unbiased, objective, science-based advice and accurately represent the evidence? Absolutely. But if we discourage qualified healthcare professionals (who are bound by strong codes of ethics) from having a voice on social media, then it'll be those spreading unqualified, fad nutritional messages and touting dangerous detox products who will win And NOBODY wants that. Working with the food industry is key to making looking after our health easier and the fact that brands are increasingly seeking advice and support from qualified experts - both on and off social media - is a huge step in the right direction. It allows us to reshape their messages and ensure they're rooted in the science In cases where companies aren’t willing to change their products or messages, we turn them down. Sometimes we even make our own to bridge the gap between science and the food industry, to show them it IS possible to deliver on both taste and nutrition. So here's to empowering healthcare professionals to continue sharing accessible advice, combatting the misleading information and scaremongering that we all too often see on social platforms AND in the media!
06.01.2022 "There is a bit of a cooking oil myth going around that says that the smoke point of oil can help predict an oil’s ability to withstand heat and its suitability..., safety and healthfulness when heated for cooking purposes. This is just a myth! When cooking oil is exposed to heat, it will begin to break down. When this happens, there is a variety of degradation by-products produced, such as polar compounds. This is not a good thing as evidence suggests that polar compounds may be detrimental to health and have been linked to the development of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. This is why finding a stable oil to cook with, such as Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), is very important in helping to maintain health. #EVOOMyths #CookingOil #EVOO #SmokePoint #CookingwithEVOO" Photo credit @olive_wellness_institute Reposted with @plannthat See more
