13.01.2022 My plan for cultural heritage tourism is to utilise what we already have across the Fraser Coast in a coordinated approach. Right across the Fraser Coast, and i...n particularly in Maryborough, we have a range of fantastic museums which explore and document different strands of our history. This is a largely untapped side of our tourism offering, with huge potential. Cultural tourism is a growth sector and with so many potential visitors within an easy drive from South East Queensland, I believe that if packaged as a whole experience, the museums of Maryborough and beyond could be a significant tourist drawcard and economic boost for the city. Combined with the heritage streetscapes, there is something very special about our range of museums that fits a very unique and attainable tourism market. Other attractions that have proven popular include the night time cemetery history walks and rides on the Mary Ann steam locomotive. The Gallipoli to Armistice Memorial Walk in Queen’s Park has also demonstrated the level of interest in immersive historical experiences. Whether it is the magic of Mary Poppins, in-depth military history or our proud industrial heritage, Maryborough has a wide spectrum of immersive experiences on offer. There is a demand for genuine, authentic historic experiences it is a market we are ideally placed to tap into. In 2020 I will be working with all the museums to ensure that they are promoted well to bring more visitors to the region. There is a clear opportunity to promote them as a package. Individually they offer something unique and special: combined they are extraordinary. Our museums are run by an incredible group of committed, knowledgeable and public-spirited volunteers, who are great ambassadors for our community. Museums in Maryborough: Wide Bay Hospitals Museum Soc. Inc. Croydon Foundry Museum Brennan and Geraghty’s National Trust Museum Bond Store Maryborough Customs House Museum Maryborough Family History Society Maryborough Family Heritage Research Institute Maryborough Wide Bay & Burnett Historical Society Inc. Maryborough Military Aviation Museum The Story Bank Maryborough St Paul’s Bell Tower Museum St Mary’s Church Museum Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum Whistle Stop Museum Maryborough Train Station And beyond: Bauple Museum Brooweena Historical Village & Museum Burrum Mining Museum Brooklyn House Fraser Coast Discovery Sphere Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum
