25.01.2022 Recently I had a client come in with what was described as hot burning pain on the side of the hip. Being very active and fit his whole life this discomfit was somewhat unfamiliar. After an examination and consultation we decided on a Myotherapy treatment plan to get him out of pain. The gluteal muscles also known as the buttocks are a group of 3 muscles; gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimums. They assist in the stabilisation of the femur in the hip socket,... generate power when lifting our legs and keep our pelvis in the correct position when walking just to name a few. When walking both sides of the gluteal muscles need to be working effectively, one side to generate power as you lift the leg up and forward, the other to keep the opposite side of the pelvis strong and stable. If this system isnt working efficiently when taking that step, the side which should be holding straight and upright can swing too far laterally loading the structures on the outside of the hip. For this client, this was exactly what was happening. As he was lunging forward during lawn bowls he didnt have the stability around the gluteal muscles he needed and was translating his weight too far across. This repetition over time, had caused this pain to become a problem. Once diagnosed, we were able to start treatment of soft tissue; stretching and trigger point therapy to work on the muscles which were being overloaded as this would reduce the stress around the structures and help reduce the pain. Another important step was the introduction of a home exercise plan. This involved continuing Myotherapy treatment, in conjunction with specific self- release work and exercises to do at home to encourage improved activation of the gluts and hips. We also addressed some lifestyle factors such as sleeping position, stretching before and after activity and work station set up. Education is such a huge part of your treatment, to help you understand WHAT is happening, WHY it has occurred and HOW we as team are going to implement a treatment plan that will be successful. #revivemam #massage #myotherapy #healthandfitness #selfcare #hippain

24.01.2022 Are your knees going the distance What is Runners Knee? Runners Knee or ITB friction syndrome is an overuse injury to some of the soft tissue structures on the outside of the knee. It is characterized by sharp pain, usually when running.... The ITB is a large band of connective tissue that runs from the hip down the outside of the thigh and attaches to the tibia and femoral condyle just below the knee joint. ITB friction syndrome is caused by the repetitive rubbing of the ITB against the bone on the outer side of the knee. Muscle tightness of Hip Flexors and Gluteal muscles increases the tautness of the ITB and this equates to increased tension at the insertion into the knee. What could I be doing wrong and how to avoid it? - Wearing incorrect footwear - we recommend getting a foot assessment before purchasing any footwear - Increasing training load too quickly - distances should be increased in a slow progression, no more then 10% per week to allow the body to get used to the increased amount. - No rest days - Have a rest day! The body does require time to recover. - Not warming up - The body needs an adequate warm up before launching into full stride. - Inadequate strength - It is crucial to strengthen the core, gluteal and hip muscles to avoid a sole reliance on the knee muscles. What can we do to help? - A Running Assessment - to identify any weakness in your stride. E.g. shortening your stride length to avoid extra force through the joints. - Muscular treatment - soft tissue therapies and dry needling for any areas that are struggling to release. - A Home Treatment Program - specifically targeting the release and lengthening of the hip, gluteal and knee muscles. Utilizing spikey balls, foam rollers and stretching. By using the above advice we will be able to manage and help prevent further cases of runners knee. #revivemam #massage #myotherapy #runnersknee #healthandfitness

24.01.2022 At the end of the day to unwind and get rid of tension in your body. Complete some simple stretches to areas you feel are tight. focus on muscles that feel sore ease into the stretch, do not over stretch or force muscles into a position of pain hold the stretch for 20-30 seconds... BREATHE!! Oxygen helps the muscles release and repair stretch both sides, as the opposite side is likely to be compensating for the weakness of the sore side Then enjoy a happy more mobile body! #revivemam #massage #myotherapy #stretch #healthandwellness #fitnessmotivation #tipsandtricks #yoga #pilates

22.01.2022 Walking in heels all day can shorten your calf muscles over time, so give them some release with a good rubdown. Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor and then clench your ankle with your thumb placed just over the Achilles tendon. Moving an inch at a time, work your way up your calf, adding pressure and releasing until you reach your knee. Repeat on the other leg. #revivemam #massage #myotherapy #selfcare #lookafteryourself #healthandfitness

21.01.2022 Most adults will experience low back pain at some time in their lives. Low back pain (lumbar pain) can be caused by a problem in the muscles, ligaments, discs, joints or nerves of the spine. Some back pain is due to serious problems, but most back problems are mechanical in nature and can be prevented by looking after your back and keeping it in good shape. The symptoms of low back pain may include: * Dull ache or stiffness in the lower back... * Tingling or numbness of the leg(s) * pain in a buttock and hips * Muscle spasms or seizing up of the back muscles and Sharp pain * Difficulty walking or standing up straight What can I do to relieve my back pain? You can often manage your pain and return to normal activities as soon as youre ready. * Keep moving. Its natural to want to avoid using your back when it hurts. However, for most types of back pain, inactivity especially bed rest has been shown to do more harm than good. Bed rest can slow the healing process and make your muscles weaker, tighter, and more painful. Although you do want to avoid activities that make your pain worse, stay as active as possible. * Find a comfortable position. When you do rest, you may have to experiment with positions to relieve your pain. One position that works well for many people with back pain is to lie on your back with your hips and knees bent, with pillows under your knees. Lying on your side with your knees bent and a pillow between them may also help. * Try heat or ice. Ice can lessen your pain, while heat can loosen tight muscles. Apply ice or heat for 15 minutes at a time each hour. Some people find that alternating heat and ice treatments works best. For icing, try an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas. For heating, try a hot water bottle or a heating pad or take a warm bath. A barrier, such as a towel, should be placed between the cold pack and the skins surface to prevent skin and nerve damage. * Visit your allied health professional. A treatment from your myotherapist chiropractor, physiotherapist or osteopath will help to relieve symptoms and settle down your condition.

20.01.2022 Music in its own right is a very effective form of therapy. When music is combined with massage it can create a relaxing atmosphere, block out or start conversation and reduce outside noise. For many, music is a way to personalise a massage session and increase satisfaction. I have fielded a lot of requests for different types of massage music over the years. I have been asked to play classical, ocean sounds, Enya, anything but Enya rain forests and meditation. Here are... a few of my favourite massage music tracks: Echos of nature - Ocean waves And winter came - Enya Healing garden series Piano music for massage Music romantics I personally enjoy relaxation music and the benefits of working in a calm and peaceful environment. But if you are not enjoying the music in your treatment dont be afraid to ask for something different. 19.01.2022 Dry needling uses a very fine, solid filament needle to cause a small, precise injury or lesion in the tissue when it enters the body. The tiny needle induces injury signals the brain uses to initiate a sequence of events to replace or repair the damaged tissue with new, healthy tissue. Needling in a painful trigger point or muscular knot often provokes a twitch response from the muscle. This is both diagnostic and therapeutic as healthy muscle tissue will not twitch... when stimulated by a needle. Once a twitch response has been elicited, the muscle fibers in that area relax, inflammation is reduced and circulation improves. As a result of these physiologic processes, dry needling can purposely address muscle, tendon and myofascial pain and dysfunction. #revivemam #myotherapy #dryneedling #howdoesitwork #massage

14.01.2022 Ask yourself these questions and get rid of your items based on your answers. When we say dispose of your clutter, we mean either sell it, donate it, recycle it, give it away to friends and family or throw it away. Do what is easiest for you, the sooner you get rid of clutter the better. 1. Have I used this in the last year? If your answer is no, its time to toss. 2. If I were shopping right now, would I buy this? If the current you wouldnt buy this item now, why would you... even keep it? 3. Is the only thing thats keeping me from disposing this item that I dont want to waste money? Think of it this way: you wasted money when you bought an item you dont use. 4. Am I holding on to this for sentimental value? Be strict and keep only a few of the items in a small memorabilia box. Then take a photo of items you are throwing away so you can keep them forever. 5. Do I have a similar item that serves the same purpose? If yes, then get rid of one of them. 6. Do I have a realistic plan to use this? Remember, dont lie to yourself about how perfect an item would be. Make sure you have a concrete plan to use the item, and if you dont use it within the time frame you set for yourself to use it, toss it. 7. Does it fit me or my living space? You may love it, but do you have space for the item or does it even suit you now? Think hard on what to keep your space is sacred. 8. Am I holding on to the broken item to fix in the future? Fix it now, or if you dont get around to fixing in the next two weeks, then toss. Stop making excuses and clean up the clutter in your home! Itll make you feel better and make your living space look better as well! #declutter #freshstart #healthandwellness #springcleaning #mondaymotivation #massage #myotherapy #revivemam #selfcare

11.01.2022 Back at work and feeling tension in your neck. Every hour, give your body some relief from hunching over your computer. Clasp your hands together behind your neck, and apply pressure to each side of your spinal cord with the bottom of your palms. Rub up and down slowly. Then press into the trapezius muscle along the left side of your neck just under the base of your skull using the fingers on your right hand. Tilt your head to the left, then rub in downward mo...tions, working your way to your shoulder. Repeat three times, then switch sides. The front of your neck can also get tight while you work, so finish by stretching it out. Lay your head back to allow the top of your chair to press into your neck, just below the skull, and hold it there for 20 seconds. This will encourage blood flow, reduced stiffness and fatigue in the area. #revivemam #massage #myotherapy #selfmassage #takefive #workroutine

11.01.2022 Foam rolling has transformed from a once mysterious technique used only by professional athletes, coaches, and therapists to a familiar everyday practice for people at all levels of health and fitness. The self-massage technique of foam rolling is used to release muscle tightness and trigger points. By applying pressure to specific points on your body you are able to aid in the recovery of muscles and assist in returning them to normal function. Meaning your muscles are elas...tic, healthy, and ready to perform at a moments notice. Foam rolling is a very popular warm up technique and there are studies showing it leads to short term increases in range of motion that are not accompanied by strength loss. This is interesting because stretching interventions tend to show increased range of motion that are associated with a loss of muscle strength and power. This means you can perform foam rolling in your warm up without any detrimental effects to your work out. You may be sore the next day. It should feel as if your muscles have been worked and released, however you should not push yourself to the point of excessive soreness. Drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, and eat clean. This will help to flush your system and fuel your muscles more effectively. Give it 24-48 hours before focusing on the same area again. #revivemam #massage #myotherapy #foamroller #healthandfitness #wellness #selfcare #soremuscles

08.01.2022 A warm up and cool down doesnt have to be long but they do have to exist. Whether your a high level athlete or just the casual runner. Done correctly, warming up and cooling down can reduce the risk of injury and improve your overall athletic performance. Warming up helps to prepare your body for any aerobic exercise. A warm up generally consists of doing the activity you are about to do but at a less intense impact and pace. This slowly increasing heart rate, blood flow and... oxygen to the muscles. Warming up increases your range of motion in preparation for activity. How to warm up correctly A good warm up consists of at least 5 minutes of cardio and then 2-5 minutes of light stretching and strengthening. Cardio of any form is good but it is best to do a similar form of exercise to what you will be doing. For example a runner should start with a slow to brisk walk before starting their run followed by stretching the lower body (legs, Glutes, lower back) and arms. The more intense the exercise the longer the warm up should be. A cool down is just as important as a warm up but often skipped or seen as unnecessary. After exercise your heart is still beating at a faster then usual rate, your body temperature is raised and blood vessels dilated. Stopping to fast could mean sickness or feeling as though you will pass out. How to cool down correctly Cooling down is similar to a warm up in you do the same activity at a less intense rate. For example a runner should walk for 2-3 minutes or until heart rate is at 120bpm. By doing this you are slowly bringing the heart rate back to resting and allowing time for muscles to recover after intense exercise. It is a good time to stretch out your muscles to improve flexibility as they are all still warm. #revivemam #massage #myotherapy #healthandfitness #wellbeing #running #selfcare #soremuscles

08.01.2022 Is there any better feeling than that post-massage calm? Believe it or not, the benefits of regular massage are about more than just those feel-good moments. Each session is a building block, training your body to maintain its relaxed state and teaching your muscles to remain loose even during high-stress periods. Massage can have longer lasting benefits than the instant relaxation you feel. But this sense of relaxation is only the start, lets run through 4 key benefits of ...regular massage therapy. 1. Pain Relief Committing to regular massage is a great tool for pain management. Your therapist can focus on specific problem areas, as well as treat stiff, sore muscles by increasing circulation. This helping to alleviate pain due to injuries, arthritis and a range of other conditions. 2. Immune System Support Its a well-known fact that people with high levels of stress are more likely to get sick more often. This stress often leads to a myriad of other negative side effects such as lack of sleep, a bad diet and a weakened immune system. Regular massage sessions help alleviate stress and as a result have been proven to naturally increase the immune systems cytotoxic capacity - aka its ability to fight off bacteria and infection. 3. Injury Resilience Rehabilitating any injury can be a tiring and frustrating process. Massage plays an important role as a supplement to standard injury rehabilitation procedures such as strengthening and stretching. By encouraging circulatory movement and relaxing muscles, it helps the body pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs. This allows the rehabilitating injured area(s) to become more flexible and heal at an accelerated rate. 4. Improved Posture Everyone has caught themselves slouching over their desk or slumping in a chair at some point. This poor posture can cause a lot of tension in our bodies. Proper body alignment can help improve things like digestion and even breathing capacity. The good news is bad posture can be corrected with regular massage. Massage will loosen the muscles and alleviate pain enabling your body to reposition itself into a natural pain free posture.

07.01.2022 Have you ever thought about body language in relation to yourself and how your own body language can change how you feel, think and act? There have been studies to suggest that our body language can dramatically change our hormone levels within a short period of time. This can change our confidence, stress and potentially even our response to pain. People who display higher levels of power are often more confident, assertive and optimistic with an increased ability to think a...bstractly. A study with that looked at the effects of body language on our hormones found that if someone adapts a power pose for as little as two minutes people had around 20% increase in their testosterone levels and a 25% decrease in their cortisol levels! What is a power pose? Its a body posture that is open and expansive, compared to postures that make us smaller and taking up less space, such as hunching, crossing your arms, legs or ankles. So, when were thinking of power poses, think of standing with your feet apart, hands on hips and your head held high and chest out. Now lets take a look at the hormones that can be affected with a change of posture and what type of effects they can have on our bodies and minds. Testosterone, known as the dominance hormones is most commonly associated as the male hormone, however this is a very important hormone in women as well. Testosterone can increase your confidence, regulate fat metabolism and helps with the maintenance of bone, muscle strength and increases libido. Cortisol is known as the stress hormone. While it is important to have regular levels of this hormone as it is part of our flight and fight response, can increase glucose metabolism, contribute to the control of blood pressure and reduce inflammation. Cortisol can also become chronically high causing fatigue of the adrenal gland as well as heightened sensitivity to the central nervous system. There are also studies being done looking at the relationship between high levels of cortisol, anxiety and depression. So, what can we all do to help regulate these hormones and improve ourselves? Try a power pose for two minutes and fake it until you make it!
