25.01.2022 TIP TUESDAY . . Do you want to age as well & active as you possibly can? .... . It is a well known fact that with the natural aging process, comes a loss of muscle mass. Men lose around 30% in their lifetime!! With that in mind, here are some tips for combating the possible aching joints and pain & possible osteoporotic fractures that can occur when there isn't as much muscle mass to help our joints stay healthy and strong. 1. Start or even better, continue some regular strength exercise throughout your lifetime. This might be with a PT, at a gym or at home with a program from your allied health professional, but the main thing is making it a priority and a habit! 2. Ensure you keep up protein intake, make sure to get some advice from a specialist in the field of nutrition if you are unsure! 3.Every time you get up from a chair or off the couch, try and be mindful and activate those leg and hip muscles to make your muscles do the work, not your joints!

25.01.2022 TIP TUESDAY . . Have you heard the comments- "It is just wear & tear, look after it otherwise you will need surgery/joint replacements." Perhaps not the best language for us to use- It is creating an avoidance of knee use/motion for fear of us worsening it?... . . . Talking about knee osteoarthritis in particular, there are many factors YOU can influence which will enable you to continue living a life you want to live & perhaps not needing to go down a surgical path. 1. Chronic stress, lack of sleep & poor diets lead to actual physiological changes in the body by causing inflammatory responses. YOU can control these factors, please get in touch for some specific advice if you are unsure. 2. Lack of physical activity/social activity OR overactivity are both factors in the disability of the knee. The best thing to do is gradually load the knee, get it used to weight bearing correctly so you don't limp with a stiff leg to "protect" it from "getting more wear & tear." 3. Pain does not = damage. 4. You are not your X-Ray. Latest research says for a diagnosis of osteoarthritis of the knee, clinical assessment is best, taking in all factors such as function, pain location & disability. 5. Almost ALL cases of osteoarthritis of the knee should be treated with a conservative holistic approach before the surgical route.

21.01.2022 Spent a couple of hours yesterday with Jana and her team at Keep Active Osteopathy learning from Fiona from GV Women's Physiotherapy. It was a fantastic session to learn about all the different tips and tricks Fiona has developed over 20+ years of Women’s Health Physiotherapy. Everything from normal bowel and bladder motion, when there might be a problem to address, post natal return to exercise and prolapses were discussed, so very informative all round!... 12.01.2022 TIP TUESDAY . . Suffering from pain in your wrist? .... . 1. Pick up a tennis or golf ball and use it to release the muscles in your forearm which can contribute to wrist tightness & pain 2. Wrists need stretching too!! Gentle pull the wrist forwards, stretch it backwards (including the fingers) with both straight & bent elbows and clasp both hands together and do figure 8 circles to get that blood pumping! 3. Make sure your hands aren't in a strange position using your laptop or phones, and if so use a small hand towel to prop your forearms up for nice alignment & support

10.01.2022 TIP TUESDAY . . . .... Feeling out of control managing multiple things from home??? BREATHE Diaphragmatic breathing is the best advice I can give anyone for anything. Hands down! 1. Lay on your back, hands on your lower ribs/stomach region 2. Take a deep breath in through your nose using your stomach and watch as your hands should rise up & out with the inhale 3. Exhale through your nose all the way down to your pelvis as the stomach and ribs flatten back to normal 4. REPEAT x5 multiple times through the day to retrain your diaphragm *Extra reason why - this will decrease the use of your neck and chest muscles as they can sometimes be used when are aren't breathing correctly using the diaphragm, so you may even notice less neck pain and tension, as well as an increased level of calm

10.01.2022 To our dear Shepparton community, We understand that yesterday was an anxious and frustrating day, learning of the recent outbreak here as a result of something so far out of our control. We at RHO are so proud of the mass numbers stepping up & getting tested if they were in known high risk locations or close contacts of these people. We truly appreciate your honesty at this time, and hope that with this amazing country spirit and strong desire to keep our town protected that... we will be able to resume feeling safe again very soon. With this said, HONESTY will be much appreciated in terms of safety to others when choosing whether to attend your appointments with us at this time. If you have ANY doubt that you may be at risk of COVID19, been in a high risk location, a close contact of those persons, or be showing symptoms, please call to reschedule your appointment & get tested as soon as you can. Let's nip this in the bud, protect our community & businesses and support each other with kindness in this time of need. To keep updated with the list of locations at risk please visit https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/chadstone-kilmore-shepparton-ou Massive thanks to the team at Goulburn Valley Health for working so quickly to trace and set up testing locations, what a mammoth job in no time at all- choose kindness when dealing with these staff over the coming days

09.01.2022 TIP TUESDAY . . Do you suffer from a sore & tight jaw or have a click or pain with eating food or opening the mouth that just won't go away?... You might be suffering from dysfunction of the TMJ, commonly known as your jaw. 1. Visit your manual healthcare professional for some help in releasing tension in these regions both inside & outside the mouth using varying techniques 2. Have you dentist check for malignment or any mouth or tooth issues that might be contributing to your pain. You may need a splint or mouthguard to protect your teeth from grinding at night, or it may be something else they can assist you with 3. Actively practice letting your jaw fall naturally, rather than clenching it during the day 4. Practice mindfulness or meditation to relieve stress relating to jaw clenching 5. Eat on both sides of the mouth - sounds simple but see what you naturally do at dinner tonight 6. Use your own hands to release tension in the muscles we use to chew - pop 2 fingers in front of your ear on the TMJ which feels like a small ball, then move 1-2cm down to your masseter muscle or 1-2cm up to the top of your ear and release the temporalis muscle. Use gentle pressure to relieve some pressure yourself in these muscles

07.01.2022 TIP TUESDAY.. with a twist. (It's a long one!) REFLECT on how far you have come. 2020 has bought with it many challenges, but this week I've chosen to reflect on my own story of personal growth. November 2020 will mark 10 years since completing year 1 of a 5 year osteopathic degree learning to do exactly what I love - helping other human beings. It marks a huge milestone for me, as 2010 was one of the most difficult years of my life, with those close to me at the time only tr...uly understanding the toll it took. From that very teary, emotional, homesick and unknowingly anxious 1st year mess that I was to now - running my own osteopathic business and living a beautiful balanced life with amazing connections to my family & friends. Often those near me talk of that year & how tough they remember it was for me and until recently I've always looked back on it only focusing on the negatives - my insane level of fear, anxiety, homesickness & stress. Now....I look at it & feel proud. So proud of myself, pushing through the challenges I faced, sticking it out despite just wanting to move home & back to my "comfort zone." I stayed, threw the little energy I had into study & calisthenics(my other saviour) and made it through a year full of challenges to come out the otherside so much stronger. This photo depicts the culmination of 5 years of growth, supported by these 5 girls who sat & comforted me every Monday in the library upon returning to Melbourne to study(very homesick), & became my very dear lifelong friends. Without their support in 2010 I wouldn't have completed my osteopathic degree & be here today, a testament to the importance of quality relationships & connections in your life. So what can you reflect on this week? Perhaps a story of personal growth & sense of achievement, perhaps a hurdle you overcame. Whatever it is for you, positively reflect on it, be proud of yourself & know there will be more great moments in life to come. #osteopathy #wholebodyhealth #bodymindspirit #osteopathyaustralia#personalgrowth #growthmindset

06.01.2022 December and January are free parking in the Shepparton CBD, but just remember to keep to the time limits 2 months of no parking fees when you visit us Thanks @greatershepp

06.01.2022 TIP TUESDAY . . .Does this resemble you at home working/scrolling through your phone or computer?... Here are a quick few things to adjust to get rid of neck tension & improve posture! 1. Have the top 1/3 of your screen at the level of your eyes 2. Keep you chin & head in line with your spine, check that you aren't "craning" your neck forwards like a turtle! 3.If in an office chair, have both feet flat on the ground, with the knees 10 or so degrees lower than your hips -like a ball would roll off your knees

05.01.2022 Another local gem to shine a light on during isolation, Shepparton Brewery Friday nights have been the highlight of the week, waiting for their weekly round the world 3 course menu to come out and heading out to collect our bundle before racing home to devour it. Amazing service, great food and a bit of fun and excitement to get us through each week

05.01.2022 Rolling along with 2020 looking a little different to normal In accordance with Department of Health and Human Services requirements, eye protection (goggles or shields) is now to be worn by treating health practitioners as well as masks and gloves. So this is what will greet you for the time being, almost like something out of space aren’t I!... Please remember not to attend the clinic if you are unwell, been in contact with anyone with COVID 19 or awaiting test results, or in a period of isolation. Special thanks for Nic at Fit and Folly for the ultra cool shield #osteopathyaustralia #osteopathy #osteopath #covid19

05.01.2022 No mask... no entry From Monday, RHO follows the new guidelines for regional Victorian residents to wear masks outside the home. We are all in this together #osteopath #getridofcovid19 #dotherightthing #osteopathyaustralia

03.01.2022 TIP TUESDAY . . . Do you get enough daily sunshine in winter?... Perhaps not in this form at the moment, but sunshine is such an important & FREE source of Vitamin D for our bone strength to prevent osteoporosis - weakening of bones. We need this to allow calcium to be absorbed from our food. 1. Get sun exposure on your bare skin for 10 minutes once to twice daily between 11am-3pm over the May-September months 2. We only get a small amount of Vitamin D from food, so you must make sure to get outside to get the amount we need 3. Consider talking to a trained health professional about whether you need some extra Vitamin D supplementation especially if you are someone who spends majority of time inside

02.01.2022 Christmas shopping got you stumped?! Give the gift of health & wellness Foam rollers, spiky balls, adjustable pillows, magnesium supplementation for all those active or aspiring athletes in your lives ... #foamrollers #osteopathyaustralia #osteopathy #selfrelease @bioceuticals @therapeuticpillow

02.01.2022 TIP TUESDAY . . . Suffering from a sore neck or headache at the moment?... Here are some quick things you can do to help it - . . . . 1. "Motion is lotion" - every hour or so, or if you can't manage that then every day in the shower gently rotate your neck to look over your shoulder both directions, tilt your ear to shoulder both directions and look up & down a couple of times 2. Is your jaw clenched right now? If so, relax the jaw, rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth to help stop the clenching of your teeth. The jaw is highly related to upper neck pain..stay tuned for more on that topic another week. 3. Do you jut your chin forward when looking at screens, driving or reading? If so, try to be more mindful of keeping your head in line with your spine, not hanging forward like a turtle! We do this when we are concentrating or deep in thought!

02.01.2022 TIP TUESDAY Do those long walks over isolation have you feeling some soreness in your feet and calves? . . .... . . 1. Grab a small ball like a golf ball/spiky ball to roll and release the plantar fascia (arch of your foot) 2. Ensure you stretch each calf for 30-45 seconds after your walk 3. Visit an osteopath and/or podiatrist if pain & tightness is persisting for a specialised plan to keep you moving. See more

01.01.2022 Ostelina climbed the tree looking at all the donations for the Shepparton SalvoCare Christmas toy collection. I think she might want to help hand the toys out to those less fortunate this year! A great reminder to get your donations in this week

01.01.2022 TIP TUESDAY Are you pregnant and suddenly experiencing shortness of breath, indigestion or reflux? . . .... . 1. Download any breathing app or try doing some box breathing, deeply inhaling for 4, holding in for 4, out for 4 and holding out for 4 and repeat. 2.Stretch the middle of your back gently over a swiss exercise ball or foam roller or yoga bolster 3. Ensure you are moving daily, especially rotating and sidebending both directions to keep your spine happy & healthy OR Try visiting your local osteopath or womens health specialist for assistance in releasing those regions that bub might be wreaking a bit of havoc!

01.01.2022 Today’s activities - first aid refresher to keep everyone around me safe Rest assured all osteopaths must have up to date first aid for our registration and insurance, we’ve got this!
